by Bill Hogg
INVITATIONAL!
One simple invitation
can make a world of difference.
Andy, who had joined up with a wild,
wandering prophet, met Jesus. On
the heels of his Jesus encounter, he
immediately invited his brother,
Simon, to meet Jesus. That simple
invitation is still causing after shocks
today!
“The first thing Andrew did was to
find his brother Simon and tell
him, "We have found the
Messiah” (that is, the Christ). And
he brought him to Jesus. Jesus
looked at him and said, "You are
Simon son of John.
You will be called Cephas"
(which, when translated, is Peter).
(John 1:41-42)
Andrew, a brand new Jesus follower,
invited his brother to meet Jesus.
Simon experienced new life and
direction and got a new name to
boot! That simple invitation
sparked a spiritual chain reaction.
We are still experiencing the chain
reaction today! Peter became a
Jesus follower whose impact and
influence is felt generations and
generations later.
Peter preached on the Day of
Pentecost – he was the human agent
of a spiritual combustion. Three
thousand people were catapulted
into the kingdom of God because of
Peter’s anointed preaching. The
primitive Jesus movement was
Jewish. Philip, the evangelist, took
the good news of Jesus to the
despised Samaritans, who were
deemed half-castes and syncretists.
Peter did something even more
radical; Peter was the breakthrough
guy who took the gospel to the
Gentiles in Acts 10. Peter left an
enduring contribution in the New
Testament with 1 and 2 Peter. Some
scholars reckon Mark’s Gospel is a
collection of reminiscences and
eyewitness recollections from Peter.
Every time you leaf through the
pages of Peter’s letters or read
Mark’s Gospel, you are experiencing
Peter’s legacy, a spiritual legacy
made possible because his brother,
Andrew, brought him to Jesus.
One simple invitation
had a huge impact!
One simple invitation can cause a
spiritual chain reaction!
My wife, Morag, was brought up and
baptized Mormon. Her parents were
dedicated and committed to
“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter
Day Saints.” They also dabbled in
Eastern mysticism and became what
you might call “pick ‘n’ mix” in their
beliefs and spiritual practices.
Due to intense family pressure,
they left Mormonism and settled
into a mainline congregation
where the gospel was not preached.
So, how in the world could a little
girl hear the gospel and discover the
love of Jesus? Baptists to the recue!
A bunch of Baptists set up shop in the
local park with a Holiday Bible Club
(a.k.a. Vacation Bible School). Morag
not only had a blast and heard the
gospel- she met a leader called Mary
Pollard. Fast forward 10 or 12 years;
Morag and Mary ended up working for
the same company, in the same office,
and a friendship developed.
As the relationship grew, Mary
extended an invitation to Morag to
join her at a concert in the town hall.
The two friends enjoyed a gospel rock
gig together. The lead vocalist
of the band preached the gospel
and invited those in attendance to put
their trust in Jesus and become lifelong
Jesus followers. That night Morag
was radically saved.
One simple invitation from Mary
proved to be life changing. Andrew
and Mary were invitational Jesus
followers. Will you commit to being
intentionally invitational?
WHO WILL YOU INVITE TO
DISCOVER JESUS?
Who will you invite to explore
the claims of Jesus and follow
Jesus on a journey of discovery
and transformation?
Who are you praying for
that they might experience the grace
and power of Jesus?
Who are you walking with?
Who are the pre-Christians
in your life that you are
investing in and interceding for?
WHO WILL YOU INVITE
INTO YOUR HOME?
As I write this, the balmy mid-May weather has given
way to unwelcome showers. However,
I know that warm weather and warm evenings are up
ahead!
That means barbecues and the glorious opportunity
to hang out with family, friends and neighbours.
It‘s a great time to be invitational
by throwing more red meat on the grill and fostering
friendships! It’s a great time to cultivate connections
by practising hospitality. It’s a great time to extend
your friendship circle and sphere of influence by
inviting people over!
WHO WILL YOU INVITE TO JOIN
YOU AT THE KINDLINGS?
The last Monday of each month we host the
Kindlings at Belle’s on 32 nd avenue in South Surrey.
It’s an evening of great food and drink
and lively conversation as thoughtful talk radio
comes to supper! We open the doors at
6:15 for dinner service; at 7pm
we record a show, in which I moderate and facilitate
conversation amongst a panel,
which addresses a different topic each month. Then,
if you choose, you can raise questions or address
comments to the panel.
