KENZO
Established in 1970 by Kenzo Takada, who had arrived in Paris from Japan
in 1965, KENZO is a singular house that responds to a prevailing uniformity
with eclecticism and poetry. Its appeal corresponds to an audience who
“proclaims their personality, celebrates their differences and affirms
their style” and to a sensual and self-aware individual with a playful, free
spirit; a model incarnated by the timeless messages “Kenzo, the world is
beautiful”.
Riding the counterculture wave, Kenzo Takada unveiled collections that broke
completely with the past, boldly proclaiming that fashion could be at the
same time wildly, colourfully creative and designed for mass consumption.
The precursor of mixing cultures and influences, the brand knew how to
evolve and enrich itself with a new exoticism in the colours of our times for
30 years.
Now under the artistic directorship of Antonio Marras, KENZO has once again
achieved critical and popular acclaim, drawing from the rich KENZO history
while engaging the spirit of the new century. Armed with an unmatched
vocabulary in prints and textiles, Marras mines both East and West, the
present and the past, to create a collection that deftly evokes, reveres, and
reinvents the intentions of its founder.
The first monograph on KENZO, this lavish volume—an art object in and
of itself—features details like the romantic textiles, and pop-ups for which
the house’s fashion collection invitations are known. The monograph will
be available in one deluxe version, with a fabric cover and complete with
a patchwork bag (available in the KENZO flagship stores only) and three
different other fabric covers (available in a selection of bookstores).
About the Contributors
Antonio Marras was appointed designer of KEnzo’s women’s ready-towear
collection in 2003, and in 2008 assumed artistic directorship of the
entire brand.
Bartabas is a renowned equestrian and performer who currently directs
the Academy of Equestrian Arts at Versailles.
Catherine Ormen is a curator and has written several books on fashion.
Olivier Saillard is a curator at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris and
Director of the Galliera Museum, the Paris Fashion Museum and writes on
fashion.
Bradley Quinn is an author and journalist with expertise in fashion,
textiles, and design.
Francesco Bonami is a curator, writer, and critic.
Ryoko Sekiguchi is an award-winning poet who lives and teaches in
Paris.
Tamae Armand-Ejima is the author of the biography of Kenzo Takada.
Patrick Cabasset is editor in chief of French L’Officiel magazine.
