VRL-74 LED RANGE LIGHT
The VRL-74 has a single LED operating
through a high power optical grade
acrylic lens having a 3° divergence
on the horizontal and vertical plane.
Divergence is defi ned as the angle
where the intensity is at 50% of the
centre intensity of the lens. Profi le of
the VRL-74 lens shows a wide angle of
centre intensity and a sharp cut of at
higher angles.
High intensity makes the VRL-74 lens
suitable for use as a lead or range light.
The sharp cut off at the higher angles
allows the lens to be used for high
range sector light applications with the
angle of uncertainty between colours of
approximately 0.5°.
The versatility of the VRL-74 lens
has provided three distinct product
groupings:
1. The Mini Array is the standard
product offering of the VRL-74
and consists of mounted lenses
on a vertical plane. The product
is available from 1 to 6 lenses
depending on the requirement for
intensity and divergence. The Mini
Array application is intended for
range or lead lights.
2. The Mini Solo product consists
of single VRL-74 lenses that
are arranged to meet a specific
application requirement. As such
the product is customised to the
application. The Mini Solo product
is used where wider divergence is
required compared to the Mini Array
including high range multicolour
sector lights. The Mini Solo is also
used to configure signals such as
arrows or crosses to indicate safe
navigation channels.
3. The Mini Tile product is a larger form
of the Mini Array and contains a
higher number of VRL-74 lenses. This
is provided where higher intensity
range or lead lights are required. The
Mini Tile layout is customised to each
application.
The maximum intensity and current at
12VDC for a fi xed character using the
standard VRL-74 3° lens is as follows:
Colour
Max Intensity
Candela x1000
Current mA
White 80 450
Red 22.1 115
Green 37.5 390
Yellow 8.5 65
Blue 13.6 345
Spreader Lenses can be fi tted over the
VRL-74 Lens to increase either or both the
vertical and horizontal divergence. The
spreader lenses are available in standard
formats, however with the fl exibility of 3
dimensional machining custom spreaders
can be made for any application.
When a spreader lens is fi tted, the multiplier
of the spreader reduces the intensity of the
assembly. The intensity with a spreader lens
fi tted is the intensity of the base VRL-74
lens divided by the multiplier.
Spreader lenses can be rotated by 90° to
provide greater fl exibility of horizontal and
vertical divergence.
INFORMATION REQUIRED
Vega has a questionnaire available to
assist with the collection of the necessary
information to defi ne the requirements
of a Range Light or other form of VRL-74
application. A copy of this can be obtained
by contacting sales@vega.co.nz
The required information includes
1. Range required for both day and night
2. Flash character and colour
3. Horizontal and vertical divergence required
4. Details of the application including
channel length and width
5. Details of size of vessels using the light
VRL-74 MINI ARRAY
The Mini Array is available in 6 formats from
1 to 6 lenses.
Spreader lenses can be added to increase
the vertical and horizontal divergence of the
light. It is possible to use different spreader
lenses in order to provide the best outcome
for an application such as fi lling in the
intensity at the near end of a channel. This
an area that may not be illuminated using
normal range lights due to the narrowing of
the beam closer to the light.
The maximum intensity without spreader
lenses fi tted is as follows.
Where spreaders are fitted the intensity
will be reduced by the spreader multiplier.
Note that spreader lenses are different
for each colour and cannot be swapped
between colours.
Operation of the Mini Array
The Mini Array is programmed as a
single unit and can operate day only, day
and night, or night only. Day and night
intensity is separately programmable.
The minimum night intensity is
approximately 3% of the maximum
intensity of the VRL-74 Mini Array
assembly. The controller for the lights is
part of the integrated assembly.
The VRL-74 Mini Array contains the
programmable features that are normally
found in Vega Beacons.
Mounting of the Mini Array
Horizontal mounting is the standard
option however vertical mounting is
available if advised at time of order.
The Mini Array is adjustable in both the
horizontal and vertical planes for fi nal
alignment to the navigation channel.
Alignment tools are available as an option
should precise alignment be required.
These consist of either a gun sight or
a telescopic sight mount (Vega does
not supply the telescopic sight). These
alignment tools are detachable and one can
be used to align many Mini Array units.
Additional Options
• Internal GPS for pulse synchronisation
with other lights
• Alarm/Monitor Output
