OVERVIEW
Wintec’s sports laboratories are
accredited by Sport Science New Zealand
and are considered to be amongst the
best sport science facilities in
New Zealand. You will study a range of
subjects designed to develop
well-rounded practitioners of applied
sport and exercise science. These include:
• Physical education
• Coaching
• Exercise physiology
• Sport nutrition
• Sport psychology
• Biomechanics
• Sport rehabilitation
• Personal training
• Community sports development
WHAT’S INVOLVED
As a student, you’ll have access to the
same state-of-the-art sport testing
facilities and consultants used by national
and international athletes. You will use
biomechanics, exercise physiology and
other laboratory equipment including
heat chambers and altitude simulators.
You will work on real research projects
using real clients with the opportunity
to work alongside respected industry
professionals.
Guest speakers from a variety of
disciplines provide inspiration, and your
tutors are all active practitioners current
in their knowledge and disciplines. Many
of them work with elite athletes and
teams in sports including rowing, cycling
and athletics.
ACTIVE TRAINING
Work placement on this programme totals
70 hours – 40 at a local gymnasium and
the remainder in the area or specialisation
of your choice such as physiotherapy,
nutrition, physical education, community
development and regional sports trusts.
PARTNERSHIPS MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Wintec is a partner of the New Zealand
Academy of Sport and maintains close
links with Elite and High Performance
Sport. We also partner with Sport Waikato
and many Waikato secondary schools,
which is a real advantage when it comes
to work placements. And with Waikato
BOP Magic, Netball Waikato, and Waikato
Rugby using Wintec’s state-of-the-art
facilities, our students get to observe
some of the country’s top professional
athletes and coaches in action.
ENTRY CRITERIA - SUMMARY
To enter this programme you must have the
Wintec Certificate in Sport and Recreation
(Level 4) or equivalent, or 56 credits at
NCEA Level 3, or 60 credits at NCEA Level 2
across four subjects, or equivalent.
GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN SPORT
AND EXERCISE SCIENCE

OVERVIEW
If you want to take your study in Sport and
Exercise Science further or complement
your first degree with specific Sport and
Exercise Science knowledge and skills, this
is the programme for you. It allows you
to tailor your programme to suit specific
interests and goals with options in:
• Biomechanics
• Exercise Physiology
• Sport Coaching
• Exercise Rehabilitation
• Sport Nutrition
• Sport and Exercise Psychology

ENTRY CRITERIA - SUMMARY
Candidates are required to be a degree
graduate from a New Zealand Institution
or an approved and accredited institution
overseas, or be able to demonstrate
appropriate equivalent experience.
