#16 Discover the City of İstanbul A green city with sustainable projects As the host of the 5th World Water Forum in 2009, İstanbul put environmental concerns at the forefront of its agenda. Incentives, sustainability in the meetings, events and the conference industry in general have become a key issue for meeting planners, national associations and corporations in the city.
Discover the City of İstanbul İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) is one of the major authorities that give high importance to sustainable environment. As for the air pollution measurements, IBB set up an online system that evaluates the pollution of different zones of İstanbul every day. Not only İBB authorities but also every citizen can check their neighborhood’s pollution values. This enables the authorities to take preemptive solutions. Since İstanbul is a city of seas, water pollution is inspected from the sea and also by helicopters. İBB also has an online system and a call center for the waste oils where the assigned people go to İstanbul residents’ home and pick up the wastes. Public Transportation: Carrying out the operation of such urban rail lines as the metro, tramway and cable car for one of the leading cities of the world, İBB Transportation Department provides modern, reliable and comfortable public transportation to 1.5 million passengers on its 10 different routes of 141 km in total. The company has proven its commitment by signing the Sustainable Development Statement of the International Association of Public Transport. ‘Metrobüs’; busses with special lines that started giving service in 2007 has many advantages in terms of sustainability. According to a report that is published by EMBARQ Center for Sustainable Transport in İstanbul, Metrobüs system has reduced the bus management costs by 23% and has supplied 9% in road safety. The report also mentions reduction on travel durations by 64%. As İstanbul is divided by Bosphorus, İBB Maritimes Department continues to be the preferred transportation alternative for urban marine transportation. İBB Maritimes carried almost 53 million passengers and made 225,000 trips in 2013. İstanbul’s 515km coastline (shore, beaches, ports and walking lanes) are cleaned up by 36 mobile teams made up of 24 permanent with 12 temporary teams for the summer period. In addition to this, the surface of the water is cleaned by 8 boats which have been specially produced for İstanbul. İstanbul is also developing its bicycle lanes in the recent years. With 36 kilometers of bicycle lanes – 18 on the European and 18 on the Asian side – İstanbul visitors can ride their own bikes and also rent bicycles along their travel. Moreover, plastic wastes are recycled and organic waste is re-used as compost in various parks and gardens around İstanbul. 20,000 tonnes of soil improver is produced annually.
