C
ontinuing education changes lives
for the better. I can say that unequivocally because
I’ve seen its value first-hand. After my parents immigrated
to Canada, my father recertified as a licensed mechanic and
my mother started taking continuing education classes – first learning
English and then studying Early Childhood Education (ECE) in the
evenings.
It wasn’t easy. I remember one cold winter night when my mother,
frustrated at studying in a second language, threw her dictionary out
the window into the snow. My father ran out barefoot to retrieve the
book and reminded her, gently, “We made a deal. One of us would
work – that’s me. And one of us would go to school – that’s you. It is
our only chance to have a better life than the one we left behind.”
In time, my mother graduated with an ECE certificate and went
on to open two licensed daycare centres. She provided a safe and
stimulating environment for thousands of children and employed
hundreds of people over the decades. All thanks to continuing
education and a determination to succeed.
If you share that determination, The Chang School’s flexible,
accessible courses, programs, and services can support you as you
soar to new heights. Many courses let you choose to study in person
or online so you can balance the demands of life, work, and education.
And our partnerships with other educational institutions, industry
leaders, associations, and the local community enable you to make
the right connections to apply your learning.
The Chang School can help you get where you want to go, whether
your goal is to achieve academic success by earning a certificate or
using our university degree credits to bridge to a degree program;
professional success by attaining additional credentials that will allow
you to advance or change your career; or personal success
by pursuing a passion.
I encourage you to browse through our 1,500 courses, seminars,
and workshops, 93 career-related certificate programs, and 13
part-time degrees and consider your path to success – as you define
it, on your own terms. Let The Chang School support you in your
learning journey.
Sincerely,
CELEbRATING ExCELLENCE
IN CONTINUING EdUCATION
Merit-based awards encourage and reward the many
successes of Chang School community members.
The Chang School recognizes
the academic excellence and
leadership of its community
members through annual
awards. A range of merit-based awards is
presented each October at the Leaders in
Learning ceremony, a night designed to
celebrate outstanding leaders in continuing
education. Awards are presented to
those who excel in their course work,
show exceptional promise, contribute
to the Ryerson University community,
demonstrate innovation related to their
professional focus or industry, or volunteer
their time to important causes.
Helen Battersby, who was part of
the team of Landscape Design learners
who won the Shawn Gallaugher Design
Excellence Award at the 2011 Leaders
in Learning ceremony, says her goal in
pursuing the Certificate in Landscape
Design was “to help formalize [her]
existing horticultural credentials” as she
was in the process of launching Gardenfix,
a garden coaching business. Helen says
receiving the award “was a big boost in
credibility,” particularly because her team
was selected from among a very talented
group of landscape designers.
Award donor Shawn Gallaugher,
principal of landscape design firm Shawn
Gallaugher Design and Chang School
instructor, agrees: “I see first-hand the
potential of our learners, so I created this
award to recognize their abilities. My
intent is to provide learners with a formal
acknowledgement of their abilities and
talents, so that they can go out into the
world with confidence after their time
at Ryerson.”
Awards like this one would not
be possible without the generosity
of the many donors who provide
financial rewards to acknowledge the
hard work achieved by Chang School
community members. Adam Kahan,
Ryerson University’s Vice-President,
University Advancement, recognizes
that the generous contributions of The
Chang School’s award donors “foster
opportunities to provide support way
beyond what we would otherwise be able
to offer.” Furthermore, he feels that our
inspiring student award winners are
“models of commitment, excellence, and
the kind of dedication we would like all
of our students to have.”
Gallaugher says the real reward is not
the dollar amount award winners receive,
but “recognition of their talents and a
confidence in their abilities that they can
use to promote themselves for future
employment or to potential clients.”
AbOVE ANd bEYONd: SOARING TO SUCCESS
rudhra Persad is a proud husband and father, mentoring officer, equity issues advocate, university student, and
award winner. ryerson’s supportive environment has helped him excel in these roles on his journey to success.
After he arrived in Canada from
Trinidad and Tobago in 2002,
Rudhra Persad knew he wanted
to upgrade his academic skills
to advance his career and provide the
life he wanted for his family. When he
discovered Bridges to Ryerson at Spanning
the Gaps – Access to Post-Secondary
Education, an academic transitional
program offered through Ryerson’s Chang
School, he realized it offered the perfect
opportunity for him to achieve these goals.
Knowing that his course credits could
apply to an undergraduate program at
Ryerson, Persad jumped on the opportunity
to get started. While participating in Bridges
to Ryerson, Persad was diagnosed with
several learning disabilities, which helped
to put some of his previous difficulties
with education in context. “After a lifetime
of negative experiences with school, the
supportive environment allowed me to
erase that history and discover a passion
for education...Spanning the Gaps
prepared me for the academic rigours
of university without diluting the
material, and introduced me to
various support services at Ryerson.”
Persad is passionate about mentoring
and equity issues, and has almost a decade
of experience working in social and
community service positions. He currently
works in Ryerson’s Tri-Mentoring Program
as a mentoring officer. In this role, he
supports first-generation students that run
programming in various marginalized
communities in Toronto. A desire to give
back to the Ryerson community also led
Persad to co-found Suit Up for Success
(SUFS), a student-run initiative that
provides job-seeking Ryerson students
with free, gently used professional clothing
appropriate for interviews.
