Mit einem Budget von nur
fünf Millionen Franken realisierte
der Winterthurer
Filmregisseur Ivan Engler (38) zusammen
mit Produzent Marcel Wolfisberg
den spektakulären ersten Schweizer
Sciencefiction-Thriller «Cargo». Nun
klopft Hollywood an die Tür des
Shooting Stars.
Hat Sie Sciencefiction schon immer
fasziniert?
Und wie! Ich wuchs in einem Haus mit
gespenstischem Estrich auf. Dort gab ein
altes Radio unheimliche Geräusche von
sich. Ich stellte mir vor, dies seien Funksignale
von Raumschiffen aus dem All.
Waren Sie als Kind fantasievoll?
Einmal gingen wir im Morgendunst an
der Thur spazieren, als ich plötzlich zwei
Sonnen am Himmel erblickte. Meine
Mutter erklärte mir, dass ich die Sonne
und den Vollmond gleichzeitig sah. Solche
Erlebnisse waren Schlüsselmomente,
die meine Weltall-Fantasie anregten.
Zuerst absolvierten Sie aber ein bodenständiges
Studium.
Ich studierte in Zürich zwei Semester
Biologie und später Medizin, weil mich
die Schnittstellen zwischen Mensch und
Maschine faszinieren. Eine Karriere als
Wissenschaftler wäre für mich jedoch
unvorstellbar, weil meine Fantasie zu
kurz kommen würde. Deshalb wechselte
ich zur Hochschule für Gestaltung und
Kunst.
Weshalb verstrichen neun Jahre, bis
Ihr Erstling «Cargo» Premiere feierte?
Nach der Schule musste ich immer wieder
arbeiten, um Geld zu verdienen. Ich
drehte Videoclips und Werbefilme, zog
als VJ und DJ durch die Partyszene und
arbeitete mit Bands zusammen.
Wie haben Sie den Film finanziert?
Die Kapitalbeschaffung verlief anfangs
harzig. Der Film-Kulturchef Nicolas Bideau
und die Zürcher Filmstiftung fanden
unser Projekt aber gelungen. Auch
Privatfirmen wie Technologiebetriebe
identifizierten sich mit den Futurologie-
und Umweltproblemen im Film.
So kamen fast fünf Millionen Franken
zusammen.

film director Ivan Engler
(38) directed the first and truly
spectacular Swiss science fiction
film «Cargo», along with producer
Marcel Wolfisberg. Now Hollywood
is knocking on the door of this Swiss
shooting star.
Have you always been fascinated
with science fiction?
Very much so! In my childhood, I spent
a lot of time in our creepy attic, listening
to weird squeaking sounds from my old
radio receiver. I assumed that they were
signals from outer space.
Were you imaginative as a child?
Once while walking through the
morning mist along a river, I suddenly
noticed two suns in the sky. My mother
explained to me that I only saw the sun
and the full moon at the same time.
Such moments were key in sparking my
fascination with outer space.
But first you completed your studies
here on Earth?
At the University of Zurich I studied
biology for two semesters followed by
medicine. The interactive relationship
between man and machine fascinated
me. But I could not imagine a career
as a scientist since it would not nurture
my imagination enough. That is why
I transferred to the school for Art and
Design.
Why did it take nine years to premiere
your first movie «Cargo»?
After I finished film school I had to
make a living. So I directed music
videos and commercials and worked in
the party scene as a VJ and DJ. I also
collaborated with a few bands.
How did you finance the film?
It was difficult obtaining funding.
But the Swiss director of Film and
Culture, Nicolas Bideau and the
Zurich Film Foundation liked our
project. In addition, technology firms
identified with the futuristic look and
environmental problems portrayed in
the film. That’s how we collected five
million francs.
