The City Campus is centrally located, with shops, the Waikato

is the Gallagher Hub housing a large computer study area 

containing over 130 computers (Mac and PC), a library, copying 

services, study rooms, café and event rooms.

ROTOKAURI CAMPUS 

The Rotokauri Campus is set on farmland about 10 minutes drive 

north of the central city. It has some of the best purpose-built 

training facilities in New Zealand, including sports science labs, 

engineering facilities, a specialist training restaurant, and fully 

equipped trades workshops. 

HAMILTON GARDENS CAMPUS 

This campus is located in the world-renowned Hamilton

tertiary provider may count as credits towards a tertiary 

qualification in your area of expertise and interest.

international students. This was important to my family since I was only 17 when

found the tutors very friendly and patient with me. It was helpful being able to talk

Our friendly International Centre team are ready to provide 

you with the support and advice you need to have a 

positive experience at Wintec. We can help you with your 

accommodation needs, getting you settled into your studies, 

emergency assistance and pastoral care. We also organise 

events and activities throughout the year to make you feel at 

home and celebrate your cultural diversity. You’ll find us in B 

Block at the City Campus. We also visit the Rotokauri Campus 

every Tuesday 12.00pm-1.00pm. 

From start to finish, we make sure you have access to the support 

facilities you need to succeed. There’s a medical centre and 

counselling service right here on campus, along with learning 

services. Our library is well resourced and staffed by qualified 

assistants. Our Student Enrolment Team can assist with your 

student visa and renewals online, and can help if you are eligible 

to transfer credits or gain credits through recognition of prior 

learning. Te Kete Kōnae is a warm welcoming space that supports 

Pasifika students with learning, cultural, pastoral and counselling 

support. Student Job Search can help you find temporary and part 

time work. When it’s time for you to graduate, our Careers Centre 

can provide one-on-one assistance to help you prepare your CV, 

get ready for interviews and help you in the right direction to get 

information on employment rights and employment contracts.

OVERVIEW 

This Diploma is designed to increase your language proficiency

in your area of expertise. The second part of the Diploma may 

be studied concurrently with the Diploma in Business Enterprise 

(Level 6) or the Certificate in Introduction to Study (Health) (Level 

4). This is an advanced programme that is recommended for

BACHELOR OF BUSINESS STUDIES*

OVERVIEW 

This Degree provides you with all the necessary theoretical and 

practical skills to advance successfully in the world of Business. 

At Wintec you are able to specialise in the areas of accounting, 

marketing or management and have the option of either a single 

major or a double major. Depending on the major you choose, 

the programme duration varies from three to four years.You 

will have the opportunity to study a broad range of specialist 

modules including; single majors in Accounting, Management, 

Marketing and double majors in Accounting and Management, 

Accounting and Marketing, Management and Marketing. 

STRONG INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIPS 

Wintec has strong partnerships with industry and business 

development groups to develop a programme structure that is 

both relevant and inspiring. In addition, Wintec has accreditation 

with the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA)

Wintec is planning to introduce a new business degree, the 

Bachelor of Applied Management. Subject to approval by the

new degree will replace the current Bachelor of Business 

Studies from February 2014. 

While the new degree is similar to the current one, it has the 

added value of having more majors and an internship in the 

third year. 

The Bachelor of Applied Management degree is practically 

focused to enhance graduates’ chances of employment.

VISUAL ARTS 

On this programme you are able to focus on the pathway of 

your choice including painting, sculpture, graphic design, digital 

media design, photography or moving image. The way you work 

at Wintec is stimulating and collaborative. For various projects 

and assignments you will join other Media Arts students from 

communication and commercial music – it’s an exhilarating way 

to learn, opening up your thinking and giving you the opportunity 

to work with other disciplines in a practical working environment. 

Writing is the major component of this endorsement. You’ll 

learn to write effective news stories, media releases and project 

briefs. You’ll write for the web, scripts for moving image and 

advertising campaigns for clients. Other components include 

media photography, digital publication, editing moving images 

and developing and designing campaigns. 

