A MOVABLE FEAST
Welcome to Dorset. This is an invitation to explore art, design
and making in a rural context. This is your chance to interweave
the experiences on offer with other aspects of Dorset’s cultural and
geographical landscape. It is also for local people to strengthen their
enjoyment of where they live, in perhaps some unexpected ways.
There is a Core Trail that has been curated by Dorset Visual Arts and
we have invited our members to join in as Fringe events by opening
their studios. Consequently some activities are free and some
ticketed, with limited availability for unique opportunities. They are
led by people with renowned imagination and talent who will
inspire you and engage you, and where food is concerned nourish
you with that too.

1 Food & Still Life Photography
Master Class with Robert Golden
International Photographer, Filmmaker, Writer
SPECIAL EVENT - Friday 5th April 10am - 4pm (see pg 7 for other event)
This master class will help one to think
about what food still life is. Robert will
discuss its history and share stories and
images from his long and distinguished
experience. He will demonstrate lighting as
well as helping participants to understand
tonal range, pre-visualisation, creating
equivalents between thoughts, feelings
and one’s photographs. Crucially, to
understand ‘presence’ in photographs. You
may bring a photo of your own to discuss.
BIOGRAPHY
Robert Golden began his career as a
photojournalist in the USA and England. He
became a celebrated food photographer
and has directed over 900 commercials,
winning numerous prestigious
international awards. He has written and
filmed 26 documentaries and illustrated
over 30 cookery books. He is passionate
about the politics of food.

A uniquely different event. Hosted by
John and Jenny, join Robert Golden
to watch two films from his series
entitled ‘Savouring’. Each celebrates
an endangered farming tradition
practiced in Europe and the community
that has sustained it. The films are an
appetising treat for the eye and the
heart. Robert said, ‘people need to
be free to live a life defined by their traditions rather than be forced to conform
to what others would impose for the needs of the market, politics or profits.’
Very topical! After the films, everyone will adjourn to the kitchen to discuss and
SHARE IN MAKING A HEARTY BRUNCH; the recipe will be prompted by one of
the films. A guest chef will guide you.

The elder bushes and hedgerows are coming into bud, but what are rows of
cordials, pickles and jams in your larder without decorative labels?
This workshop with Hugh is your chance to design and make your own labels.
By very simple means of lino cut, potato cut and scraperboard you have the
opportunity to make your mark on the preserves you make.
You could also bring a recipe to decorate, or make your own wrapping paper,
invitations, letterheads and other home stationery. No special equipment or skill
is needed, just an enthusiasm for play and experimentation. All you learn here
can be taken home and developed on your own kitchen table.

Minterne House has been the home of the Churchill’s and Digby’s family for the
last 350 years and now the seat of the 12th Lord Digby. It was rebuilt in 1905
by Leonard Stokes after the previous house was destroyed by dry rot. Minterne
nestles in 1,300 acres of beautiful Dorset Countryside and is described by Simon
Jenkins in his book ‘England’s 1,000 Best Houses’, as a ‘Corner of Paradise’. The
house contains many interesting paintings and mementos of its past residents,
including the very special Churchill Tapestries and artefacts from HMS Trafalgar.
The tour will be followed by lunch in the dining room.
The two course lunch includes a glass of wine and soft drinks.
Attendees may then tour the gardens.

SPECIAL EVENT - PIN HOLE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP
Saturday 6th April 10am- 4pm
Explore the magic of pin-hole photography using the renowned gardens and
external architecture of Minterne House as stimulus.
Artist photographer, Louise Lobban will show you how to make a pin-hole
camera, how to use it and how to develop the images you take. Everyone taking
part will leave with examples of their work. Some will be scanned and up-loaded
to a website. This is a magical process....and you will have an introduction from
the head gardener too.
Louise Lobban is a Dorset-based artist who uses handmade pinhole cameras
to record the everyday world around her. The resulting photographic images
illuminate dimensions sometimes obscured by familiarity.
