writes in "Financial Giants <strong>of</strong> America":<br />

"He (Harriman) early won <strong>the</strong> confidence <strong>of</strong> Kuhn, Loeb Co. and established<br />

relations which later became most advantageous to both."<br />

Kuhn, Loeb financed <strong>the</strong> Union Pacific takeover by<br />

Harriman. H.J. Eckenrode notes in "E.H. Harriman":<br />

"In his takeover <strong>of</strong> UP, Harriman had behind him tremendous financial force -<br />

- not only Kuhn, Loeb Co. with funds from Frankfurt and Berlin, but <strong>the</strong><br />

National City Bank, '<strong>the</strong> greatest source <strong>of</strong> cash in <strong>the</strong> country'."<br />

Harriman employed judge Robert Scott Lovett as general<br />

counsel for Union Pacific. When Harriman and Otto Kahn<br />

were summoned by <strong>the</strong> ICC in 1897, Lovett advised<br />

<strong>the</strong>m to refuse to answer all questions about <strong>the</strong>ir stock<br />

operations. In 1908, <strong>the</strong> Supreme Court upheld <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

refusal to talk. The records <strong>of</strong> this case, SC No. 133 US<br />

v. UP RR, later disappeared from <strong>the</strong> Library <strong>of</strong><br />

Congress. In 1911, <strong>the</strong> Equitable Life Insurance building,<br />

which contained all <strong>the</strong> records <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Union Pacific RR,<br />

burned, destroying all UP papers to that date.<br />

Lovett's son, Robert Abercrombie Lovett married Adele<br />

Brown, daughter <strong>of</strong> a partner <strong>of</strong> Brown Bros. and<br />

became a partner in 1926. He was Special Asst. Sec. <strong>of</strong><br />

War 1940-45, Under Secretary <strong>of</strong> State, 1947-49, Dep.<br />

Secretary <strong>of</strong> Defense 1950-51, Secretary <strong>of</strong> Defense<br />

1951-53. It was Lovett who took <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>n Secretary <strong>of</strong><br />

Defense James Forrestal, <strong>of</strong> Dillon Read Co. to Fishers<br />

Island to persuade him to change his stand against U.S.<br />

Middle Eastern policies. Forrestal refused, and was
