War es schwierig, neun Jahre durchzuhalten?
Ich war felsenfest davon überzeugt, dass «Cargo» gelingen
würde. Aber der Preis war hoch: Ich wurde krank, verlor
10 Kilogramm Gewicht, und zwei Beziehungen gingen in
die Brüche. Zudem hatte ich mein ganzes Vermögen von
200’000 Franken in das Projekt investiert. Schon alleine
deshalb musste der Film Erfolg haben!
Wie verliefen die Dreharbeiten?
Um die Kosten tief zu halten, war alles minutiös geplant.
Die Dreh-Crew war nur gerade zwei Monate im Einsatz.
Wir drehten im früheren Sulzer-Rechenzentrum auf zwei
Ebenen: Während wir oben drehten, wurde unten für die
nächste Szene umgebaut. Oft kam ich erst um vier Uhr
morgens ins Bett und um sechs Uhr früh ging es wieder
weiter. Eine stressige Zeit und eine schier übermenschliche
Belastung. Mein Körper hat denn auch gehörig rebelliert.
Wie erlebten Sie die Premiere am 24. September?
Als Wechselbad der Gefühle: Stolz, Erleichterung, Freude.
Teilweise habe ich fast geweint vor Glück, teilweise habe
ich mich geärgert, denn ich hätte einiges noch besser machen
wollen.
Wie war die Reaktion am Filmfestival in Sitges?
Äusserst positiv. Durch die Filmfestival-Teilnahme konnte
ich zahlreiche internationale Kontakte knüpfen. Geplant
sind Teilnahmen an weiteren Genre-Festivals: So haben
wir «Cargo» beim Sundance Film Festival in den USA
eingereicht und hoffen sehr, ihn dort zeigen zu können.
Was it hard hanging on for nine years?
I was completely convinced that «Cargo» would be
successful. Though I had to pay a high price. I became
ill, lost ten kilograms and had two failed relationships.
In addition I also invested all my savings, 200,000
francs, in the project. Just for that, the film needed to
be a success.
How was shooting the film?
Everything was planned meticulously in order to keep
our expenses low. The film crew was shooting for only
two months straight. Our studio, located in a former
data processing facility, had two floors. While filming
upstairs, the lower floor was prepared for the next scenes
and vice versa. It was common for me to go to sleep at
4 a.m. and wake up at 6 a.m. It was a stressful time, a
Herculean effort, and physically very demanding.
What were you feeling during the premiere?
Pride, relief and happiness, a whole mix of emotions. At
some moments I almost cried with joy, while at other
moments I became angry because I wanted to improve a
few more things.
How was the reaction at the Film Festival in Sitges?
Extremely positive. I was able to make many international
contacts at the festival. So we plan to participate in
other genre festivals. We also submitted «Cargo» to the
Sundance Film Festival in the USA and we really hope
that we will get a screening there.