Persad has just completed his first
year of Ryerson’s Arts and Contemporary
Studies BA program (Diversity and Equity
Studies Option), and has so far chosen to
take the majority of his courses through
The Chang School due to the convenient
scheduling options and smaller class
sizes. “I have already recommended
The Chang School’s bridging and
certificate programs to others, and will
continue to be an enormous advocate
for The Chang School.”
UNdERSTANdING CHANGE mANAGEmENT
IN EARLY CHILdHOOd SYSTEmS
In partnership with Ryerson University’s School of Early Childhood Studies,
The Chang School is launching a new series of modules to strengthen leadership
capacity related to early childhood systems integration in Ontario.
designed for senior and mid-level
management in organizations
that serve children and families, as
well as senior policy advisors for
the province and municipality who oversee
child and family services, the new Module
Series on Early Childhood Systems Renewal
will build on your understanding of systems
change and transformational processes.
Valerie Kenny, Manager of the Parent
and Family Literacy Centres from Dufferin
Peel Catholic District School Board and
an instructor for the module series,
acknowledges the value of continuous
professional learning at this particular
juncture in all sectors serving children
and families. “To lead and support
educators and health care and family
support professionals through the change
process can be challenging, and relevant
professional learning is necessary to
meet the demands of an ever-shifting
environment. This module series will
equip leaders with the tools needed to
manage systems integration effectively, to
be aware of the potential pitfalls that such
change will bring, and to have the expertise
to facilitate a smooth transition for their
staff teams.”
This module series will address
principles and theories of early childhood
systems change and collaboration,
leadership and communication strategies,
and vision building.
Each module is delivered via a
one-day, on-campus workshop
along with online pre-readings
and post-discussion. Visit
The Publishing program expanded my industry insights
and introduced me to friends and colleagues who share my
passion for books and editing. My academic coordinator
my involvement in networking events. My Random House
allowed me to develop my skills and explore multiple career
paths. At the AGO, I connected with a variety of departments
which renewed my academic interest in art history and led
to a second internship. I would not have earned this position
The magazine industry is constantly evolving, so we have to
be flexible to succeed. I work with publications large and small
that have had to find ways to deliver content across multiple
print and online platforms. The industry’s digital evolution
has expanded the roles of magazine professionals to address
audience engagement through editorial content and social
media strategy, app development, digital subscriptions, and
website revitalization. Led by industry experts, our career -
focused magazine and Web Publishing courses (including
two offered fully online) help you build the appropriate skills
to reach and engage readers and advertisers. These skills can
give you a competitive edge in your career, and can be easily
transferred to other fields. ryerson.ca/ce/magazine
INTERACTIVE ANd INTERPERSONAL
The demands of a busy lifestyle – full- or part-time work, family and social obligations,
and education – can sometimes make you feel like you are expected to be in several places
at once. To accommodate these demands, The Chang School is continually developing
new digital tools for today’s interconnected education experience – even in fields where
interpersonal connections are paramount.
In the past, interaction with university
instructors – an integral part of
the learning experience – required
travelling to campus during office
hours or booking appointments. Not
so anymore. Ryerson University and
The Chang School are helping lead the
evolution of teaching and learning towards
flexibility and accessibility.
Many of The Chang School’s Nursing
courses demonstrate how online course
design has evolved to meet the unique
needs of distance learners. Elaine Santa
Mina, instructor for ‘Statistics and
Nursing’ (CNUR 860), uses Adobe
Connect, a web conferencing platform, for
a unique approach to student interaction.
On Saturday mornings, Santa Mina
provides seminars and Q&A sessions, and
clarifies course content, so that students
can accomplish their learning from
wherever they are. “Nurses are very much
about the interpersonal process. They
work with patients, the public, with people;
their work is all about engagement. For
them to enter into a learning experience
that is accessible, literally in their own
homes, but also interpersonal because they
have the opportunity to get to know the
professor – as an academic, as a nurse, as
a scholar, and as a human being – bridges
that distance in learning.”
The Chang School’s Digital
Education Strategies (DES) team works
collaboratively with faculty and instructors
to produce truly effective online course
materials. This includes original and
innovative rich media and tools such as
digital story-telling videos, short interactive
quizzes, learning exercises with instant
feedback, and larger applications such
as Lake Devo, a unique online role-play
platform. DES instructional designers
also assist in formulating meaningful
discussion points for discussion board
posts, blogs, and reflection journals.
These digital tools and learning activities
engage learners, promote peer-to-peer
learning, and contribute to establishing a
community, which is especially important
for learners studying at a distance.
I work in the technical side of health care, and I registered
in The Chang School’s Health Informatics program to help
keep my skills relevant and open doors for future opportunities.
I am just completing my first course and to my surprise, I still
have great work-life balance and actually enjoy my weekly
assignments. I had some fears about the differences between
online courses and the traditional in-class model, but the
instructors have been superb and very supportive. I also
enjoy collaborating and interacting with fellow health care
professionals. It provides opportunities to see what others
in the field are doing, and has even given me ideas on how
I can effect change in my own workplace.
