OVERVIEW<br />

<strong>Wintec</strong>’s sports laboratories are<br />

accredited by Sport Science New Zealand<br />

and are considered to be amongst the<br />

best sport science facilities in<br />

New Zealand. You will study a range of<br />

subjects designed to develop<br />

well-rounded practitioners of applied<br />

sport and exercise science. These include:<br />

• Physical education<br />

• Coaching<br />

• Exercise physiology<br />

• Sport nutrition<br />

• Sport psychology<br />

• Biomechanics<br />

• Sport rehabilitation<br />

• Personal training<br />

• Community sports development<br />

WHAT’S <strong>IN</strong>VOLVED<br />

As a student, you’ll have access to the<br />

same state-of-the-art sport testing<br />

facilities and consultants used by national<br />

and international athletes. You will use<br />

biomechanics, exercise physiology and<br />

other laboratory equipment including<br />

heat chambers and altitude simulators.<br />

You will work on real research projects<br />

using real clients with the opportunity<br />

to work alongside respected industry<br />

professionals.<br />

Guest speakers from a variety of<br />

disciplines provide inspiration, and your<br />

tutors are all active practitioners current<br />

in their knowledge and disciplines. Many<br />

of them work with elite athletes and<br />

teams in sports including rowing, cycling<br />

and athletics.<br />

ACTIVE TRA<strong>IN</strong><strong>IN</strong>G<br />

Work placement on this programme totals<br />

70 hours – 40 at a local gymnasium and<br />

the remainder in the area or specialisation<br />

of your choice such as physiotherapy,<br />

nutrition, physical education, community<br />

development and regional sports trusts.<br />

PARTNERSHIPS MAKE A DIFFERENCE<br />

<strong>Wintec</strong> is a partner of the New Zealand<br />

Academy of Sport and maintains close<br />

links with Elite and High Performance<br />

Sport. We also partner with Sport Waikato<br />

and many Waikato secondary schools,<br />

which is a real advantage when it comes<br />

to work placements. And with Waikato<br />

BOP Magic, Netball Waikato, and Waikato<br />

Rugby using <strong>Wintec</strong>’s state-of-the-art<br />

facilities, our students get to observe<br />

some of the country’s top professional<br />

athletes and coaches in action.<br />

ENTRY CRITERIA - SUMMARY<br />

To enter this programme you must have the<br />

<strong>Wintec</strong> Certificate in Sport and Recreation<br />

(Level 4) or equivalent, or 56 credits at<br />

NCEA Level 3, or 60 credits at NCEA Level 2<br />

across four subjects, or equivalent.<br />

GRADUATE DIPLOMA <strong>IN</strong> <strong>SPORT</strong><br />

<strong>AND</strong> EXERCISE SCIENCE<br />

(LEVEL 7) SP0801<br />

DURATION: February and<br />

July for one year<br />

Candidates are required to be a degree<br />

graduate from a New Zealand Institution<br />

or an approved and accredited institution<br />

overseas, or be able to demonstrate<br />

appropriate equivalent experience.<br />
