When the first flakes glitter down from the sky,
blanketing the Swiss mountains with a layer of frosted
snow, the hearts of winter sport enthusiasts everywhere
begin to beat a bit louder. In order to ensure a smooth
connection for passengers flying in from near and far
to their favourite slopes, Zurich Airport offers direct
shuttle bus services to Davos and Laax. Every Saturday,
the Davos Express shuttles passengers to the famous
health resort. Departing every Thursday, Saturday and
Sunday, the Airport Shuttle Laax ferries travellers to this
snowboarding paradise.
Along with the many slopes for skiing, snowboarding
and cross-country skiing, Davos also offers to fulfil a
childhood dream for many of its visitors: a night in a
romantic igloo village. Located 2,620 metres above sea
level and only a ten-minute walk from the panoramic
restaurant Weissfluhjoch, Iglu-Dorf GmbH has built a
village of comfortable mini-hotels made of snow. With
walls one to two metres thick, each igloo maintains a
pleasant room temperature despite minus 30-degree
weather. After «checking in» to the igloo palace, guests
are greeted with hot mulled wine at the cosy snow bar,
followed by an authentic Swiss cheese fondue dinner.
Featuring a high romance factor ideal for couples, the
Romantic Igloos are furnished with a master bed made of
snow, upon which thermal mats, mattresses, sheep furs,
and heart-shaped pillows create a cuddly atmosphere.
Also noteworthy, the Romantic Igloo Plus comes with
a private bathroom, while the Romantic Igloo Suite
provides curious guests free access to a private whirlpool
under the open skies of the Grisons mountains. Exposed
to the heavens, guests can literally reach for the stars
from the whirlpool igloo.
A few valleys further down, entrepreneurs at Laax have
also been inspired by the region’s natural beauty. In
November, «rocksresort», a «Member of Design Hotels»,
opened its doors offering premium apartments just next
to the slopes. Made of Valais quartzite, the seven square
buildings reflect the geological shifts in Flims, which have
