Chemistry is the scientific study of matter and the changes that it
undergoes. Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space.
Therefore, chemists are interested in just about everything! The scope of
chemistry is so broad that this field has traditionally been divided into five
major branches (analytical, biological, inorganic, organic and physical).
During your studies at MVNU, you will have classes in each of those
areas.
Our professors are highly qualified, and they will strive to help you achieve
your personal goals. MVNU’s warm and caring environment creates a
community of believers who are preparing for service to God and
humanity. Whether your interests lie in teaching, research, health care or
government work, our department has something to offer you. Please
consider coming for a visit!
Chemistry is central to all of the other
sciences. You need to study chemistry if you
want to teach biology, chemistry, earth
science or physics at the middle-school, high
school, college or university levels. All of
the states in MVNU’s educational zone
(Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia) currently
report teacher shortages in science and
mathematics.
Our chemistry degree programs at MVNU
will prepare you well to:
Work as a chemist in academic,
government or industrial laboratories;
Adenosine triphosphate,
the high-energy molecule that
powers most biochemical
reactions. Image generated
using ChemBio3D Ultra.
Teach chemistry, earth science and
physical science in grades 7-12;
Enter medical, dental, optometry,
pharmacy, veterinary, and other
health-professional schools; or
Do graduate work in chemistry or a
chemistry-related field such as forensic
science, molecular biology, pharmacology,
toxicology, and many more.
Whether your goal is industry or the
pharmacy, the classroom or the operating
room, MVNU is the place to get started!
MAJORS
Students in Chemistry/Physical Science
may choose one of these programs:
B.S. in Chemistry
Biochemistry/molecular biology/
premedical track
Forensic science track
Graduate school/industry track
B.S. in Physical Science Education
Leads to licensure in teaching
adolescent to young adult (AYA)
programs and meets the requirements
for Ohio and many other states.
It has been estimated that 70% of all
professional careers involve chemistry in
some way. You will need an understanding
in chemistry if you work in:
Agricultural science
