Season of Giving - Zurich Airport Season of Giving - Zurich Airport

Once the days become shorter and the temperatures dip, the winter service at Zurich Airport springs into action. Supervised by Flughafen Zürich AG and the Airfield Maintenance division, the winter service employs over 140 personnel. The division is headed by Hanspeter Moll, an authorised officer and engineer, who has been working at the airport for 22 years. For seven of those years he has been Head of Airfield Maintenance and owner of all airfield infrastructure, which has a current replacement value of around CHF 3.5 billion. This means he is in charge of all structural and operational duties (runways, taxiways, docking areas, lights, roads, car parks, green areas, underground structures, cleaning, etc.) within the boundaries of the airport, which encompass over 800 ha. «My work is heavily influenced by seasonal changes,» explains Mr. Moll. This means that no two days are the same and that his work is shaped by irregularities. Nevertheless, he explains that it is precisely this change and variety that makes his job interesting. Work in the winter in particular revolves around unforeseeable factors.
For a period of about five months a team of over 350 people is on constant standby, ready to ensure that airport’s high standards are maintained even in the most adverse conditions. Clearing snow using a host of specialised machinery including snow blowers, and keeping surfaces free of ice rank among the key tasks of the winter service. «This kind of work comes with great responsibility, since the fundamental duty of Airfield Maintenance is to ensure the availability of the airport, as well as the safety of the airplanes at all times,» says Mr. Moll about his demanding profession. In a committee with Skyguide, meteorological services, Swissport, and the airlines, the airport decides throughout the day which of the different groups is deployed given the prevailing conditions. To get all relevant areas in working order on time, it is usually decided at 2 a.m. which service teams will be deployed. «In the eyes of the public, weather has become less of a factor and the winters milder over the last few years», says Mr. Moll. Yet the exact opposite has come about: «Short snow storms and their intensity have become significantly more severe, which tests both man and machine to the very limits.» Despite these conditions, however, Zurich Airport has to this day never been closed due to snowfall thanks to the tireless efforts of Airfield Maintenance. portrait winter 2009/2010 35
