work file (work data set)
parameter
A variable that specifies a value or an
operation to be performed. Used
interchangeably with 'operand.'
PIOCS
Physical input/output control system. Controls
the actual transfer of records between main
storage and auxiliary storage devices.
PUB
Physical unit block. Table which describes the
input/output devices defined to the system.
record mapping
Creating separate control intervals for each
data record on original CKD track.
recovery
Retrieving, securing and protecting data by
restoring a backup tape and then updating it.
restore utility
A program used to secure and protect data by
retrieving, reading and loading the most recent
backup tape.
RPS
Rotational position sensing. Method of locating
data on disk devices.
RPL
Request parameter list. A control block with
information needed to process an I/O request.
sequential access
Locating a record by going through all previous
records one after the other, starting at record
1.
SD file
Sequential disk file. File that is located by first
reading previous files.
SVA
Shared virtual area. Storage area for system
support and use.
track mapping
Combining all key and data records from
original CKD track into one control interval.
TDYNSYNC
A CA utility program that provides tape volume
synchronization between two catalogs that
share tape volume status information.
truncation
Release of unused disk space allocated for a
file.
unit record simulation
Specifying a unit record device (card reader,
printer, card punch) to be simulated as a tape,
sequential disk or VSAM file (as used in CA
Dynam/FI).
UPSI statement
User program switch indicator statement to set
program switches that can be tested.
VCKD
Virtual count-key-data. (See CKD.)
work file (work data set)
File (data set) used temporarily when extra or
intermediate storage is needed for the
processing of a job.
scratch
Erase or overwrite data that is no longer
needed or that has expired.
scratch tape
Tape that is available for reuse.
