Purpose This Pharmaceutical Care Services Plan describes current provision of community pharmacy services within NHS Lanarkshire at 1 st April 2011. It is expected that this document shall evolve over time as our expectations and vision for pharmaceutical services change and develop in years to come. Information is presented for NHS Lanarkshire as a whole and subdivided into 12 major towns/ areas within the Health Board. The prime purpose of this document is to summarise current service provision so that potential applicants for a new community pharmacy contract may consider the needs of the Board when considering their application. The plan will also be referred to by the Board’s Pharmacy Practices Committee hearings. 2
Background to NHS Lanarkshire Lanarkshire is predominantly urban but with a significant rural component towards the south of the county. It has a population of approximately 560,000 and contracted primary care services are delivered through 99 General Medical Practices 81 General Dental Practices (excluding 5 who provide orthodontic services only) 95 Optometric Practices 121 Community Pharmacies which are widespread throughout the Health Board area. An analysis of the health care needs and priorities of NHS Lanarkshire residents can be found via the website below which links to the most recent report of the Director of Public Health: http://www.nhslanarkshire.org.uk/Services/PublicHealth/directors-annual-report-2009- 10/Pages/Introduction.aspx Community Pharmacy Services Pharmaceutical care is currently provided across Lanarkshire through a network of 121 community pharmacies included in the Board’s Pharmaceutical List. Presently there is one pharmacy included in the Board’s Provisional Pharmaceutical List until 25 th September 2011 (subject to any application for an extension of this date up to a period of nine months). Seventeen factors which are important for characterising community pharmacy services and how they address the needs of the local population are shown below. Accessibility to community pharmacies by the general public is a major consideration. ADEQUACY COMMENT Given the diverse nature of Lanarkshire’s geography we have not, at this time, set standards for either distance from or travel time to a community pharmacy. We believe that the travel time to a pharmacy within each of the localities should be appropriate for the rurality of that locality. This issue is considered on an individual basis at PPC hearings and takes factors such as public transport availability and the particular needs of vulnerable members of the community such as frail elderly and mothers with babies into account. 3
