<strong>an</strong>d society as a whole. Illness <strong>an</strong>d absence from work increases pressure on families <strong>an</strong>d colleagues <strong>an</strong>d<br />

is a signific<strong>an</strong>t cost <strong>to</strong> agencies <strong>an</strong>d the economy.<br />

Health <strong>an</strong>d ageing<br />

Extensive research has concluded that chronological age is only a rough indica<strong>to</strong>r of health or perform<strong>an</strong>ce<br />

capacity xxiii , in fact those over 45 years of age take fewer sick days xxiv <strong>an</strong>d experience less work related<br />

injuries xxv th<strong>an</strong> younger employees.<br />