COMMERCIAL MUSIC 

The Commercial Music endorsement is for you if you wish to 

focus on the composition or production of music. A feature of 

this programme is its industry based projects where you gain 

real commercial experience. Your first year of study will include 

harmony, ear training, notation, songwriting, music technology, 

contemporary issues in music and communication skills. In your 

second and third years, you will specialise in your choice of music 

production, songwriting or contemporary music performance.

COMMUNICATION

respond to and anticipate new developments in the visual arts. 

The BMA Honours can be integrated in the Master of Arts for 

two years of postgraduate study. You will need to complete and

building construction and maintenance work, this is the

In Wintec’s Centre for Health and Social Practice learning facilities 

you will develop the knowledge and skills you need to become an 

in demand Registered Nurse in a variety of health care settings. 

At the completion of the programme, you sit a Nursing Council of 

New Zealand registration exam and exit with an internationally 

recognised degree. 

WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD 

Nursing is a hands-on career and that’s the way we teach it 

at Wintec. Our real world simulated learning area is set up as 

an actual ward where you practice on computerised patient 

simulation models that assume real life health issues. Your tutors 

are all experienced registered nurses with specific clinical skills, 

and you’ll also find many of your tutors are involved in research 

and clinical practise. This means that what you learn is as current 

as you can get! 

PRACTISE WHAT YOU LEARN 

You have the opportunity to integrate theory and procedure 

through clinical practice within a hospital and health care facility. 

You will do a minimum of 1100 hours across four of the following 

areas - chronicity disability, elderly care, acute, family and infant 

- learning on real patients under the supervision of a registered 

nurse at our partnership organisations: Waikato DHB, private 

hospitals, elderly care centres or Maori Health Providers. 

You will also need to provide two references, a Curriculum Vitae, 

a completed Health Declaration form and a personal statement. 

A PRIMARY HEALTH CARE NURSE works in a variety of roles 

encompassing population health, health promotion, disease 

prevention, wellness care, first-point-of-contact care and 

disease management for individuals, whanau, communities and 

populations. Positions include public health nurses, practice 

nurses, Plunket nurses, school nurses, rural nurses, sexual health 

nurses, mental health etc. 

If developing specialist skills in a particular area of nursing 

interests you, then consider a career as a HOSPITAL NURSE. 

In this role you could specialise in mental health, child health, 

aged care, oncology (cancer), intensive care, operating theatre, 

community health or workplace health and safety. 

Your day could be spent discussing, planning and carrying 

out nursing care in your specialist area, monitoring patients’ 

conditions and recording important changes, giving medications 

and intravenous drugs, educating patients and their families 

about health care needs and checking equipment and supplies. 

As an ENROLLED NURSE you will deliver nursing care and

A NURSE PRACTITIONER diagnoses, evaluates, treats and

A PRACTICAL APPROACH 

At Wintec we take a hands-on approach to learning. Using 

the latest hospital standard realistic models and props you’ll 

carry out simulations of birthing procedures, take recordings,

You’ll also engage in scenario work to practise dealing with 

the different situations a midwife can encounter. Wintec’s 

experienced, industry qualified tutors are often joined in 

workshops by guest speakers such as midwifery educators from 

the Waikato District Health Board. 

LEARNING ON THE JOB 

On this programme you have the opportunity to follow women 

through their pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatal care. In 

your first year you spend 16 weeks in clinical placements at birth 

centres, hospitals and various community agencies working under 

the supervision of a registered midwife. In your second year, your 

time in clinical placements is 30 weeks. In your third year you will 

spend just four weeks in class and the rest of the year on the job 

training working alongside registered midwives.

professional career in counselling. If you are already working 

in the areas of mental health, education or social services, this 

programme will give you a formal qualification. 

Upon completion of your degree, you’ll have a framework of

prepared to change – to grow both personally and professionally

As a student, you’ll have access to the same state-of-the-art 

sport testing facilities and consultants used by national and 

international athletes. You will use biomechanics, exercise 

physiology and other laboratory equipment including heat 

chambers and altitude simulators. You will work on real research 

projects using real clients with the opportunity to work alongside 

respected industry professionals. Guest speakers from a variety 

of disciplines provide inspiration, and your tutors are all active 

practitioners current in their knowledge and disciplines. Many 

of them work with elite athletes and teams in sports including 

rowing, cycling and athletics. 

