in 1936, she was treated like visiting royalty.<br />

In 1922, <strong>the</strong> Chase National Bank had established <strong>the</strong><br />

American-Russian Chamber <strong>of</strong> Commerce to promote<br />

trade with and government recognition <strong>of</strong> Russia. Its<br />

chairman was Reeve Schley, a vice president <strong>of</strong> Chase;<br />

he was a director <strong>of</strong> many corporations including Howe<br />

Sound, Electric Boat, <strong>the</strong> Yale Corp., chairman <strong>of</strong><br />

Sundstrand and Underwnod; he had served as director<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> U.S. Fuel Administration from 1917-1919. His son,<br />

Reeve Schley Jr. was a Captain in <strong>the</strong> O.S.S. under<br />

Gen. Donovan in World War II.<br />

BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER W ORLD W AR II<br />

Both Chase and Equitable Trust led in granting credits to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Soviet Union during <strong>the</strong> 1920s. In 1934, Roosevelt<br />

established <strong>the</strong> Export Import Bank to finance increased<br />

trade with <strong>the</strong> Soviet Union. During World War II, Chase<br />

was AMTORG'S principal bank in handling <strong>the</strong> many<br />

billions <strong>of</strong> dollars <strong>of</strong> Lend Lease transactions for Russia.<br />

Roosevelt went all out in supporting <strong>the</strong> Soviets, perhaps<br />

because all three <strong>of</strong> his personal assistants, Alger Hiss,<br />

Lauchlin Currie and Harry Dexter White, were identified<br />

as Soviet agents. Hiss' mentor was Dean Acheson,<br />

formerly <strong>of</strong> J.P. Morgan Co.. Asst Secretary <strong>of</strong> State A.A.<br />

Berle Jr. testified before <strong>the</strong> House Un-American<br />

Activities Committee Aug. 30, 1948 that "Acheson was<br />

<strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pro-Russian group in <strong>the</strong> State<br />

Department." Acheson later became senior partner <strong>of</strong>
