from the
president
Welcome to the 45th Annual Indiana Interscholastic Athletic
Administration Association’s State Conference at Indianapolis’s Marriott
East. This year’s conference will bring together over 400 Athletic Secretaries,
Middle/Jr. and High School Athletic Administrators from around the state
and provide an opportunity to network and gain professional development.
I especially want to welcome those of you who are attending your
first State Conference, and to encourage you to attend the First Time
Attendees Orientation meeting on Sunday, March 17, at 1:15pm, where
you’ll receive beneficial information concerning the conference.
The planning for this year’s conference started immediately at the conclusion of last year’s conference; it takes
many individuals to make it successful. With input from last year’s evaluations, along with suggestions from
the various districts, this year’s conference offers a plethora of topics and ideas to assist the new and veteran
Athletic Administrator. Borrowing a phrase from the wedding world, this year’s conference will have “something
old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” I’ll let you figure out which is which.
Eleven LTC courses will open the conference on Saturday and Sunday along with several workshops. The
IHSAA Assistant Commissioners will be available Sunday afternoon for their yearly workshop on current
issues and events. At Sunday night’s Awards Banquet, we will showcase our IIAAA and NIAAA scholarship
winners along with honoring the district’s Middle/Jr. and High School Athletic Administrators of the year and
Charles Maas award winners.
Monday morning’s speaker will be Indianapolis Colts Community Spokesperson, Josh Bleill. Josh will kick off
the day with his inspirational and motivational speech “Best Foot Forward.”Also, this year we will have a guest
speaker at our business luncheon. Former Major League Pitcher Tommy John will be on hand to share a few
of his experiences in the “bigs.” Monday afternoon’s workshops should provide a variety of opportunities to
gain some professional knowledge and, for the third straight year, Monday Night’s Social, which will include
the fan favorite dueling pianos and will provide an evening to catch up with peers and vendors.
On Monday and Tuesday, over 130 vendors will be on hand in the atrium and exhibits hall to provide product
and service information that may make your job a little easier. This one stop shopping not only allows
you to save time by having all the vendors in one place but their presence also assists in keeping the
State Conference registration fees nominal.
Tuesday morning will start off with Sports Psychologist, Dr. Chris Carr, as he shares with us his thoughts on
“Developing Mental Toughness in High School Athletes.” IHSAA Commissioner Bobby Cox will wrap of the
general sessions with the popular Q/A followed by the luncheon Banquet and the much loved state conference
door prizes.
Finally, I would like to thank my wife of twenty-five years Judi, and our three children Chelsea, Keaton
and Kendyll not only for their support and encouragement this past year but also for the sacrifices they’ve
made the past twenty years I’ve served in athletic administration. I hope you’ll be able to pick up a couple of
ideas that you can implement this spring or next fall, but if not, at least you’ll have an opportunity to refresh,
recharge and reconnect. Thank you for attending, have a great conference and God Bless!
Orientation
For first-time attendees & New AD’s
Welcome to the 45th Annual IIAAA State Conference! We are pleased that you have taken this
opportunity for professional growth. One of the great things about the IIAAA is the camaraderie
among its members. Please feel free to ask plenty of questions and don’t be bashful about asking for
assistance. We are here to serve you!
Be sure to attend the First-time Attendees/New A.D.’s Conference
Orientation on Sunday, March 17th at 1:15 pm – in Salon 6.
Here are some helpful hints to fully enjoy this Conference:
CONFERENCE PROGRAM – Take some time after registration to read the Conference Program. It contains information
about all Conference activities and their sites.
HOTEL MAP – Familiarize yourself with the map of the Marriott East found in the Conference Program. It’s always a good
idea to walk around the hotel and find out where workshops and meetings that you want to attend will be.
VENDORS – Refer to the Exhibitor’s Map to quickly find a particular vendor in the Exhibit Hall. Every vendor and their
specialty is listed in the program.
EXHIBIT HALL – The Exhibit Hall will be open from 8:00 am until 4:30 pm on Monday, March 18th and from 7:30 am until
11:00 am on Tuesday, March 19th. Please visit the Exhibit Hall frequently and support our vendors.
DOOR PRIZES – Plan to participate in the Door Prize drawings that take place throughout the Conference. Most of
these are held in the Exhibit Hall, but there are also drawings held at the Sunday night Conference Banquet, the Working
Luncheon on Monday, and the Tuesday Conference Luncheon. Remember, a brand new TV will be given away on Monday
night at the Social!! Remember, to win a door prize, you must be present to win!
50/50 DRAWING – Be sure to purchase some 50/50 Raffle tickets sold throughout the Conference by some of the retired
members of our organization. The 50/50 drawings will be held at the Conference Luncheon on Tuesday, March 19th.
HOSPITALITY ROOM – The Hospitality Room will be located in room #160 and will be open throughout the Conference.
This is a great place to meet colleagues and make new friends. There is no charge, so visit often!
