“I chose to study at Wintec because it has a reputation as being a safe place for
international students. This was important to my family since I was only 17 when
I moved here. I enrolled into the Certificate in English (Level 5) programme and
found the tutors very friendly and patient with me. It was helpful being able to talk
to a Chinese Student Advisor when I needed guidance and advice. I am having a
wonderful time with my homestay family where I’m a big sister to my homestay
family brothers and sisters. My parents visited me from China and they have
enjoyed living in a mixed cultural environment. I am looking forward to completing
my Certificate in English and enrolling into the Bachelor of Business Studies. After
I finish my studies, I want to find a job in Hamilton and stay here as it’s a beautiful
place to live.”
“It was hard to choose a place to study when you’re living in
another country. I checked the course paths online and there was
an impressive array of options available within the School of Media
Arts for me to choose from. Once I arrived at Wintec I received
a considerable amount of support and there was always plenty
of encouragement and freedom to try new things. In my final
A PRACTICAL APPROACH
At Wintec we take a hands-on approach to learning. Using
the latest hospital standard realistic models and props you’ll
carry out simulations of birthing procedures, take recordings,
assess babies and learn how to manage obstectrics procedures.
You’ll also engage in scenario work to practise dealing with
the different situations a midwife can encounter. Wintec’s
experienced, industry qualified tutors are often joined in
workshops by guest speakers such as midwifery educators from
the Waikato District Health Board.
LEARNING ON THE JOB
On this programme you have the opportunity to follow women
through their pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatal care. In
your first year you spend 16 weeks in clinical placements at birth
centres, hospitals and various community agencies working under
the supervision of a registered midwife. In your second year, your
time in clinical placements is 30 weeks. In your third year you will
spend just four weeks in class and the rest of the year on the job
training working alongside registered midwives.
“After training and working as a lawyer in Russia, my company
sent me to New Zealand to learn English. I fell in love with New
Zealand and decided to change my pathway to nursing. I completed
the Certificate in Advanced English (Level 4) and the Certificate
in Introduction to Study (Health) (Level 4) which prepared me
to study the Bachelor of Nursing. The preparation course was
perfect because it covered a range of topics (such as science and
preparation for writing assignments) that were all new for me as a
foreigner. I now work with the elderly in mental health, and I feel
like I am doing something important and making a difference.”
YOUR FUTURE IN HEALTH AND SOCIAL PRACTICE
SOCIAL PRACTICE
Social Practice - Working with individuals, couples, families, groups and communities,
to offer support, to advocate on their behalf and to work towards social change.
Wintec provides you with the knowledge, skills and qualifications you need to make a
positive difference in the lives of people and society.
BACHELOR OF APPLIED SOCIAL SCIENCE
(COUNSELLING OR SOCIAL WORK)
DURATION: Starts February for three years
IELTS: 6.5 in all bands, or equivalent
COUNSELLING
OVERVIEW
Counselling is a challenging yet rewarding career that has a wide
range of employment options. You will learn how to support
people to empower themselves and as a result, your own life will
be enhanced. The Bachelor programme offers firsthand applied
education and development for those who wish to pursue a
professional career in counselling. If you are already working
in the areas of mental health, education or social services, this
programme will give you a formal qualification.
Upon completion of your degree, you’ll have a framework of
practical counselling skills, integrated with a sound theoretical
foundation. When you embark on this programme you need to be
prepared to change – to grow both personally and professionally
as you learn the theory and practice of counselling. This
programme has been designed to meet the requirements for
membership of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors.
HANDS-ON LEARNING
During this applied degree you spend 450 total hours supervised
practicum experience putting into practice what you learn on
campus. While on placement you gain the skills and knowledge
to capably work alongside other professional disciplines which
prepares you to confidently enter the counselling profession
upon graduation.
IN TOUCH WITH THE INDUSTRY
Your tutors are all experienced practitioners qualified in both
counselling practice and teaching. They meet regularly with
counsellors in the community to ensure the programme aligns
with the latest developments out in the field.
SOCIAL WORK
OVERVIEW
There is a shortage of social workers throughout New Zealand
and a social work degree from Wintec will set you on a rewarding
career path in this industry. The programme provides in-depth
knowledge and skills relating to social work practices in
contemporary Aotearoa. It has a collaborative focus, encouraging
people to work in teams and recognise strengths in others.
This three year programme will give you the knowledge, skills,
and attributes required for social work practice in a variety
of settings including schools, hospitals, community groups or
government services. You will also learn how to reflect on your
own perceptions, actions and processes along with the ability to
justify and defend your professional practice.
LEARN BY DOING
Around sixty percent of your learning will be by practical
application supported by a relevant theory base. On campus small
groups and role-playing case studies enable you to get the feel
of real social work situations. Clients will participate in creating
actual scenarios which are videotaped then revised and critiqued
by students and tutors. Placements with a variety of agencies
are part of the curriculum in your second and third year of the
programme. These placements teach you the skills you will need
to work within these organisations.
CHANGING WITH THE INDUSTRY
Feedback through placements and liaising with industry
organisations allows the programme to keep pace with the
ever-changing industry needs and standards. These strong
industry relationships also lead to potential employment for
graduate students.
INDUSTRY SPECIALISTS
Your tutors all have extensive backgrounds in social work as well
as links with community and Government agencies. Throughout
the programme practitioners from different agencies join us in to
provide input on current practice tools and skills which enhance
student learning and knowledge.
