1. Ways <strong>to</strong> reward <strong>an</strong>d recognise employees<br />

The <strong>Public</strong> Service Medal recognises outst<strong>an</strong>ding service by<br />

employees of the Australi<strong>an</strong> Government <strong>an</strong>d state, terri<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>an</strong>d local<br />

government employees. A <strong>to</strong>tal of 100 medals are awarded every<br />

year, six are awarded by the WA state government. A person may<br />

only receive the <strong>Public</strong> Service Medal once <strong>an</strong>d is entitled <strong>to</strong> the postnominal<br />

Honour<br />

Annual agency awards are a way <strong>to</strong> recognise exceptional employee<br />

perform<strong>an</strong>ce. The awards may also encourage staff loyalty,<br />

commitment <strong>an</strong>d productivity.<br />

Praise <strong>an</strong>d recognition c<strong>an</strong> be shown at br<strong>an</strong>ch meetings, in agency<br />

newsletters, on the intr<strong>an</strong>et, as <strong>an</strong> employee of the month, via a<br />

letter or Certificate of Appreciation or by simply giving verbal th<strong>an</strong>ks.<br />

Some people find a one on one conversation with their m<strong>an</strong>ager more<br />

me<strong>an</strong>ingful th<strong>an</strong> public recognition.<br />

Employees may have concerns about the impact of work on<br />

super<strong>an</strong>nuation benefits or concerns over access <strong>to</strong> benefits while<br />

continuing <strong>to</strong> work. Fin<strong>an</strong>cial pl<strong>an</strong>ning services <strong>an</strong>d retirement advice<br />

could be provided <strong>to</strong> increase awareness <strong>an</strong>d show empathy.<br />

Flexible work practices <strong>an</strong>d health <strong>an</strong>d well being programs<br />

demonstrate that employees are valued. See sections 3.5 <strong>an</strong>d 3.6 for<br />

further information.<br />

This could be secondments, acting opportunities, additional training,<br />

access <strong>to</strong> seminars; opportunities <strong>to</strong> men<strong>to</strong>r newer staff or job rotate<br />

<strong>to</strong> add variety.<br />

Dual benefits of men<strong>to</strong>ring<br />

Western Australia Police has recently<br />

reviewed its well-established<br />

men<strong>to</strong>ring program in order <strong>to</strong> more<br />

fully underst<strong>an</strong>d the benefits gained<br />

<strong>an</strong>d ensure return on investment. The<br />

future direction of the program<br />

focuses on self-m<strong>an</strong>agement <strong>an</strong>d<br />

access <strong>to</strong> resources <strong>an</strong>d <strong>to</strong>ols <strong>to</strong><br />

support individuals taking control of<br />

their development across the agency.<br />
