Art and culture are between the crucial elements of what makes a city valuable. The number of galleries, exhibitions, cultural events, the value given to an artist leverages the city’s quality and respect. İstanbul’s cultural diversity makes the city country’s cultural and artistic capital. The İstanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) acts as one of the locomotives in organizing prominent film, theater, music and jazz festivals as well as two biennials and special one-off cultural and artistic events throughout the year. Since 1973, İstanbul Music Festival has welcomed world stars of classical music including the Vienna Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Itzhak Perlman, Gidon Kremer, Hilary Hahn, Zubin Mehta, İdil Biret, and Fazıl Say. Chick Corea, Keith Jarret, Herbie Hancock, Diana Krall, Ornette Coleman, Tony Bennett, Eric Clapton, Lou Reed, Nick Cave, Paul Simon, Sting, Elvis Costello and Bryan Ferry are among the legendary musicians İstanbul Jazz Festival featured in the last 20 years. The festivals of İKSV in 2015 include the İstanbul Film Festival between 4-19 April, İstanbul Music Festival between 31 May-29 June and İstanbul Jazz Festival between 30 June-15 July. Also this year, between 5 September and 1 November, the 14th İstanbul Biennial will be held. The festival programs may be followed through the Foundation’s website at www.iksv.org. While April is the time for “International İstanbul Film Festival”, October hosts “Filmekimi” and February features “!f İstanbul” festivals. If live music makes your heart beat İstanbul is the city where festivals in the summer bring world famous singers and not only Turkish but also thousands of listeners from neighbouring countries attend. Santral İstanbul, Salon IKSV, Babylon, Garaj İstanbul, Harbiye Cemil Topuzlu Center feature talented and valuable musicians from various music types throughout the year. Akbank Jazz Festival is one of the major festivals that bring together renowned musicians in İstanbul. İstanbul also hosts many more festivals where different types of concepts embrace the city. Tulip Festival displays the symbol of İstanbul while Shopping Festival every June is an attraction for shopping lovers from all over the world.
