<strong>Introduction</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Lithography</strong><br />

This class will provide basic knowledge about preparing, drawing and printing a lithograph<br />

from limes<strong>to</strong>ne. Students will print a small edition of the completed drawing from a s<strong>to</strong>ne<br />

within the Fleisher collection. Previous experience in drawing and an interest in working with<br />

others is helpful. Students who are Fleisher members are permitted <strong>to</strong> utilize the studio<br />

outside of class time for an additional hourly rate.<br />

What will you learn in this class?<br />

• How <strong>to</strong> prepare a limes<strong>to</strong>ne for drawing<br />

• How <strong>to</strong> draw on limes<strong>to</strong>ne using crayon and/or transfer methods<br />

• How <strong>to</strong> print from limes<strong>to</strong>ne<br />

• How <strong>to</strong> assist another who is printing<br />

• Understanding of the basic concepts of how lithography works from limes<strong>to</strong>ne<br />

Materials List<br />

Lithographic crayons & pencils vary in grease content, the lower the number, the<br />

higher the grease content or the darker the mark making.<br />

It is advisable that you purchase through the Fleisher s<strong>to</strong>re, the S<strong>to</strong>nes Crayon<br />

Package, which includes: 1 each 1/4 inch crayon in numbers 1, 3, and 5 with a<br />

holder, deletion hone, sharpener and rubbing crayon. Those crayons noted with an *<br />

are included in kit.<br />

Otherwise you can buy supplies individually:<br />

• Korn’s lithographic pencils (numbers available: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)<br />

• Korn’s lithographic crayons (numbers available: 00, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)<br />

• S<strong>to</strong>ne’s lithographic ¼ inch crayons (waterproof, numbers available 1*, 2,<br />

3*, 4, 5*, 6, 7)<br />

• S<strong>to</strong>ne’s lithographic tablet crayons (waterproof 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)<br />

• S<strong>to</strong>ne’s rubbing crayons (waterproof Hard, Medium*, Soft)<br />

• Rubber hone or snake slip* (for erasing and cleaning margins)<br />

• Printing paper (Rives BFK, Arches Cover, German Etch, Somerset, etc.)<br />

• Newsprint pad or individual sheets (size depends on image printed)<br />

• Bamboo & hake brushes (for etching/processing)


• Two (2) lithographer’s cellulose sponges (one for processing, must have a<br />

clean one for printing)<br />

NOTE: A Ziploc® bag with a few air holes punctured in it is convenient for the s<strong>to</strong>rage<br />

and transportation of lithographic sponges<br />

• Watercolor and bristle brushes (a variety for drawing, painting on s<strong>to</strong>ne)<br />

• Hard pencil (in the H range)<br />

• Exact-o® knife and blades<br />

• Single edge razor blades (5)<br />

• Sketchbook<br />

• Gloves (kitchen or surgical)<br />

Optional:<br />

• Tracing paper<br />

• Etching needle<br />

• Etching scraper<br />

• Newsprint pad (great for transportation of prints and proofing)<br />

• Ink pen and nibs<br />

Materials offered in shop:<br />

• Korn’s lithographic tusche<br />

• Distilled water<br />

• Cheesecloth<br />

• Fine steel wool (#0000)<br />

• Oil of wintergreen<br />

• Zippo® lighter fluid<br />

• Apron or smock<br />

Many materials are available for purchase in Fleisher’s supply s<strong>to</strong>re. Students<br />

presenting a valid Fleisher membership card receive a 10% discount on their<br />

purchases.
