2009 <strong>Foreign</strong> <strong>Service</strong> Youth Contests & Awards<br />

The <strong>Foreign</strong> <strong>Service</strong> Youth Foundation<br />
strives to help the youth of<br />
America’s foreign affairs agencies<br />
adapt to their changing environments<br />
and benefit from their <strong>Foreign</strong> <strong>Service</strong><br />
experiences. Each year FSYF sponsors a<br />
number of contests and awards to recognize<br />
the unique and valuable contributions<br />
of America’s <strong>Foreign</strong> <strong>Service</strong><br />
youth. More information on each contest,<br />
including topic questions, themes,<br />
requirements and entry forms, can be<br />
found on the FSYF Web site at www.<br />
fsyf.org. In addition to receiving cash<br />
prizes, winners will be honored at an<br />
awards ceremony hosted by FLO at the<br />
Department of State in Washington,<br />
D.C., in July.<br />
KidVid Contest, Deadline April 15<br />
Family members ages 10 to 18 of<br />
U.S. government direct-hire and contract<br />
employees who are assigned to a<br />
U.S. mission are invited to participate<br />
in the KidVid contest, sponsored by<br />
FSYF and the Transition Center’s Overseas<br />
Briefing Center. Create a DVD<br />
showing typical daily life for the FS<br />
community at your post and submit it<br />
to OBC by April 15, and you could win<br />
a cash prize.<br />
Here, There & Everywhere —<br />
the Newsletter by and for FS Kids<br />
Join us on April 18 from 10 a.m. to 1<br />
p.m. in the State Room at Oakwood<br />
Falls Church for a writers’ workshop to<br />
produce the May 2009 edition of Here,<br />
There & Everywhere. Lunch will be provided<br />
and the theme will be announced<br />
in advance. RSVP to fsyf@fsyf.org.<br />
Overseas youth may contribute articles<br />
and illustrations on the given theme by<br />
e-mail or fax.<br />
Community <strong>Service</strong> Awards,<br />
Deadline April 24<br />
The FSYF Community <strong>Service</strong><br />
Awards, sponsored by Clements International,<br />
honor <strong>Foreign</strong> <strong>Service</strong> youth<br />
Each year FSYF sponsors a<br />
number of contests and awards<br />
to recognize the unique and<br />
valuable contributions of<br />
America’s <strong>Foreign</strong> <strong>Service</strong> youth.<br />
who have demonstrated outstanding<br />
volunteer efforts at home or abroad either<br />
in community service or in service<br />
to their peers, while facing the challenges<br />
of growing up in an internationally<br />
mobile lifestyle. Nominate your<br />
child, your friend or yourself by April<br />
24 for a chance to win a $1,500 savings<br />
bond.<br />
Art Contest, Deadline April 30<br />
<strong>Foreign</strong> <strong>Service</strong> youth ages 5 to 18<br />
are invited to participate in the FSYF<br />
Art Contest, sponsored by the State Department<br />
Federal Credit Union. Submit<br />
your flat artwork (no larger than<br />
22” x 28”) created in any medium (excluding<br />
graphic design) to FSYF by<br />
April 30. SDFCU will award cash prizes<br />
ranging from $100 to $500 to winners<br />
in three age groups (5-8, 9-12 and 13-<br />
18).<br />
Essay Contest, Deadline April 30<br />
<strong>Foreign</strong> <strong>Service</strong> teens are invited to<br />
participate in the FSYF Essay Contest,<br />
sponsored by McGrath Real Estate<br />
<strong>Service</strong>s. Write an essay of fewer than<br />
1,000 words that addresses the topic<br />
question and submit it to FSYF before<br />
April 30, and you could win $750, $500,<br />
$250 or $100.<br />
Spring Away Day is May 2,<br />
Registration Deadline April 15<br />
Join us on May 2 for an all-day, outdoor<br />
adventure at Poplar Ridge, the experiential<br />
learning challenge course at<br />
the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.<br />
Transportation is provided.<br />
Priority will be given to FS youth who<br />
are moving overseas in summer 2009.<br />
Younger kids will focus on teamwork<br />
and confidence-building activities close<br />
to the ground. Teens will venture onto<br />
the high elements. RSVP to fsyf@fsyf.<br />
org by April 15. Space is limited.<br />

Increase of $5,000<br />
in DACOR College<br />
Scholarships<br />
The AFSA Scholarship Fund is<br />
pleased to announce that Diplomats<br />
and Consular Officers, Retired has increased<br />
its total undergraduate financial<br />
aid scholarships for <strong>Foreign</strong> <strong>Service</strong><br />
children for the 2009-2010 school<br />
year, from $35,000 to $40,000. To<br />
streamline the program and lower administrative<br />
costs, <strong>Foreign</strong> <strong>Service</strong> children<br />
apply under AFSA’s Financial Aid<br />
Scholarship program for such awards.<br />
To be eligible for the DACOR awards, a<br />
student must be pursuing a foreign<br />
affairs career. Currently, the DACOR<br />
scholarships are awarded under the<br />
names of Heyward G. Hill ($25,000)<br />
and Harriet C. Thurgood ($15,000).<br />
Additional monies are from a bequest<br />
from Virginia Thurgood Bingham,<br />
Harriet’s sister. ❒<br />
