family of William de Cestevile or Cestuill: may represent OFr chastel, chestel
vievil 'old castle' although subsequently associated with ville 'a town'). Особливої
уваги заслуговує ойконім Conyer (раніше мав вигляд Coyner Quay: OFr coigner
'money stamper, coiner' + ME key 'a landing place'), що, таким чином, був етимологічним
гібридом, проте втративши другий елемент назви (ME key), перетворився
на суто лексичне запозичення з французької мови. 71 % (10 л.о.)
представлені етимологічними гібридами: Capel-le-Ferne ('chapel in the ferncovered
land; ME, Old North French (далі ONFr) capel + French en + Fr definite
article le + Old Kentish *ferne 'area growing with ferns'), Sutton Valence ('south
farm/settlement held by the Valence family' :OE suth 'south' + OE tun 'farm/
settlement' + French manorial addition, from the Valence family (13 th century)).
Ойконіми New Hythe ('the new landing place': French definite article la + ME
niwe, newe + hethe (OE hyth) та Seal ('the hall': French definite article la + OE
sele) в своїх перших формах, як бачимо у етимологічному тлумаченні, мали у
своєму складі французький означений артикль "la", відсутній у сучасних
формах назв.
В графстві Оксфордшир назви населених пунктів з французьким елементом
у складі займають 7,2% (28 одиниць з 386). Лексичне запозичення
наявне лише в одному ойконімі – Cane End ('the canon's end' OFr canoun +
ende), що складає 3,5 %. Основну кількість (96,5 %) становлять знову ж
таки етимологічні гібриди, для прикладу: Aston Rowant ('Aston ('east

('Sibford held by the Ferrers family': OE pers.n. Sibba + ford 'Sibba's ford' +
manorial addition from the family name of Robert de Ferrers, second earl of
Derby). Важливо відзначити ойконім Leafield ('the field' OFr definite article la
+ OE feld), в якому, як бачимо у сучасному вигляді, зберігся елемент французької
мови (означений артикль).
Велика кількість населених пунктів, в назві яких прослідковується елемент
французької мови, присутня в графстві Сомерсет. Так, з загальної
кількості ойконімів (573) такі одиниці займають 8 % (46), з яких 2% (1 одиниця)
представлені лексичним запозиченням Montacute ('pointed hill': OFr
mont + agu). Всі інші назви (98 % або ж 45 лексичних одиниць) є етимологічними
гібридами, наприклад: Ashbrittle ('Bretel's ash' OE sc + OFr Bret 'a
Breton'), Cricket Saint Thomas ('St Thomas's C' Primitive Welsh *crug 'hill' +
OFr diminutive suffix -ette + saint's name Thomas from the dedication to the
church), Sampford Arundel ('Sampford held by the Arundel family': OE sand +
ford 'sandy ford' + Roger Arundel ('swallow' from OFr arondel) who held the
manor in 1086).
