W. Averell Harriman brought to <strong>the</strong> new firm his vice<br />

president, Prescott Sheldon Bush, who had been with<br />

him since 1926. Bush became chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong><br />

Pennsylvania Water & Power Co., director U.S. Rubber,<br />

PanAm, CBS, Dresser Mfg Co., Vanadium, U.S.<br />

Guaranty, Prudential Insurance and partner Brown Bros<br />

Harriman. He was chmn National War Fund 1943-44 and<br />

chmn USO. His son George [H.W.] Bush is now vice<br />

president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> U.S.<br />

George Herbert Walker, grandfa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> George H.W.<br />

Bush, who was named after him, became president <strong>of</strong><br />

W.A. Harriman Co. in 1928 (now Brown Bros. Harriman).<br />

He was director <strong>of</strong> Belgian-American Coke Ovens Corp.,<br />

chmn Habershaw Cable Corp., chmn International Great<br />

Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Railway, director Certain Teed Products,<br />

American Shipping & Commerce Corp., American<br />

International Corporation, Cuba Railway Co.,<br />

Pennsylvania Coal & Coke. He was <strong>the</strong> donor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Walker Cup, <strong>the</strong> prestigious golf trophy, and president <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> U.S. Golf Association. In 1925, he financed <strong>the</strong><br />

building <strong>of</strong> Madison Square Garden. His son, George H.<br />

Walker Jr. became chmn Walker-Bush Oil Corp., and<br />

Zapata Petroleum (George Bush's firm), Silesian<br />

Holdings, with W.A. Harriman City Investing Corp.,<br />

Westmoreland Coal. Co. and West Indies Sugar Co. He<br />

is a trustee <strong>of</strong> Yale. George H. Walker III merged <strong>the</strong> firm<br />

<strong>of</strong> G.H. Walker Co. with Laird & Co. and White & Weld in<br />

1974. He is now a senior vice pres. <strong>of</strong> White & Weld.