SOCIAL TIME – Come and join your colleagues from 5:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. on Monday, March 18th at a social gathering
in the Freedom Ballroom. There will be door prizes, beverages, hors d’oeuvres, and entertainment from two dueling
pianists. This should be a great evening of fellowship and fun!
WORKSHOPS/GENERAL SESSIONS – You’ll have great opportunities to hear some terrific ideas and concepts in athletic
administration as well as interact with tremendous speakers.
CRACKER BARRELS – Attend the Class Cracker Barrel sessions to discuss topics with your colleagues that are important
to our organization.
CONFERENCE BANQUET and LUNCHEONS – Attend these cornerstones of our annual Conference. You’ll have the
opportunity to attend a wonderful award program honoring top athletic administrators and participate in the Annual
Business Meeting during the Working Luncheon.
Guest speaker #1
Corporal
Joshua Bleill
Corporal Joshua Bleill graduated from Greenfield Central High School, in
Greenfield, Indiana, and attended Purdue University. He joined the Marine
Corps Reserves in 2004 and was activated for a tour of duty in Iraq with the
First Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment.
Bleill was conducting combat patrols in Fallujah, Iraq, on October 15, 2006, when he was seriously wounded by an
improvised explosive device (IED) that struck his vehicle. He suffered multiple injuries, including the loss of both his legs
above the knees.
In the many months of recovery following his injuries in Iraq, Bleill mentored other wounded warriors and participated in
a study of individuals using the newest technology for prosthetic legs. He has had unbelievable opportunities, including
receiving his Purple Heart from President George W. Bush and attending Super Bowl XLI in 2007 to see his favorite team,
the Indianapolis Colts, claim the Lombardi Trophy.
Bleill moved home to Indiana in August 2008 and was married to his wife, Nikki, in April 2009. He recently built a home in
Carmel and has joined the Indianapolis Colts as a community spokesperson.
given to the player who best exemplifies the fighting spirit and competitive desire to win (as exhibited by former MLB manager Fred
Hutchinson); 1981 recipient of the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award, given to the player who best exemplifies Gehrig’s character and
integrity both on and off the field; Seemingly permanently damaged the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching arm during the 1974
season. As a result, doctors performed a revolutionary procedure known now as “Tommy John Surgery,” replacing the ligament in the
elbow of his pitching arm with a tendon from his right forearm; Compiled a career record of 4-1 with a 2.08 ERA in seven League
Championship Series starts; and was 2-1 with a 2.67 ERA in six World Series appearances. Finished second in the Cy Young Award
balloting at the end of both the 1977 and 1979 seasons, just a few years after the now-famous “Tommy John Surgery” on his elbow;
26 seasons as a pro with 288 career victories and 2,245 career strikeouts and a career ERA of 3.34; Pitched final game on May 25,
1989 for the New York Yankees.
scholarship winners
Alexandra Bostic
Alexandra is a senior at Rising Sun High School. She has a 4.5 weighted GPA, 3.97
non-weighted. She is a varsity letter winner in three sports: Volleyball, Basketball and
Softball; having received All-Conference/All-Sectional awards in both volleyball and
softball. Miss Bostic also received the Ohio River Valley Volleyball Mental Attitude award.
Alexandra participates in eight school clubs and groups plus has been involved in ten
community volunteer activities. She is active in her church as a children’s teacher and
as a song leader. She is also a member of the IHSAA Student Advisory group. Excerpts
from Alexandra’s essay reads: “How I perform on the court and in the classroom sets an example for younger student/
athletes. A quote from Joe DiMaggio says that some kid may be seeing me for the first or last time, I owe them my best.
This quote encourages me to perform my very best”. She further states “I realize that while athletics has played a huge
role up to this point, I have to use these experiences to help me excel in the next phase. I am not going to be a professional
athlete but I believe these lessons will help me to become a successful professional”.
Alexandra plans to attend Indiana University and major in Pre-Dentistry. Alexandra is the daughter of Noel and Jennifer
Bostic. Noel is the athletic director at Rising Sun High School.
IIAAA salutes and recognizes Alexandra Bostic, 2013 IIAAA Scholarship Winner.
Jevin Redman
Jevin is a senior at Mt. Vernon High School. He has a 3.8 GPA and participates in three
sports; he earned nine varsity letters in Tennis, Basketball and Baseball. He was All-
between classes. Jevin has volunteered in the community with summer youth camps,
soup kitchens and Mission at the Cross.
Excerpts from Jevin’s essay reads: “Having two older brothers who were three sport
athletes made me want to be like them. Sports have taught me many valuable lessons
that I will carry with me throughout life. Tough losses have taught me how to bounce
back and big wins have taught me not to get too high. I have learned not to get too
comfortable or satisfied with what I have. There is always room for improvement. What
has made sports fun is the friendships I have developed with teammates and athletes
from opposing teams and the working with a team toward a common goal”.
Jevin plans to attend the University of Southern Indiana and major in Marketing with a minor in Radio Broadcasting. Jevin
is the son of Gary and Geralyn Redman. Gary is the athletic director at Mt. Vernon High School, Mt. Vernon, Indiana.
