Discrimination Training Alternatives
DVD Modules 1, 2 & 3
This set is a must for any professional
or personal resource library. Picture
discrimination is necessary to increase
independence in any environment. This
DVD series provides instructors and parents
with a valuable tool to achieve this
goal! Phase III of PECS teaches picture
discrimination within a functional, reinforcing
context. These modules target
alternative discrimination strategies to
utilize if your learner has not mastered
Phase IIIA. The series reviews the teaching
protocol for Phase IIIA and the 4-step
error correction procedure. Throughout the DVDs, instructors and parents will learn alternative
strategies that are easy to implement and require very little preparation. We discuss and
demonstrate three “orientation” strategies to help learners who are not looking at the pictures,
provide examples of ways to visually modify the symbols, and discuss successful strategies for
visually impaired individuals.
by Beth Sulzer-Azaroff, Ph.D., Richard K. Fleming, Ph.D.
Books
If your son or daughter is over-stimulated by noisy
places or has trouble communicating or interacting
with people, then everyday activities like going to the
playground or helping out with household chores may
seem outside your child’s repertoire. Authors Bondy
and Frost, the founders of the award-winning Pyramid
Approach to educating individuals with autism, show
how it is possible to keep family life running smoothly
and teach an individual with autism to participate in
important and routine family activities at home and
in the neighborhood. Their teaching strategies can be
used during the course of everyday life without making
too many adjustments or converting your home into a
school.
In a reassuring, easy-to-read style, Autism 24/7 encourages
parents to pinpoint times when their child’s
behavior or lack of skills seems to interfere with family
functioning. This step helps identify what to teach your
child and what goals to set.
Verbal Behavior
Empower! Book and CD
Verbal Behavior
by B.F. Skinner, 1958, Soft Cover, 478 pages.
EMPOWER! Book and CD by Beth A, Soeder, M.A., CCC-SLP
and Catharine M. Critz, Ph.D., CPNP, 2003, 166 pages.
Books
This book laid the foundation for the development of the
PECS training protocol. The book presents a systematic
functional analysis of language based on the principles
of learning. Skinner proposes that verbal behavior
requires an analysis separate from other behavior because
it does not operate on the environment directly, but
rather through other people in a verbal community. He
describes several parts of communication defined by their
relationship to specific antecedents and consequences,
from the simplest features of language to its most
complicated aspects. He also stresses that verbal behavior
is defined by its function, not by its form- thus, for example,
PECS permits any user to engage in verbal behavior.
A Picture’s Worth: PECS and Other Visual Communication
Strategies in Autism by Andy Bondy, Ph.D., and Lori Frost, M.S.,
CCC-SLP, 2002, 150 pages, 25 photos.
Welcome to School
Written by our very own Andy Bondy and Lori Frost, this
book examines the value of nonverbal communication
strategies for individuals with autism, and describes
the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS).
After a thorough review of verbal communication
development, A Picture’s Worth explains how autism
affects the acquisition and progression of those skills.
Without the ability to express themselves, individuals
with autism experience a high level of frustration, which
is the root cause of many undesirable behaviors. The
book explores the relationship between behavior and
communication, teaching parents how to recognize
patterns in their own learner’s behavior and when to
begin a visual communication program such as PECS.
Bondy and Frost describe the six phases of training in PECS and provide many real-life case
studies, along with a complete series of lessons, from beginner to more advanced PECS
techniques.
Welcome to School - Helping Friends With Autism
by Melanie Barrette, illustrated by David Crestan,
photography by Jennifer Newton and Colin James,
2005, 16 pages.
This delightful and beautifully illustrated book
features a boy with Autism Spectrum Disorder
and is perfect for preschool teachers, primary
teachers, support staff and parents to help young
children understand their peers with autism.
Welcome to School highlights its star’s use of
the Picture Exchange Communication System ,
visual aids, and teaches students to understand
behaviors and how they can help their friends
with autism. This book makes a great waiting
room book for your doctor’s or dentist’s office
or a great addition to any early childhood or
daycare classroom.
Where Are We Going? Book Series
The Where Are We Going? book series is designed to help young children with or without
developmental delays, feel successful, more relaxed, and more engaged in a community
activity. This is accomplished using the Tell and Show Before You Go method of teaching, a
simple story theme, 16 pages of color photographs, and picture symbols. The books involve and
entertain while teaching the child appropriate social behavior, promoting verbal and nonverbal
language, and sequencing the transitions in a community activity. Strategies related to
each book’s theme are provided to facilitate using the Tell and Show Before You Go method of
teaching and interactive reading.
