Award. As consciousness for the environment
grows day by day, environmentally
managed hotels are receiving
more and more interest. Tourism is one
of the most consuming service sectors.
So, with the motto “Conservation
& Use”, the hospitality sector should be
the leader of sustainability in tourism
and environment. The Greening Hotels
project is a way to improve awareness
of both hoteliers and their guests (consumers)
to this with hotel managements
taking precautions and measures and
guests earning new habits and trends.
The Greening Hotels project aims to
improve energy saving in all areas of
hotels from the substructure up to the
staff management. Minimum energy
wastage without compromising service
quality and guest satisfaction are the
main concerns. These include the use
of the latest A+ energy-saving technologies,
employing of environmentally
friendly materials in hotel rooms and
common areas and educating employees
in environment consciousness in
order to apply new practices to both
offices and guest services.
With this project a 100-room hotel
saves the following in one year: 500kg
in consumption of detergent and a
500-tonne decrease in the consumption
of water. Use of re-fill products
prevents the consumption of 12,500
pvc bottles and 2.5 tonnes of soap.
TUROB transferred 1000kg of paper
and 50,000 pieces of waste package
to recycling institutions and collected
1200 batteries. (TUROB members in
İstanbul collected 100,000 batteries
in just two years.) The project induces
the hotel and its management to
become environmentally friendly and
changes the attitudes of staff and
guests. So it begins with the hotel but
impacts on the trends of the users in
all areas and also makes tourism more
sustainable – one of the most important
sectors economically and peripherally.
Green Venue and
Accommodation
İstanbul CVB supports green initiatives,
in order to maintain that the
city of İstanbul can easily and quickly
move forward on the corporate social
responsibility front. Several meeting
venues in İstanbul lead a variety of
initiatives that create a natural environment,
reduce energy usage and
use minimal non-renewable resources.
Some of these initiatives are:
• Maximum natural light
• Heat insulation
• “Energy Smart Lighting” within venues
such as LED lightening system that
provides energy savings and efficiency
• Water purification system enabling
consumption of pipe water
• Environmentally-friendly technologies
• Congress facilities located in the city
center offer delegates the opportunity
of walking
• Easily accessible public transportation
• Recycling bins for papers, plastics,
glasses placed within the venues
• Several venues employ a system for
distilling waste oils in the kitchens
• Recycling pens are being used at the
meeting rooms
• Smoking is banned in all closed public
spaces within the venues
İstanbul has many four and five
stars-hotels and meeting venues that
acquire different certificates highlighting
their environment friendly practices
and technologies.
In addition to all these important notes;
meeting planners, congress organizers,
corporations and associations
can help promoting green efforts in
İstanbul by contributing to reforestation
and other environmental cleaning
projects led by NGOs. Venues and
hotels in İstanbul predominantly use
the food that is produced in locally
in İstanbul and Turkey. Therefore this
measure adds more sustainability to
the environment by decreasing transportation.
