Community Education and Engagement
Firefighters don’t just wait for fire and other emergencies to happen.
MFB is very active in preventing fires and in educating the people of Melbourne
to be responsible for their own fire safety and to know what to do if they do
have a fire in their home or somewhere else.
Firefighters attend many community events, make presentations and run
programs and campaigns that all aim to spread home fire safety messages.
MFB has an educational mobile unit called SmokeBUSter.
Structural Fire Safety and Building Inspections
MFB gives advice and comment to the Community,
Industry and to Government Departments on the fire
safety of buildings before they are built. MFB is also
busy helping to maintain and improve the level of fire
safety of Melbourne's existing buildings.
Fire Investigation
The MFB Fire
Investigation and
Analysis Unit’s job
is to improve
community safety by
finding out what
has caused fires
and then working to
find ways that will
stop other fires
happening.
Hydrant Indicating and
Inspection
MFB firefighters often inspect
the fire hydrants near their
fire stations to make sure
they are in good working
order. Firefighters also place
indicators on power poles to
show there is a fire hydrant
nearby. These indicators are
blue reflective squares on a
white background and they
help firefighters to find the
hydrant more quickly,
especially at night.