It’s a chance to ignite a conversation or a chance to
eavesdrop on hospitable, imaginative ideas that
matter. Our podcasts (www.thekindlings.ca) are
heard and downloaded across the planet.
But right here in Surrey the Kindlings event is a “third
place.” It’s a great venue and forum for
pre-Christians and Christians to meet. It can only be
a third place if not-yet-Christians are welcomed by
hospitable Christ followers. For the Kindlings to be
third place community, you need to be invitational!
Who will you invite for supper? Who will you invite
into the conversations?
WHO WILL YOU INVITE
TO ALPHA?
ALPHA is tailor-made for people to explore the claims of
Jesus in an unpressured way over a meal.
It’s a place for people on a spiritual quest to explore and
kick the tires.
It’s a course where no question is too simple and no
question is too hostile! As we look to run our ALPHA
courses in the fall, why not think and pray about who you
can invite? We don’t want ALPHA to be a night out for the
already convinced. Let’s pray and invite our pre-Christian
friends, family, and neighbours. Let’s see the impact of a
simple invitation!
WHO WILL YOU INVITE TO EXPERIENCE
WONDERFAIRE?
Wonderfaire is a great place for kids to have a blast
and discover God’s love and God’s purpose. It is a
wonderful opportunity to make an eternal difference
in young lives. Encourage your kids to bring their friends.
Be invitational and let your neighbours know that
Wonderfaire is on the horizon.
WHO WILL YOU INVITE TO JOIN YOU AT
GRACEPOINT ON A SUNDAY?
You might think people are hostile to religious institutions
and don’t like the church. You may
believe an invitation to a co-worker or friend
would be instantly rejected. The wild truth is that
people are more open and receptive than you think!
Seven years ago, Thom Rainer, in his book, The Unchurched
Next Door, made an astonishing claim.
He asserted that 82 percent of the unchurched are at least
“somewhat likely” to attend church if they are invited. That
is wild! More than eight out of ten of the unchurched said
they would come to church if they were invited. We know
our spiritual landscape is changing, but we can
still find encouragement in recent findings... A survey from
Lifeway Research discovered that 63% of people are
somewhat or very willing to receive information about
a church from a family member and 56% are somewhat or
very willing to receive information from a friend or
neighbour.
(Continued on page 5)
Page 4
LET’S GET INVITAIONAL!
“We asked a total of 1,000
twenty-something
unchurched people; 900
American, 100 Canadian. And
we compared them to a
sample of 500 older
unchurched
(30 or above). ... And what
we found is that yes, there
are negative views of the
church, two-thirds saying the
church is full of hypocrites,
people who do one thing and
say another. But there was
also great openness that's
there. One of the questions
that we asked them to agree
or disagree with was: ‘I
would be willing to study the
Bible if a friend asked me to?’
Among twenty-somethings,
61-percent said, ‘Yes.’ Among
their older counterparts of 30
and above, 42-percent said,
‘Yes.’ That was a statistically
significant difference saying
there is something going on,
there is an openness that's
there. So we're seeing that as
an opportunity that in the
midst of some negative views
of the church there is also
some openness to the things
of God.” (Ed Stetzer)
(Continued from page 4)
Ed Stetzer has identified that young adults, who are usually seen as
closed to church, are open to the power of invitation! Stetzer’s book:
Lost and Found (The Younger Unchurched and the Churches that Reach
Them) is an informative, surprising, and provocative read. Big Ed is a
missiologist and researcher who tells us:
Let’s create an invitational
community! Let’s follow in the
footsteps of Andrew and Mary
Pollard. Let’s be and become
and invitational church
populated by invitational
people.
With warm Christian love
Blessings on you
KU SPOTLIGHT - CHRIS BIRDSALL: OUR BELOVED ‘MRS. B’
It’s with mixed emotions that we announce Chris Birdall’s resignation effective June 15, 2010. Chris has served as Small Group Director for
the Grade 1-5 kids at Kids Unlimited and has been a fun and faithful part of the Gracepoint Staff for 7+ years. She has been an encourager
for her great teams of small group ‘shepherds’ and supply prep. Chris has a big heart to serve and has been a key member of the KU team,
also Hospitality, Community Dinner and Youth /Jr. High events. She started at Panorama as a volunteer, then joined the KU staff team in
Dec. 2002. She was at the Bell campus for a time leading small group Gr.1-5 at that campus, and currently serves at the South Surrey
Campus on Sundays. She has been a leader in many ways at Wonderfaire and instrumental in children committing their lives to Jesus.
