houses on the tops of the walls. The river Euphrates ran through Babylon
under its walls providing its water supply. The wall contained twoleaved
gates of brass and iron.
God had predicted the fall of Babylon by King Cyrus through the
prophet Isaiah in chapter 45 of his writings. We read, “This is what the
Lord says to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I take hold of to
subdue nations before him and to strip kings of their armor, to open
doors before him so that gates cannot be shut: I will go before you and
will level the mountains; I will break down the gates of bronze and cut
through bars of iron. I will give you the treasures of darkness, riches
stored in secret places.”
Cyrus’ victory
When the Persian army came upon ancient Babylon in the night, they
were astonished to see the river Euphrates dried up. The Persian soldiers
anticipated a great battle to still be under way shortly. As they
approached the city gates of bronze and iron, they found the main gate
torn to pieces! It looked like a huge hand had ripped it off its hinges.
Truly the Lord had gone before these men to dry up the waters and
destroy the gates of bronze. There was no military resistance from
Babylon because they had been celebrating a religious holiday and
were all drunk and asleep. If you read the story written by Daniel, the
king thought the city was impregnable and had a false sense of security!
Prophetic scriptures
The book of Revelation is so powerful. It predicts the rise of Babylon in
these end times. I believe satan has two different gates. First, as I have
discussed, there are broken hedges around people’s lives from either
their sin or the sin of their ancestors that allows the enemy access to
his/her life. This is a “gate of hell” where the enemy has gained legal
entrance to steal, kill, destroy, control, spiritually blind, and attempt to
take someone to hell. These types of entry gates exist in individuals,
homes, families, neighborhoods, churches, cities, and nations. Now let
me discuss the other gate of hell.
When the heavens are bronze
Bronze always speaks of judgment because of sin. It is like a fake gold.
Gold represents something heavenly or speaks of the things of God.
