NavAid Controller AIS
Redundant AIS System
• Redundant Automatic Identification System (AIS) Type 3 (transmit/ receive)
• Position reporting of beacons and obstacles to navigation (message 21)
• Compliant with IEC62320-2, ITU.RM.1371-3, IALA A-126
• AIS Transponder approved by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency
(BSH/46162/4322015/11)
The Sabik NavAid Controller AIS (Automatic Identification System) is used to ensure the safety of navigation. It
serves for identification of navigational aids. To this purpose a redundant AIS system is used. The two devices
of type AIS SIB T3 support two channels (A, B, A+B in parallel mode or A+B alternating) and up to 10 virtual
stations. Slot synchronization is realized via the integrated GPS receiver.
The devices can be configured (reporting interval, mode of operation, …) via a terminal menu (PC), via an IEC
61162 compliant interface or via VDL (VHF Data Link).
Mode of operation
The AIS transponders periodically broadcast various messages comprising important information. Message 21
is primarily addressed to ships which are ready to receive and provides information concerning type,
geographical position and status of the aid to navigation. Pursuant to IALA Recommendation A-126, virtual
AtoNs are also supported.
If necessary, AIS data may be transferred via Ethernet from the installation site to the Vessel Traffic Service
(VTS).
Error detection
Error detection is made possible by redundancy: Both of the AIS transponders in the control cabinet are
configured for a 6-minute reporting interval, with a time offset of 3 minutes between the intervals of the two
devices. For standard operation this staggering will result in an actual message interval of 3 minutes. If one of
the transponders fails, the reporting interval increases to 6 minutes, and this doubling of the reporting interval
enables the base station to detect the malfunction.
The LightGuard Gateway communicates via TCP/IP with the control system, receives control commands and
provides status information for the individual components.