Audio Reinforcement Reminder
Tones CD
Instructors who use Differential Reinforcement
Systems will find these CDs essential. Pop a CD
into your CD player, select the track according to
the interval you need, and repeat the track for a
continuous reminder to catch your learners “being
good!” CD #1 has 1, 2, 3, and 5-minute intervals.
CD #2 has 7 and 10-minute intervals. CD #3 has
15-minute intervals. Each track plays a distinct
tone so that you can play more than one CD at a
time for learners needing different intervals and
recognize which interval is sounding. Each tone
is activated on a randomized, variable schedule
(the three-minute tone sounds on average every
three minutes). These tones also are a great tool for
instructors who are teaching individuals to monitor
their own behavior.
Timed Activity Schedule
We found these fantastic digital bookmarks for learners’
activity schedules. Activity schedules are used to indicate
the specific activities and order of activities to be finished
within a particular lesson. For example, a learner’s goal
might be to complete several cleaning tasks in the kitchen,
worksheets during class, or exercises during a physical
education class within a specified time period. The timer
promotes independent completion of the activities within
a time period programmed by the teacher. The teacher
reinforces the completion of all activities within the specified
time and gradually reduces the time allowed until the
learner reaches the final goal!
We add a strip of hook Velcro ® so that you can add your own
pictures. At the top of these durable plastic strips is a digital
clock powered by an included, replaceable watch battery.
Choose to set a countdown timer with alarm that alerts
learners when their time is up or set the cumulative timer to
store time over multiple activities. (Pictures not included)
The Language of Emotions presented by Andy Bondy, Ph.D.
Learn why traditional approaches to teaching ‘the language of emotions’ may
not be effective and how they can be improved. Professional $275 · Parent $175
B.F. Skinner provided an important guide to the analysis of language in his book, Verbal Behavior.
In this book, he stresses the critical value of focusing on the function of various aspects of
communication. His analysis includes a very interesting section on what he termed ‘private
events’. That is, how do we learn to talk about things that happen inside of us? In this workshop,
we will review traditional approaches to teaching children with autism to communicate about
their emotions as well as respond to such language from other people. Participants will be asked
to consider how they currently teach various lessons related to emotions and then to plan to
incorporate Skinner’s analysis into the design of effective lessons. These lessons may involve very
young children, teenagers, or adults who continue to have difficulty with this topic. We also will
look at a very important part of language that helps communicative partners better understand
the perspective of someone who is attempting to communicate. We will review why this area
is so difficult for those with autism and suggest teaching strategies that may lead to successful
acquisition of these complex language skills.
Agenda: 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Registration time 7:30 AM to 8:00 AM
Please contact Pyramid Business Office for CEU Information
What You Will Learn:
• To describe how children typically learn to comment about ‘private events’.
• The type of information adults respond to when teaching children to tell us about their
emotions, and what may be missing for children with autism.
• How to both take advantage of existing emotional displays and how to create situations that
are likely to induce such feelings.
• Why it is not really easy to teach ‘really’.
Tuition Includes:
• Detailed handouts with space for note-taking
Analyzing & Fine Tuning Communication
presented by Andy Bondy, Ph.D.
Professional $275 · Parent $175
This training will introduce attendees to B.F. Skinner’s anaylsis of language (Verbal Behavior) and
its acquisition, independent of modality. This presentation will highlight key functional language
units as well as describe complex cases seen in many language lessons. Issues related to emotions
and other hard-to-learn language concepts for individuals with autism will also be addressed.
Participants will learn about B.F. Skinner’s book, Verbal Behavior (VB), and how it can help improve
their communication training programs for individuals with various learning and developmental
disabilities. Participants will learn how to identify and teach VB in classrooms, homes and the
community. Skinner was explicit that this type of analysis is helpful regardless of the modality of
communication selected- speech, sign, pictures (including the Picture Exchange Communication
System ), reading/writing, or other augmentative systems. The workshop describes Skinner’s
core language functions, each defined in terms of its functional relevance. In addition, this
workshop uniquely addresses how to identify complex verbal operants, demonstrating how
seemingly subtle changes in our teaching strategy may result in significant differences regarding
what individuals learn. Participants will learn how an understanding of how to identify these
complex verbal functions can lead to improvements in teaching strategies no matter which
modality is selected. The protocol for PECS (Frost and Bondy, 2002) is used as an example of a
training sequence that can be analyzed using VB. The workshop reviews issues related to the
difficulty of teaching communicating about emotions and feelings, and describes some of the
central issues related to autism.
Teaching Critical Communication Skills
Help! I can’t wait to ask for a break...and more!
Learn how to teach critical communication skills that lead to greater independence
in the home, work, school and community settings for all learners regardless of
communicative modality.
Professional $275 · Parent $175
There are many skills that are typically taught in communication intervention programs. Individuals
with complex communication needs, however, must master certain critical communication skills
if they are to function independently in the home, community, school and/or vocational setting.
