These regulations should be read in conjunction with the Institute’s Academic Regulations.
1. General Academic Admission
a) Candidates are expected to have completed three years of secondary education and to
have gained
i) a minimum of 16 credits at NCEA Level 1, 8 of which must be English and 8 credits
must be in Mathematics, or equivalent; or
ii)
a qualification at Level 2 or higher in a related subject area
1.1 Special Admission
Domestic applicants aged 20 years or above who have not met the General Admission or entry
requirements for a programme but whose skills, education or work experience indicate that they
have a reasonable chance of success 1 may be eligible for Special Admission. Special admission
will be granted at the discretion of the relevant Head of School/Centre Director or designated
nominee. Such applicants may be required to successfully complete a foundation, bridging or
tertiary introductory programme as a condition of entry into higher level programmes.
1.2 Provisional Entry
Domestic applicants aged under 20 years who have not met the general academic admission and
entry criteria for a programme but who can demonstrate a reasonable chance of success
through other educational attainment and/or work or life experience may be eligible for
provisional entry at the discretion of the relevant Head of School/Centre Director or designated
nominee. Provisional entry places restrictions on re-enrolment to be lifted if the applicant’s
performance is deemed satisfactory by the relevant Head of School/Centre Director or
designated nominee.
1.3 Selection Criteria
a) Candidates must demonstrate a reasonable likelihood of success. They may be required
to complete a selection process which will include an interview and may include a Study
Skills assessment.
b) To meet legal and health requirements, candidates must by physically able to carry out
the practical components of the programmes.

1.4 English Language Requirements
Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English
Language Test System (IELTS) score of 5.5, with no individual band score lower than 5.0; or
equivalent.
2. Transfer of Credit
2.1 100% transfer of credit is available for this programme (both formal transfer of credit and
recognition of prior learning).
3. Programme Requirements
3.1 Every candidate for the Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 3) programme shall to the satisfaction
of the Academic Board follow a programme of study for a period of normally not less than two
semesters.
3.2 Each candidate for the Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 3) must successfully complete all the
modules listed in Section 6 totalling a minimum of 120 credits.
4. Completion of the Programme
4.1 A candidate may take up to 2 years to complete this programme, but an extension may be
granted by special permission of the Head of School/Centre Director.
5. Award of the Qualification
5.1 The Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 3) will be awarded to a candidate who has successfully
completed the programme requirements as specified in clauses 3.1and 3.2 of these regulations.
5.2 Candidates successfully completing all modules in Section 6: Group A and a minimum of 20
credits from Group B, with at least 10 credits at level 3, will be eligible for the award of the
National Certificate in Hairdressing (Salon Support) (Level 3)