Chris is well loved on our KU staff team, among our kids and volunteers. We will miss her sense of humour, fun, and faithful commitment to
disciple kids on the path to follow Jesus! We wish her God’s best as she proceeds in her adventure by embarking on a new career in the
Surrey School District after recently earning her Special Education Assistant diploma. Congradulations on this accomplishment, Chris!
Thank you, Chris, for your years of exceptional service, your Godly influence and for the incredible difference you make at Gracepoint
(formerly Panorama). We will miss you here in KU and your heart to minister the gospel of Jesus to children and families but know that God
will continue to use you & your family—beyond KU—for His glory. It’s been our joy and honour to know you and serve with you.
With love, Beth & KU staff & volunteers
Here’s an excerpt from Chris’s letter:
“…I have been privileged to work with wonderful volunteers and staff, in a job I only imagined having.”
“Thank you all for giving me this opportunity. I know that this church community is going to grow (God IS good and HE has a plan!) and I
can’t wait to see what He does in the years to come.”
Sincerely, Chris Birdsall
PARENT LINK MONTHLY NEWSLETTER: Children’s Edition
Practical ideas for nuturing children’s faith
This month's topic is faith-building-something that can occur in day-to-day life as well as in
religious settings. Summer is an ideal time for parents to reconnect with children and to help
them connect with God. This newsletter is filled with ideas for boosting children's faith and for
making God a priority in the home.
Highlights of this month's issue include:
JUNE 2010
GROW KIDS’ FAITH THIS SUMMER
The warm, relaxing summer months are perfect for reconnecting as a family.
They’re also ideal for helping your children stay connected to God and boosting
their faith in him.
For starters, participate in faith-building opportunities available in your community.
These include vacation Bible school, church camps, outdoor worship, mission projects,
and more. But realize that faith growth can occur in unstructured, day-to-day
settings, too. By talking to your children often about God—and your relationship
with him—you model faith in action for young Christians.
Use these ideas as a springboard for summer faith growth:
Take it all in. Admire God’s handiwork as you travel and
sight-see. Acknowledge and thank our Creator. Use simple
object lessons; for example, draw a line of chalk in front of
some ants and notice that most of them won’t cross it. Then
talk about what it means to follow and obey God.
Take out the “trash.” Together, clean up a park or street.
Then discuss what God wants us to fill our minds and hearts
with (see Philippians 4:8).
Take it outside. For variety, conduct your family devotions outside in the shade.
Use a book-club format to go through a book of the Bible or a children’s Bible storybook.
Encourage questions and have children put themselves in the people’s shoes.
Then apply the lessons to situations we face each day as we walk with God.
SUMMERTIME STATS
As you nurture your children’s faith this summer, also keep tabs on their physical
and mental well-being.
• More than 10% of children between the ages of 6 and 12 care for themselves
during the summer months, without supervision. If you can’t afford outside child
care, arrange to swap baby-sitting with a trusted friend.
• Most kids lose an average of two months of learning during the summer. Keep
them growing mentally by participating in your local library’s summer reading
program.
ASK GOD:
1. To bless your summer months
with fun, rest, and faith growth.
2. To work in your children’s hearts
and give them the desire to know
God more.
3. To safeguard your family members
physically and spiritually this
summer.
PARENTING INSIGHTS
Never underestimate the power of
family faith conversations. They’re
critical for children’s spiritual
development. So often, though, we
feel ill-equipped to openly discuss
matters of faith. Remember the handy
acronym ALOT to help you tackle any
topic from a faith-based perspective.
Ask—Find out how your child feels
about the situation or topic.
Listen—Listen actively, without
interrupting, while your child
responds.
Open—Open your heart—and your
Bible, if you need to.
Talk—Talk about your thoughts
and feelings on the subject—and
how they’re shaped by God’s
Word. Then also talk to God in
prayer about the issue.
“Faith is the confidence that what we
hope for will actually happen; it gives
us assurance about things we cannot
see.”
Hebrews 11:1
When we believe in God and trust his
promises, we can be certain of his
work in our lives—and of spending
eternal life with him in heaven.
TEACHABLE MOMENTS
1. Fruits of Faith—Pass around a
basket of fruit. Have each person
select a fruit that represents a
character trait; then have that
person share who their fruit
represents and why. This is a great
way to affirm the faith traits you
see in one another.
