YOUR FUTURE IN SPORT – SCIENCE AND DEVELOPMENT 

SO WHAT WOULD I DO ALL DAY? 

That depends on the area you decide 

best fits your goals and interest. 

SPORT COACHES spend their days helping individual 

athletes and teams improve their sporting skills. 

Your day could include helping athletes learn 

the rules of a sport, advising on tactics and the 

psychology of a sport, organising practice sessions 

and competitions, developing training programmes, 

identifying and encouraging talented players, 

selecting teams, ensuring player safety and looking 

after sports equipment. 

A PHYSICAL TRAINING INSTRUCTOR guides, 

teaches and supports clients to maintain and 

improve their fitness levels. They also run adventure 

and survival training exercises. So your day could 

see you running training classes either in the gym or 

outdoors, testing individual fitness levels, designing 

fitness programmes and looking after exercise and 

sports equipment. 

If the impact of nutrition on performance interests 

you then so will a career as a WELL-BEING AND 

SPORTS NUTRITIONIST. Providing nutritional 

advice to maximise performance and well-being for 

athletes, sports teams, and individuals interested in 

fitness and health. 

Helping restore function and independence to 

someone with a disability or problem caused by 

physical, neurological or other disorders is the role 

of a REHABILITATION TRAINER. Over the course of 

a day you may assess and diagnose patients’ injuries 

or functional problems, use a range of treatments 

to reduce their pain and improve movement, plan 

and demonstrate exercises for patients to do 

themselves, keep a record of their progress, and 

educate clients on how to prevent further injury. 

As a dedicated SPORTSPERSON you will be 

laying your body on the line everyday. You’ll be 

training, developing your skill set, consulting with 

health professionals, competing nationally or 

internationally, maybe captaining a team, 

addressing community groups and interacting 

with the media.

OVERVIEW 

Wintec’s sports laboratories are 

accredited by Sport Science New Zealand 

and are considered to be amongst the 

best sport science facilities in 

New Zealand. You will study a range of 

subjects designed to develop 

well-rounded practitioners of applied 

sport and exercise science. These include:

WHAT’S INVOLVED 

As a student, you’ll have access to the 

same state-of-the-art sport testing 

facilities and consultants used by national 

and international athletes. You will use 

biomechanics, exercise physiology and 

other laboratory equipment including 

heat chambers and altitude simulators. 

You will work on real research projects 

using real clients with the opportunity 

to work alongside respected industry 

professionals. 

Guest speakers from a variety of 

disciplines provide inspiration, and your 

tutors are all active practitioners current 

in their knowledge and disciplines. Many 

of them work with elite athletes and 

teams in sports including rowing, cycling 

and athletics. 

ACTIVE TRAINING 

Work placement on this programme totals 

70 hours – 40 at a local gymnasium and 

the remainder in the area or specialisation 

of your choice such as physiotherapy, 

nutrition, physical education, community 

development and regional sports trusts.

Academy of Sport and maintains close 

links with Elite and High Performance 

Sport. We also partner with Sport Waikato 

and many Waikato secondary schools,

YOUR FUTURE IN FITNESS, OUTDOOR RECREATION AND MASSAGE 


There are several paths you could 

follow – what you do depends on 

which path you choose. 

As a FITNESS INSTRUCTOR you’ll be helping people 

improve their general fitness or train for a special 

event. This means your day could see you discussing 

clients’ goals, assessing their fitness and body types, 

and then designing fitness classes or individual 

programmes. You’ll also be working with clients 

one-on-one, ensuring correct techniques are used 

and providing basic nutritional and lifestyle advice. 

If fresh air, adventure and the great outdoors appeal 

then so will a career as an OUTDOOR RECREATION 

GUIDE and INSTRUCTOR. You’ll spend your time 

teaching or guiding outdoor activities such as rafting, 

kayaking, diving, caving and tramping. Your day could 

also include planning programmes, risk assessment, 

organising safety procedures, checking equipment, 

running rescue practices, organising bookings, food 

and transport and maintaining trip logbooks. 