ACTIVE TRAINING 

Work placement on this programme totals 70 hours - 40 at a local 

gymnasium and the remainder in the area or specialisation of 

your choice such as physiotherapy, nutrition, physical education, 

community development and regional sports trusts.

IT’S NOT ALL THEORY 

Your tutors are experienced Early Childhood Teachers and classes 

include practical tasks, off-site trips and guest tutors covering 

specialist topics. You will also have the opportunity to put your 

knowledge and skills into practice completing one live-in and several 

live-out placements throughout the year. These placements are with 

families, child care centres and children with Special Needs.

Exit Qualification: Graduate Certificate in Teaching English to 

Speakers of Other Languages (Level 7) 

OVERVIEW 

This programme is designed to provide you with the specialist 

knowledge and practical skills required to teach English to 

speakers of other languages. Upon the successful completion of 

the first five modules, you may exit with the Graduate Certificate 

in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (Grad Cert 

TESOL Level 7) qualification. You can also complete a further two 

modules and gain the Graduate Diploma in Teaching English to 

Speakers of Other Languages (Grad DipTESOL Level 7). 

PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE 

Wintec’s experienced TESOL lecturers will teach you the skills you 

need for working with English Language Learners (ELLs). You will 

also experience first-hand what it is like to learn a new language, 

with language specialists brought in to teach you another 

language. You will also observe English Language teachers and 

their students in primary, secondary and tertiary environments. 

APPLYING YOUR SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE 

You will learn new teaching and skills in an authentic classroom 

environment with real English language learners and reflect on 

your teaching experience in order to modify your practice. 

KNOWLEDGE 

You will learn or review key points of English grammar with 

particular reference to typical difficulties for English language 

learners. You will also acquire knowledge about socio-cultural, 

individual and language acquisition factors which impact on 

English language learning.

ACCIDENT INSURANCE 

The Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for 

all New Zealand citizens, residents, and temporary visitors to New Zealand, 

but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. Further 

information can be viewed on the ACC website at www.acc.co.nz 

MEDICAL AND TRAVEL INSURANCE 

International students (including group students) must have appropriate and 

current medical and travel insurance while in New Zealand. 

CODE 

The Waikato Institute of Technology has agreed to observe and be bound 

by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students. 

Copies of the Code are available from the New Zealand Ministry of Education 

website at www.minedu.govt.nz/international 

IMMIGRATION 

Full details of immigration requirements, advice on rights to employment in 

New Zealand while studying, and reporting requirements are available from 

Immigration New Zealand, and can be viewed

ELIGIBILITY FOR HEALTH SERVICES 

Most international students are not entitled to publicly funded health 

services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your 

visit, you may be liable for the full costs of that treatment. Full details on 

entitlements to publicly funded health services are available through the 

Ministry of Health, and can be viewed on their website at www.moh.govt.nz.

IELTS 

All referrals to IELTS refer to the Academic Requirements only. In all 

cases, IELTS assessments must be no less than 2 years old at the time of 

application. 

ADDITIONAL COSTS 

It is important that you pay for the full costs of all services requested 

along with your tuition fees payment. A receipt will only be issued once full 

payment has been received by Wintec. At the time of printing your total living 

expenses required per year for Visa purposes is $15,000 NZD. 

Some programmes have additional expenses such as books, stationary, 

uniforms, catering equipment and assignment materials. Prices vary so 

please enquire on application to a programme. Text books are usually 

between $75 - $110 each. 

REFUND POLICY 

By accepting a place in a programme or paying fees at Wintec, a student 

enters a contract with Wintec for the period of the programme. This 

means there is an obligation to pay the fee for one year or the length of 

the programme if less than one year. The refund policy is available on the 

website: www.wintec.ac.nz/international under ‘general information’. In 

the event of insufficient numbers of enrolments the programme may be 

cancelled and a refund will be given.