2. Faith Stretchers—Give each
person a rubber band, and talk
about how it feels when your faith
is stretched. Have each person
stretch their rubber band to show
how stretched their faith has been
lately—a little or a lot.
3. Faith Quilt—Create a quilt-type
mural to signify your family’s
commitment to faith in God.
Brainstorm ways you serve God
and new ways you can honor him
in your home. Write or draw these
ideas on squares of white card
stock, and tape them to a wall.
Add to your mural all summer
long.
When you hit the road or just kick back with your children this summer,
encourage them to open up about life and faith by asking these discussionstarting
questions:
1. What dreams and plans do you have for the summer? What goals should our
family set for the next couple of months?
2. When you think about your priorities, where does faith come in?
How can people tell how important your faith is to you?
3. How strong would you say your faith is right now? What are some ways we
can trust God more?
4. Which of God’s promises means the most to you now, and why?
FAMILY EXPERIENCE: God’s Wonderful World
Learn about God’s creation—and our role in it—by doing these summertime
activities together.
• Shine—To make your own “planetariums,” place oatmeal containers on
scrap wood to protect floors. Help
kids use a hammer and nail to gently
punch holes in the bottoms of the
containers. Turn out the lights. Put
flashlights inside the containers and
enjoy the light show on a ceiling or
wall.
• Say: “Stars are large balls of gas that
produce color, heat, and light. A star
changes over time, but it takes
millions—even billions—of years to live out its life span. The eye can typically
see 2,000 stars on a clear night.” Then ask: “What would night be like
without stars?” Read aloud Matthew 5:14-16. Ask: “Why do you think God
wants us to be lights on earth? How can you shine for God?”
• Grow—Plant seeds close enough to the sides of clear plastic cups to be
visible. Care for the seeds by giving them water and sunlight. After about a
week, roots will be visible.
• Read aloud 1 Corinthians 3:7. Ask: “How did your seed form roots? What
role did you, the potting soil, and the water play? What role did God play?
Could the plant have sprouted without God?” Talk about ways we rely on
God for our spiritual and physical growth. Close in prayer, thanking God for
making all things possible.
Genre: Family drama, action
Rating: PG (for bullying, martial-arts action violence, and some mild
language)
Cast: Jaden Smith, Jackie Chan, Taraji P. Henson
Synopsis: In this remake of the 1984 film, 12-year-old Dre has to leave
Detroit for China because of his single mother’s job. Dre is smitten by a
female classmate, but cultural differences stand in the way. He also
becomes the target of the school bully. A maintenance man teaches
Dre kung fu, which helps him mature and makes life in his new
surroundings more bearable.
Discussion Questions: Think of a time you’ve been an outsider: What made you feel like
you didn’t belong? What helped you adjust to the new situation? Read aloud Romans
12:2. What are some ways you maintain distance from the world while living in it?
What Music Is Releasing
What Games Are Out
Artist: Hanson
Album: Shout It Out
Artist Info: Before the Jonas Brothers, there was Hanson, a threebrother
pop band from Oklahoma best-known for the 1997 hit “MMMBop.” Now in their
20s, Isaac, Taylor, and Zac record under their own label. They’re also involved with fighting
poverty and AIDS in Africa.
Summary: Shout It Out, Hanson’s fifth studio album, is full of energetic, R&B-flavored pop
rock and tributes to classic artists. Several songs, including “Thinking ’Bout Somethin,’”
address relationships gone awry. “Me Myself and I” is about self-reliance: “There’s still
someone that I can tell my troubles to. Me, myself and I will never be alone.”
Discussion Questions: What things can you do well on your own? Do you mind asking for
help? Why or why not? What are the pros and cons of being independent? Read aloud 1
Corinthians 12:12. What does it mean to you to be part of a larger “body” of Christ?
What’s happening right now that
may affect your children and family:
• Smart phones have become
handy baby- sitting tools for onthe-go
parents. For $1.99, the
iStoryTime iPhone app will
“read” a story to young
listeners.
• The number of children with a
food allergy has increased by
18%. One in every 25 kids is
susceptible to allergic reactions
from such ingredients as nuts,
eggs, milk, and wheat.
(U.S. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention)
QUICK STATS
• 85% of parents believe they
have the primary responsibility
for their children’s moral and
spiritual development.
(Transforming Children Into
Spiritual Champions by George
Barna)
• The number of day camps in the
U.S. has grown by nearly 90% in
the past 20 years. More than
half of camps now include
community-service programs.
