Implementation<br />

Pilot schemes <strong>an</strong>d trial periods c<strong>an</strong> be used <strong>to</strong> implement strategies on a smaller scale <strong>to</strong> test how they work,<br />

<strong>an</strong>d <strong>to</strong> identify <strong>an</strong>d rectify <strong>an</strong>y problems that may arise before a large scale rollout. A fixed end date for the<br />

trial/pilot should be agreed, <strong>an</strong>d a review undertaken <strong>to</strong> determine its success.<br />

For successful implementation consider the following points:<br />

• ensure m<strong>an</strong>agement support for the initiatives. This will show that the strategy is import<strong>an</strong>t <strong>to</strong> the agency.<br />

• ensure staff communication explains what is happening <strong>an</strong>d why, how it will affect staff <strong>an</strong>d the benefits<br />

for them <strong>an</strong>d the agency.<br />

• ensure departments/officers are aware of their responsibilities. It must be clear who is responsible for<br />

what.<br />

• ensure perform<strong>an</strong>ce indica<strong>to</strong>rs are determined prior <strong>to</strong> implementation <strong>an</strong>d that baseline information is<br />

collected as a basis for comparison.<br />

• ensure sufficient resources are allocated<br />

• ensure employees know who <strong>to</strong> go <strong>to</strong> for information <strong>an</strong>d that feedback mech<strong>an</strong>isms are in place<br />

To determine success perform<strong>an</strong>ce indica<strong>to</strong>rs should be measured at least <strong>an</strong>nually. Possible indica<strong>to</strong>rs<br />

could be:<br />

• employee retention rates<br />

• rates of absenteeism<br />

• take up of age-inclusive programs amongst employees<br />

• take up of learning <strong>an</strong>d development opportunities<br />

• increased diversity in age r<strong>an</strong>ge of c<strong>an</strong>didates<br />

• increased diversity in age r<strong>an</strong>ge of new employees.<br />
