IN MEMORIAL: PROFESSOR EMRUSH BALI GASHI
RASHIT ALIDEMA
1. Introduction.
The community of sciences in Kosovo on 06.09.2011 suffered the great loss of the
famous mathematician E.B Gashi.
E. B. Gashi was born on March 10, 1939, in a poor family in the mountain
village, Mramor, in the municipality of Prishtina. He attended elementary school
in his hometown, meanwhile his high school education he completed in ”Shkolln
Normale” in Prishtina.
Emrush was a solitary man, who was very soft-spoken and spoke little. However,
whenever he was asked a question, he answered. It was his good work, communication
skills, scientific depth and rare education that gave him his voice. He was
full of energy, with plans and projects for the future, was completely addicted to
his work, was modest in form and very content. He had an outstanding ability
to illustrate difficult ideas through figures and comparisons that made them more
understandable. For him, nothing was impossible. At school it was very difficult for
him to understand his studies and lectures due to his lack of knowledge of the Serbo-
Croation language, however, he was able to elaborate his studies at home through
illustrations and thus understood them and completed his homework perfectly. The
upcoming mathematician was not pleased with the teaching in auditoriums, as they
seemed to him that they limited the methods of teaching, causing him to turn to
literature to maximize teaching capabilities.
In the year 1960 E. B. Gashi enrolled in the Department of Algebra at the University
of Philosophy, in the Department of Mathematics, in Prishtina - a subsidiary
of the University of Belgrade. Subsequently, he continued his graduate studies at
the University of Natural and Mathematical Sciences of the University of Belgrade,
in the department of algebra, where the leading scientific professor, Dr. Djuro
Kurepa, taught him.
The talented young scientist according to the University of Belgrade’s traditions
immediately applied his scholarly education on solving key problems of the Theory
of Rings and ideals - the Rjabuhinit Andrunakieviit problem in cases of Additive
theory of ideals. His work resulted in new, important and valuable solutions. This
work he extended into his master’s dissertation, which in 1970 he defended brilliantly
and successfully.
After getting his Masters, E. B. Gashi was chosen to lecture on the subject of
Linear algebra and polynomial in the department of Mathematics of the University
of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Prishtina.
E. B. Gashi’s contributions expanded beyond his master’s work. In 1971 he
focused his attention of on the known problem of Additive theory of ideals, this
time - in the University of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, of the University
of Zagreb, under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Veselin Periit. He summarized his
work for his doctoral dissertation, which he defended in 1973 and became among
the first doctors of mathematical sciences in Kosovo.
After his doctoral dissertation, E. B. Gashi was chosen as professors assistant for
the subject of Linear Algebra and Theory of polynomials in the branch of Mathematics
of the University of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of
Prishtina. In 1977 he was promoted to Associate Professor and in 1983 to full-time
professor.
E. B. Gashi has published two of his works in scientific journals with international
reviews:
1) Quasi - ditertiar Ideals, Glasnik matematicki, 7 (27) (1972), 25 - 29;
2) Quasi ditertirs Zerlegung der Ideally, Glasnik matematicki, 9 (29) (1974), 209 -
If his other work had been written in another international language and published
in journals with reviews in countries outside former Yugoslavia, these results would
have became better known universally.
E. B. Gashi, established a successful experience of teaching; for a year he taught
at the high school in Prishtina, for five years he was an assistant lecturer, four
years he was a lecturer, for two years he was an Assistant Professor, he served as
an Associate Professor for five years, and until the end of life for full 28 years he
was a full-time professor at the University of Natural and Mathematical Sciences
of the University of Prishtina. He has written and published three textbooks:
1) Advanced Algebra course, Prishtina, 1998;
2) Theory of Communities and Mathematical Logic, Prishtina, 2000;
3) Vector spaces, Prishtina, 1998;
and a monograph, ”Theory Additive theory of ideals and radicals of the Rings ”,
Prishtina, 2010, published by the Academy of Arts Sciences, which mainly of the
results of his doctorate work. Six of his textbooks regarding primary and secondary
education, have removed him from scientific research, otherwise his contribution
would have been the greatest in the theoretical plan.
The pedagogical and scientific activity of E. B. Gashi is highly valued at home
and abroad. He participated in various presentations in many International Scientific
Conferences.
For his scientific, organizational, pedagogical and social work in a separate measure
he was viewed as an outstanding university professor, and the Senate of the
University of Prishtina awarded him in 2005 with the tile of ”Professor Emeritus”.
In all of his pedagogical and scientific work, E. B. Gashi is especially known
for his skills in handling specific fundamental phenomena, in his own essence, by
considering problems in their entirety.
Under the care, direct guidance, and due to his knowledge and experience and
style of his scientific work, there have been presented three Masters dissertations.
E. B. Gashi dedicated his talent and knowledge to being in service of the national
sciences.
