Glossary
abend
Abnormal ending. An early termination of a
program due to an error.
access method
A technique for moving data between main
storage and input/output devices.
ACB
Access method control block which contains
control information necessary for linking to
VSAM.
AMF data set
Automatic multifile data set. Automatic
generation of multifile data set names.
ASA
Automatic secondary allocation for disk files.
Provides control of secondary allocation
automatically from JCL or the Catalog.
ASI PROC
Automated system initialization procedure.
Operating system startup commands read from
a procedure library.
AVR
Automatic volume recognition. Provides for
automatic assignment of a mounted disk by
searching for the volume serial number of the
EXTENT statement. The ASSGN statement is
not needed and the user does not have to
know the physical device address.
CA Dynam Catalog
Disk file which stores file attributes and
information necessary for processing those
files.
CA Dynam/D
CA disk management software package.
Provides catalog, disk pool and enhanced VTOC
management.
CA Dynam/FI
CA file independence software package.
Provides flexibility and independence for device
types and files.
CA Dynam/T
CA tape management software package.
Manages tape processing, security and control.
CA SORT
CA SORT/MERGE utility system. Can arrange
files into a single data stream with logical
record selection and manipulation.
CA Earl
CA report writing facility for creating standard
and user-customized reports.
CA SRAM
CA sort facility capable of executing from
within a program.
CI
Control interval. Unit of data (group of records)
transmitted to or from storage.
CKD
Count-key-data. Disk storage device that
stores data in three fields:
• count field (address - by cylinder, head and
record number - and length of record)
• key field (for searching), and
• actual data of record
cuu
Channel and unit address. Tape or disk device
address.
DA
Direct access. A method of locating a record
directly rather than by searching through all
previous records.
