The Pre-Young Scholars
Induction Class of 2010 has
a long way to reach high
school graduation in 2016.
They’re an extremely
bright group representing
10 Columbus City Schools.
During Autumn Quarter
they spent some time
writing about various
topics including personal
introductions and goals.
Read on to learn more
about them.
Fresh & New
By Elisha McCarty
We are brand spanking
new to you & our families
too.
Singled out 20 or less at
first it was a mess.
Given a scholarship to
work for here to achieve
our dream, but it’s far
away it seems.
We have to keep above a
3.0.
In reality this is a race to
the finish line. We will try
our best, for it’s the path
straight to success; In our
brain it’s our favorite
game, Even if you disagree
with me.
We are still brand
spanking new to us & you
& maybe our families too!
Writing by Emmanuel “Manny” Kankam
Ridgeview Middle School is very important to me. It is a
school focused on achievement of goals, and also what you
stand for. The staff of Ridgeview is what makes you
successful. Without the staff most people would not do
what they have done.
Last year was my first year attending Ridgeview. I
learned new things. I needed to be organized and
prepared. I also had to be focused and respectful. I made
new friends that year. I could talk to them and look out
for them. I had to choose the right group of friends that I
knew wouldn’t alter me or get me in any kind of trouble.
This year I have to carry on with what I learned in the
last. I have made mistakes and I learned my lessons. I
try to do my best as well as making sure my peers do. I
try to lead them to the right path, and those who choose
to follow, I believe will be even more successful than those
who choose not to. I am positive you can do what you
want to, as long as you know you can.
Writing by Polly Sy
I got here because of my
family's courage, how they
pushed me on to get good
grades, and how they helped
me through hard times to
receive a good education. My
friends joy helped me as well
because they helped me create
my inner self. I am nothing
without my friends and family.
Lastly my school counselor
who helped me get into the
Pre-Young Scholars Program.
My school’s hope, my friends
joy, my family’s courage, and
my motto: “Things happen”
got me sitting here in this
room with future scholars, and
I am one of them.

Introducing The Class of 2016 Continued from page 1
Writing by Leslie Jones
We are the graduating class of 2016. We are also the new class of the
Young Scholars Program. My name is Leslie Jones. I go to Sherwood Middle
School and I am in the 7th grade. The Young Scholars Program will
help me be a graduate of The Ohio State University. If I put forth my best
effort I will get a scholarship to OSU.
My aunt who is a big part of my life is a graduate of Young Scholars and
OSU. She lives in St. Paul Minnesota. She was a former city planner and
now she is a government relations officer, also known as a lobbyist. She is
a very successful black woman. I want to be just like her one day, but I
want to be a successful lawyer. After graduating from OSU I hope to move
on to Harvard University.
Writing by William Chatman
Writing by Mya Fair
Young Scholars can do a whole lot for me in the
future. Young Scholars can make me be
somebody. I would like to thank my guidance
counselor for selecting me to apply for this
program. In this program I can become anybody
I want to be in the future. I would like to
be a professional orchestra player and a
pediatrician.
I want to thank my favorite teacher
Mrs. Roth for nominating me. I really
want to repay her for this. I can do
that by staying in this program and
doing my best.
I am an honor roll student who is
willing to learn. I am averaging a 3.5.
My goal is to get a 4.0. This goal is
not hard to accomplish if you work
hard.
Writing by Trishaya “Shay” Spain-Austin
The Pre-Young Scholars Program at The Ohio State University is a program
that you get nominated for by your teacher. You must be a first generation
college student. You have to keep a 3.0 but we’re striving for a 3.5 G.P.A. or
above. I’m in YSP with my best friend Shaye Murray. We encourage each
other to keep our grades up and stay focused. This is something that you
really have to want. It’s a great opportunity for me and everyone else here.
One day I’ll be a Buckeye. GO BUCKS!
Writing by Jada Battin
We’d like to thank all of our teachers for nominating us
to take part in the program. Our teachers, parents,
friends, and families are the people who will help us
through this journey to college. The Young Scholars
Program will be a great life experience for us.
Writing by Dionne “Shaye” Murray
When I found out I was chosen to be a Pre-Young Scholar I was very excited and nervous. My best friend Shay Spain-Austin
was also chosen. We both knew that we had to encourage each other to do a good job in this program and keep our grades up.
This is a great chance for me to go to college and be a BUCKEYE.
When I’m not busy I like to read. The books I have read are by an amazing author named Sharon M. Draper. They are:
Tears of a Tiger, Forged by Fire, Darkness Before Dawn, and The Battle of Jericho.
I hope that I do very well in this program. My parents, teachers, and friends encourage me to do my best and to strive for
excellence.