As a MASSAGE THERAPIST your day will be spent 

treating a variety of ailments and helping people 

relax by massaging and kneading injured muscles 

and soft body tissue. Your role will also involve 

consulting with clients, taking their case history, 

assessing their physical condition and 

determining whether massage therapy can 

help them, preparing massage oils and waxes, 

and advising on exercise and lifestyle needs.

that’s what ensures a client loves their

OVERVIEW 

If you are a passionate, energetic 

person who wants to work with people 

designing, delivering and managing 

outdoor adventure and recreation 

experiences, then this programme is for 

you. It introduces you to a broad range 

of outdoor recreation experiences, 

encouraging a high degree of motivation, 

personal determination and teamwork 

whatever your age and ability. 

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL STUDY

HANDS-ON IS THE ONLY WAY 

You’ll go outdoor rock climbing, caving, 

bush tramping and kayaking and from

leadership for a variety of participants 

from school children to adults. 

For example, upon completion of this 

course it’s you who’ll have the know-how 

and practical skills to run a Top Town 

programme at a primary school. Please 

note, you will be required to attend 

practical sessions that run over weekends. 

WE WORK WITH THE INDUSTRY 

Wintec is closely linked and consults 

frequently with providers in the outdoor 

adventure industry to ensure course 

content is current and relevant. Guest 

Speakers will join your qualified tutors 

throughout the year to share their 

in-depth knowledge of particular fields.

You’ll have full access to Wintec’s modern 

gymnasium for training programmes and 

building up your personal fitness. 

WHAT A STUDY ENVIRONMENT! 

You’ll do the theory in class but as you’re 

learning about outdoor adventure and 

recreation, there’s only one place for it; 

the great outdoors! You will go caving and 

rock climbing at Waitomo Caves, kayaking 

in the many rivers in the region and hiking 

in the spectacular ranges surrounding 

Hamilton. The Waikato offers a huge 

variety of recreational activities right on 

our doorstep.

IT’S A HANDS-ON EXERCISE 

You’ll actively participate in a broad 

range of outdoor recreation experiences 

at an introductory level, encouraging 

a high degree of motivation, personal 

determination and teamwork. You’ll 

be administering and writing fitness 

programmes for aerobics and resistance 

training, and applying it to yourself and 

your peers. Please note, you will be 

required to attend practical sessions

YOUR FUTURE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION 


That depends on the environment 

you prefer to work in. 

An EARLY CHILDHOOD TEACHER spends their 

days educating and caring for young children in 

kindergartens, kōhanga reo, homebased childcare, 

Education Review Office, Ministry of Education or 

education and care centres. Your day could include 

planning daily programmes, implementing 

Te Whāriki – the early childhood curriculum, 

assessing children’s progress and discussing it 

with parents or caregivers and other education 

professionals, making learning resources, and if 

you’re a kaiako in kōhanga reo, helping children 

learn te reo Māori, and tikanga Māori. 

If working in a home environment appeals to you 

then chances are so would a career as a NANNY. 

In this role you’d be responsible for the care, 

well-being and education of infants, toddlers and 

children in a home enviroment. Your day could 

see you feeding, washing and dressing children, 

consulting with their parents/whānau on their 

learning and development, organising daily 

activities, driving children to and from school and 

other pastimes, planning and preparing meals, 

taking care of everyday household chores and 

caring for sick children in the home. You can work

OVERVIEW 

You will not only learn how to care 

for children, but also how to create a 

learning environment for them and 

how to guide their behaviour. This 

programme is approved by NZQA and 

NEONZ (Nanny Education of New Zealand) 

so you graduate with a nationally and 

internationally recognised qualification. 

