Foreword<br />

The ability of the public sec<strong>to</strong>r <strong>to</strong> deliver quality services is dependent on its people. Our workforce, in line with the rest of Australia’s, is ageing.<br />

The current WA public sec<strong>to</strong>r workforce has <strong>an</strong> average age of 45 years, with over 19% of employees aged 55 years or older i . These employees<br />

hold a wealth of skill <strong>an</strong>d experience. If the majority of these people were <strong>to</strong> leave the sec<strong>to</strong>r within the next five years, the knowledge <strong>an</strong>d labour<br />

loss would be subst<strong>an</strong>tial.<br />

An age diverse workforce has real benefits for <strong>an</strong>y org<strong>an</strong>isation. The ability <strong>to</strong> harness the skills, experience <strong>an</strong>d enthusiasm of people of <strong>an</strong>y age<br />

creates a cooperative work environment where the individuals, regardless of their age, c<strong>an</strong> contribute.<br />

The age profile of the WA public sec<strong>to</strong>r highlights the need <strong>to</strong> develop effective strategies <strong>to</strong> retain mature-aged employees in the labour market<br />

while a more diverse profile is constructed. The knowledge <strong>an</strong>d experience of mature workers should be captured <strong>to</strong> develop newer employees <strong>to</strong><br />

ensure service excellence continues in the Western Australi<strong>an</strong> community. This guide is designed <strong>to</strong> assist senior m<strong>an</strong>agers <strong>an</strong>d Hum<strong>an</strong> Resource<br />

(HR) practitioners <strong>to</strong> achieve these goals.<br />