Writing by Brianna Waderker
Hi! My name is Brianna Waderker and I am a 7th grade student at Arts Impact Middle School (A.I.M.S.). My language arts
teacher, Mrs. Cheryl Copeland nominated me for the Young Scholars Program. My favorite subject in school is math. I am
taking pre-algebra. Another subject I like is english literature and composition. I am a member of my schools soccer and
basketball teams. I am also planning to run track for my school in the spring. Since A.I.M.S. does not have a softball team I
will play at a recreation center in the summer.
So far I have really enjoyed being in the Young Scholars Program. My future plans are to graduate from The Ohio State
University and fulfill my goal of becoming a psychologist.

I’ve Made it This Far
By Honey Peaks
Yes me, Honey Peaks has made it this much closer to getting into college.
But lets rewind, I’ve made it this far due to my attitude and grades. Also
from the help of my favorite teacher Ms. Volz.
Many of my peers look up to me for my success and positive attitude.
Others look down and frown upon me because they envy the fact that I
have done what I hade to do to be selected for opportunities like the Young
Scholars Program.
All kids can be successful if they focus and are determined to do something
with their lives.
Hilltonia: My School
By Tavian Pack
The teachers at Hilltonia are outstanding. Most of them would stay an extra hour after school just to help you with one math
problem. I have grown to love a teacher at Hilltonia named Ms. Volz. Me and a couple of other students call her “Mommy” or
“Mommy V”. She is very close to us.
There are 4 students from Hilltonia in the Young Scholars Program. Many other students from my school have the potential
and togetherness to be here. I believe everyone should have an equal opportunity regardless of where they grew up because
the students at Hilltonia are very bright, but we don’t always get a chance to show it.
Writing by Nyesha Newsom
My goals are very short and simple, I want to finish all grades with at least a 3.5
grade point average. When I get to college I want to study in the medical field so that
I can become a pediatrician. I want to help others and cure diseases. In college I will
also study in the field of law. If being a pediatrician doesn’t work out I want to be a
lawyer. I think that it would be a good job for me because I can put up a good
argument to benefit myself and others.
Writing by Thomas Hennen
My goals are to maintain my
grades so I can stay in the
Young Scholars Program. If I do
this I will earn a scholarship to
OSU. When I go to college I
want to study computer science.

A Review of Death Note
By John Kenish
Death Note is about a battle between Light & L. In the first episode of Death Note
the main character named Light Yagami finds a notebook on the ground outside
of his school with the words Death Note written on the front. He opens it and
reads the instructions, then thinking that it is a joke takes it home. At home he
writes down the name of a criminal as a test. When he discovers that the notebook
actually works he starts writing down the names of more criminals. Five
days later Ryuk, the shinigami who dropped the notebook finds Light and appears
in his room. Ryuk agrees to let Light keep the notebook but warns Light that the
only emotions he will feel are pain and fear. A few days later the best detective in
the world, named L finds out about Light’s actions and nicknames him Kira for
killer. Without knowing that Light is Kira, L suspects Light due to his high IQ.
Light feels pressured and tries to kill L but can’t due to not knowing his name.
Light joins L in the chase which results in mind battles between them which
eventually leads to the defeat of one of them.
Storyline: The storyline of Death Note is great and original so I give it a 10 out of 10.
Music: The music in Death Note is all original and captures the mood except for the second opening so I give it a 9 out of 10.
Artwork: The art in Death Note captures the dark mood without making it hard to watch for a long time so I give the artwork a 10
out of 10.
Voice: The voices of all of the characters fit exactly except for Misa who has a very high pitched voice and refers to herself in third
person so I give the voice work a 9 out of 10.
Overall: The overall rating for Death Note is 9.5 out of 10 and I highly recommend this to anybody who likes action or has extra
time.
Writing by Uriah Anang
I do many things in my spare time that are fun to me. First off I like to sing
and rap. Second I love to play guitar and learn things about it. Lastly I play
3 different sports: soccer, basketball, and football. These are all of the
things I like to do in my spare time.
I like to sing and rap songs I write and songs by my favorite artists Drake,
Lil Wayne and many more. I love to sing and rap for two reasons. The first
reason is that rap is a cool way to express yourself and you can tell a lot
about a person through rap. Secondly singing is pretty cool because it goes
with the guitar and I like to sing while I play.
I’ve been playing the guitar for about two years and I’ve learned so much. I
like learning new songs and different types of musical styles on the guitar. I
can do almost anything music wise on that instrument. Also when I play
guitar it really brings out my calm and peaceful side. I have two guitars.
The electric one is black and I have an acoustic guitar that is yellowish with
red sides.
Lastly in my spare time I play sports. The first sport I play is soccer. I have played since I was 6. The next sport I play is football.
I don’t play on a team yet, but I play with my family and friends and am really good. The last sport I like to play is basketball because
it’s just fun. This year I was finally old enough to play on the school team. I made it to the final tryouts but did not make
the team. Still playing sports is something I love and that I will never stop doing.
Thanks for reading about the things I like to do in my spare time.