IT’S NOT ALL THEORY 

Your tutors are experienced Early 

Childhood Teachers and classes include 

practical tasks, off-site trips and guest 

tutors covering specialist topics. You 

will also have the opportunity to put 

your knowledge and skills into practice 

completing one live-in and several live-out 

placements throughout the year. These 

placements are with families, child care 

centres and children with Special Needs. 


To enter this programme you must be 

17 years of age at 1 January in the year 

of enrolment, demonstrate the ability 

and level of maturity to complete the 

programme successfully as well as 

cope with the demands of working with 

children, have completed a minimum of 

four years secondary education with the

LIFE ON CAMPUS 

Wintec is located on three 

campuses in Hamilton city, and 

also delivers programmes in the 

wider Waikato region. 

HAMILTON CITY CAMPUS 

The City Campus is centrally 

located, with shops, the Waikato 

river, transport and cafés literally 

at your feet. 

It’s a vibrant and energising 

environment with outstanding 

facilities for learning and support. 

At the centre of campus is the 

Gallagher Hub housing a large 

computer study area containing 

over 130 computers (Mac and PC), 

a library, copying services, study

The City Campus also features 

lecture theatres that utilise the

station, art gallery, hairdressing 

and beauty clinics and student

ROTOKAURI CAMPUS 

The Rotokauri Campus is set on 

farmland about 10 minutes drive 

north of the central city. It has 

some of the best purpose-built 

training facilities in New Zealand, 

including sport science labs, a 

specialist training restaurant 

with kitchens, and fully equipped 

trades workshops. 

HAMILTON GARDENS CAMPUS 

The Horticulture Education 

Centre is a picturesque 

campus located in the 

world-renowned Hamilton

Wintec operates in Waikato

LEARNING MADE EASY AT WINTEC 

FOUNDATION STUDIES 

Not sure what you want to study? Been a while since 

you last studied? Worried or nervous about entering 

a study environment? The Certificate in Introduction 

to Study, Level 2 or 4, can help. 

COMPUTER ACCESS 

Computers are available to all enrolled students at 

all Wintec campuses. The Gallagher Hub at our City 

Campus has over 130 computers for students to use 

24 hours a day, seven days a week. 

It’s designed to prepare you for tertiary study by 

developing an understanding of what is expected 

at a tertiary level, and providing you with the skills, 

knowledge and confidence needed to succeed. 

STUDENT LEARNING SERVICES 

If you need help with your studies, there’s a team 

of people at Wintec whose job is to provide that 

help. They offer a mentoring programme along with 

one-on-one, small group and workshop sessions on 

topics ranging from introduction to study, reading 

and essay writing, to science, maths and study skills. 

LIBRARY 

There are two main libraries at Wintec – one on 

the City Campus and one at Rotokauri Campus. 

Both provide a huge range of resource material 

from books, newspapers, specialist journals to exam 

papers, DVDs, audiotapes and more. Thames and 

Te Kuiti Campuses also have library collections and 

material can be sent to students studying by 

distance learning. 

MOODLE 

Moodle is Wintec’s online learning and teaching tool 

containing programme material which may include 

lecture notes, research material and practice 

tests. If you have a computer and an internet 

connection you have Moodle at your fingertips, 

giving you the flexibility to study from home or 

anywhere, anytime. 

The City and Rotokauri campuses also have wireless 

hotspots and IT helpdesks to assist with using the 

computers, printers, scanners and Mytec. 

MYTEC 

Keep track of your timetable, check your emails, get 

your results, study online; do it all in one place, day 

or night, from anywhere, online in Mytec. 

MĀORI AND PASIFIKA STUDENTS 

Ki te whakakaha i te iwi hāpori mā te ara 

matauranga, rangahau arā umanga whanakenga. 

The Māori and Pasifika Learning and Support Centre, 

Te Kete Kōnae is a warm welcoming space that 

supports all students, their whānau and staff 

at Wintec with academic and learning, financial, 

cultural, pastoral and counselling support.