One set of critical skills deals with expressive communication – skills individuals need to convey
important messages to others. Specific skills include: requesting reinforcers; requesting help;
requesting break; acceptance and rejection skills. These skills are crucial because if a person
cannot calmly and effectively communicate wants and needs, he may demonstrate a range of
contextually inappropriate behaviors. To reduce such behaviors, we need to teach five critical
expressive communication skills. A second set of critical skills relates to receptive communication
– a person’s ability to understand important messages from others. Specific skills include: waiting;
following direction; schedule following and transitions. Failure to understand such messages may
be distressing and/or dangerous for the individual. In order to reduce contextually inappropriate
behaviors that occur as the result of such distress, and to ensure that the individual is safe, we need
to teach four critical receptive communication skills. This one-day workshop focuses on why these
nine skills are the highest priority for teaching and how we teach them. The strategies covered
are relevant for anyone with complex communication needs, regardless of their communication
modality (e.g. Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), signing, speech). This workshop
is a must for anyone working and/or living with people with complex communication needs. It is
an important adjunct to training in PECS, but also stands alone for those who have not completed
PECS training. Parents, caregivers, and professionals alike will benefit from this workshop.
Guide to Managing Challenging Behaviors
Learn applications of the Pyramid Approach to Education to the management
of challenging behaviors. Discussions focus on analyzing and addressing a
learner’s skill deficits prior to, or while simultaneously, addressing contextually
inappropriate behaviors.
Professional $275 · Parent $175
The Guide to Managing Challenging Behaviors training involves an introduction to broad-spectrum
behavior analysis in the form of the Pyramid Approach to Education. Discussion focuses on
the importance of addressing learners’ skill deficits prior to or simultaneously with addressing
behavior excess or other unwanted behavior. Additional key elements of the training include the
description and the design of effective educational settings that emphasize the use of systematic
reinforcement. The link between functional activities, communication training and the reduction
of unwanted behavior is explored. In addition, issues related to teaching skills are addressed.
This workshop teaches participants to determine and define unwanted behavior targeted
for intervention. Participants are assisted with understanding the functional assessment of
behavior, and the selection and teaching of alternative responses to replace unwanted behavior.
Participants are exposed to antecedent strategies designed to reduce unwanted behavior, as
well as differential reinforcement procedures and consequence based strategies. Finally, issues
related to the evaluation and monitoring of behavior plans are discussed.
PECS Advanced Training
Your next step in PECS Training… Fine-tune your implementation skills and expand your
repertoire of advanced PECS activities!
Professional $295 · Parent $195
DAY 1: This day provides a thorough review of how to implement each phase of PECS. The
most common implementation problems, including discrimination difficulties, and cutting
edge problem solving strategies will be addressed. Participants will practice their PECS skills
under the guidance of a Pyramid consultant, troubleshoot their personal implementation
issues, and watch video examples of PECS lessons. Participants are encouraged to share
their own successful and difficult cases. The aim is to respond to the difficult cases in a
manner that does not simply “fix” the situation, but results in successful problem solving.
DAY 2: This day explores the incorporation of communication, advanced language and
PECS implementation throughout the day. Both receptive and expressive communication
skills are explored, with a focus on implementing these skills into a variety of functional
activities. Ideas for advanced language lessons for learners using any modality (i.e. speech
generating devices, sign language, speech, etc.) are discussed. The day ends with information
specifically related to incorporating PECS opportunities throughout the day. Concepts
are explored through a combination of videos, discussions and small group activities.
All participants must have previously attended a PECS Basic Training Workshop.
The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is used to teach communication skills
rapidly to those with limited functional speech. PECS promotes communication within a social
context, without lengthy prerequisite training. Training in PECS begins by teaching a spontaneous
request, and goes on to teach additional communicative functions such as responding to questions
and commenting. An added benefit for preschool children with autism and related disabilities is
the high proportion who acquire independent speech. Participants will learn how to implement
the six phases of PECS, plus attributes, through presenter demonstrations, video examples and
role-play opportunities. Participants will leave the workshop with an understanding of how to
implement PECS with individuals with autism, related developmental disabilities, and/or limited
PECS is a language training package that is used to teach communication skills rapidly to
those with limited functional speech. PECS promotes communication within a social context,
without lengthy prerequisite training or expensive materials. Training in PECS begins by
teaching spontaneous requesting, and goes on to teach additional communicative functions
such as responding to questions and commenting. Based on a study conducted at the
Delaware Autism Program, 76% of children using PECS acquired speech as either their
primary means of communication or as augmented by a picture based system. PECS is also
used successfully by many students who have developed speech, but who are not using it
functionally.
