Rocket City Rednecks

Huntsville, Alabama, is also called “Rocket City” and is home to the 

“Rocket City Rednecks” – a group of real-life redneck geniuses who 

apply backwoods know-how to big questions in science, technology 

and engineering. 

Travis Taylor, the ringleader of the “Rocket City Rednecks”, has a PhD in 

engineering and Top Secret clearance with the U. S. government. Besides 

being typical Deep South, Huntsville is also the home of the U. S. Space 

and Rocket Center, where NASA began in the 1950s. When NASA, the 

Department of Defense, or private industry needs someone to solve a big 

scientific problem, Travis is their man. Joining him is a group of backwater 

Einsteins like Rog, a guy with a genius IQ of 160; Pete, an optical scientist 

who designs satellites at the U. S. Space and Rocket Center; and Travis’ 

dad Charles, one of NASA’s original engineers.

Invisible Universe

Science, technology and adventure are compellingly brought together in 

this two-part journey into the world of the invisible. In Part I, “In the Blink 

of an Eye”, we look through the lens of the latest high-speed cameras to 

see movements that are many thousands of times faster than our eyes 

can normally register. When filming at up to 300,000 frames a second, we 

can follow the path of a projectile with the naked eye. In Part II, “Hidden 

Revelations”, a hair-raising ride on a rollercoaster or alongside camera 

drones in extra-slow motion lets us experience the magic of speed and the 

limitations of human vision. 

In both episodes, the movements of top athletes and extremely rapid 

animals are slowed down to show their details, while scientists explain 

the secrets of these speed talents by using special cameras, gripping 

experiments and extraordinary images.

This one-off investigative documentary uncovers the tragic story of an 

entire town in the Ukraine doomed to deal with the dreadful consequences 

of living near a uranium mine and processing plant. In the 1950s, high 

concentrations of uranium were discovered here and the sleepy village 

soon became a neat elite town with a difference: it was a secret. Its 

inhabitants led privileged lives, but now the mine is closed and they have 

to deal with the shocking fall-out: The town’s streets, the ground, water 

and even the air is toxic. All of it has been dangerously contaminated 

with radiation and is shot through with lethal ‘hot particles’. Virtually 

all of the residents are sick. It is as shocking a story as it is personal, 

gripping and emotional. 

The facts are cemented by experts while witnesses tell their own 

dramatic stories. Their frank and honest accounts underline the gravity 

of the situation and the hushed-up reality of living in a doomed town.

effects of a nuclear accident in 1966. These ‘radioactive detectives’

Jungle Book Bear

The role models for Baloo – Mowgli’s companion in the Jungle Book – are 

India’s sloth bears. Surprisingly little is known about this secretive, 

night-active species. They have also never been portrayed in a natural 

history program before. Over a period of three years, these elusive creatures 

were filmed at daytime. Behavior unknown to scientists was discovered, 

such as the mouth feeding of cubs by their mothers. HD high-speed cameras 

with up to 2,000 frames per second give the film a special look.

Germany’s Wild Wolves

Wolves – some see in them predatory beasts, others romanticize them as 

mythical creatures. But does their fabled competitive hierarchy also exist in 

the wild? Over a period of three years, our filmmaker obtained unique 

footage of a family of wild wolves as has never been seen before in Europe. 

This is the first documentary about wild wolves in Germany shot exclusively 

in the wild; it shows how similar the social structures of humans and wolves 

are and dispels myths about a fascinating wild animal.

Pumas are powerful and rarely filmed predators. This documentary follows 

a puma mother and her three cubs in the Torres del Paine National Park in 

southern Chile. State-of-the-art HD technique, thermo- and remote-controlled

and her family. The film delivers high-end scenes of one of the most beautiful 

regions of the world, with spectacular granite peaks, turquoise-blue lakes,

The Phantom Cat

The South American Pantanal is a vast network of swamps and rivers, 

tropical forests and savannas. Nowhere else on our planet live as many 

jaguars as in this area. Their hunting grounds are so vast, that it is 

almost impossible to discover the elusive cats. The film provides deep 

insights into their life: it shows how they hunt, mate and even how they 

take a little nap during the midday heat. One of the film’s highlights is 

a jaguar killing a caiman – an at least equally dangerous predator.

of national parks. It is thus not surprising that many animals live there

the world’s attention on the dangers looming in deep-sea oil drilling.

Swamp Men

Huntsville, Alabama, is also called “Rocket City” and is home to the 

“Rocket City Rednecks” – a group of real-life redneck geniuses who

Wolfblood 


Maddy Smith is an almost normal teen living with her parents in a 

small rural town. The “almost” is because she’s a Wolfblood! Neither 

completely wolves nor humans, Wolfbloods have great powers – super 

speed, strength and senses – and can change from one form to another. 

Just as Maddy’s getting ready for her first transformation, a new boy, 

Rhydian, starts at her school – and they both instinctively know their 

true nature. Rhydian helps Maddy master her first challenge, but after 

that, she’s got to learn to control her powers on her own. Rhydian, 

meanwhile has to cope with his mother, a “wild” Wolfblood who wants 

her son to roam free as a wolf. 

For both Maddy and Rhydian, the main question is “As we grow up, how 

do we know who we should be?” – a question only they can answer in this 

thrilling CBBC/ZDF/ZDF Enterprises coproduction.
