These regulations should be read <strong>in</strong> conjunction <strong>with</strong> the Institute’s Academic Regulations.<br />

1. Admission and Entry<br />

1.1 General Academic Admission<br />

a) Candidates are required to have ga<strong>in</strong>ed:<br />

i) a m<strong>in</strong>imum of 12 credits at NCEA <strong>Level</strong> 1 <strong>in</strong> either English, Māori or Maths, or<br />

ii)<br />

iii)<br />

a C grade <strong>in</strong> School <strong>Certificate</strong> English, or<br />

equivalent Unit Standards.<br />

1.2 Special Admission<br />

Domestic applicants aged 20 years or above who have not met the General Admission or entry<br />

requirements for a programme but whose skills, education or work experience <strong>in</strong>dicate that they<br />

have a reasonable chance of success 1 may be eligible for Special Admission. Special admission<br />

will be granted at the discretion of the relevant Head of School/Centre Director or designated<br />

nom<strong>in</strong>ee. Such applicants may be required to successfully complete a foundation, bridg<strong>in</strong>g or<br />

tertiary <strong>in</strong>troductory programme as a condition of entry <strong>in</strong>to higher level programmes.<br />

1.3 Provisional Entry<br />

Domestic applicants aged under 20 years who have not met the general academic admission and<br />

entry criteria for a programme but who can demonstrate a reasonable chance of success<br />

through other educational atta<strong>in</strong>ment and/or work or life experience may be eligible for<br />

provisional entry at the discretion of the relevant Head of School/Centre Director or designated<br />

nom<strong>in</strong>ee. Provisional entry places restrictions on re‐enrolment to be lifted if the applicant’s<br />

performance is deemed satisfactory by the relevant Head of School/Centre Director or<br />

designated nom<strong>in</strong>ee.<br />

1.4 Selection Criteria<br />

a) Candidates are required <strong>in</strong> their application to <strong>in</strong>dicate whether they have been convicted<br />

of a crim<strong>in</strong>al offence. Candidates should be aware that some types of crim<strong>in</strong>al<br />

convictions may limit their ability to secure practicum placements, and thus to complete<br />

the programme requirements, or to ga<strong>in</strong> employment <strong>in</strong> the service sector.<br />

b) Candidates may be required to attend a selection meet<strong>in</strong>g and an <strong>in</strong>dividual selection<br />

<strong>in</strong>terview. Selection will be determ<strong>in</strong>ed on the basis of candidates hav<strong>in</strong>g demonstrated<br />

<strong>in</strong> their <strong>in</strong>terview:<br />

i) the ability to obta<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry placement opportunities <strong>with</strong><strong>in</strong> the service sector,<br />

and<br />

ii)<br />

iii)<br />

iv)<br />

actively develop<strong>in</strong>g skills and knowledge to support these placements, and<br />

academic abilities to complete the programme requirements, and<br />

commitment to the area of study.<br />

1.5 English Language Requirements<br />

Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English<br />

Language Test System (IELTS) score of 5.5 <strong>with</strong> no <strong>in</strong>dividual band score lower than 5.0; or<br />

equivalent.<br />

2. Transfer of Credit<br />

2.1 100% transfer of credit is available for this programme (both formal transfer of credit and<br />

recognition of prior learn<strong>in</strong>g).<br />

3. Programme Requirements<br />

3.1 Every candidate for the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Service</strong> <strong>Sector</strong> (<strong>Level</strong> 3) <strong>with</strong> <strong>strands</strong> <strong>in</strong> Hospitality,<br />

Retail, and Tourism shall to the satisfaction of the Academic Board follow a programme of study<br />

for a period of normally not less than one semester.<br />

3.2 Each candidate’s programme of study shall comprise all modules listed <strong>in</strong> Group A of Section 6,<br />

and one of the <strong>strands</strong> listed <strong>in</strong> Group B, for a total of 53‐56 credits.<br />

4. Completion of the Programme<br />

4.1 A candidate may take up to one year to complete this programme, unless an extension is<br />

granted by special permission of the Centre Director or designated equivalent.<br />

5. Award of the Qualification<br />

5.1 Candidates who successfully complete the requirements as specified <strong>in</strong> Section 3 will receive the<br />

award of the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Service</strong> <strong>Sector</strong> (<strong>Level</strong> 3) <strong>with</strong> one of the follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>strands</strong>:<br />

Hospitality; or Retail; or Tourism.<br />
