10 GAMES
Tier II Program explained Brad Cramer
The Tier II (T2) hockey program is
a way for adults to learn the intricacies
of the game and sharpen
skills necessary to compete and
have fun. It was initially started as
a series of learn to play sessions
by former commish Dan Reinert.
The grand acceptance of the idea
led to a Thursday night open
hockey format where players with
the T2 program combined the two
elements of instruction and play
and became an instant success.
On ice instructors are able to
categorically break the game down
into offense, defense and goaltending.
The end result is a great
learning experience combined with
a serious workout. The group
recently formed a board and
named Maria Poloni president.
They are currently working to seed
at least 4 teams for league play at
the Steel Ice Center this Spring.
An excellent group with superb
leadership and guaranteed to be a
great season. See the Geezer
website for more info.

The GHL continues to grow with
each new season and it’s with
this growth that new challenges
face the GHL Board, the Steel Ice
Center and the players at
large. Part of this growth is a
welcome influx of new players,
some beginners and some experienced.
This growth and onset
of various skill levels has
been a topic of much discussion
throughout our league and one
that we must address in order to
keep the GHL competitive and
growing in a positive manner.
With this in mind, several GHL
Board Members along with Mike
Lichtenberger and various other
key contributors molded the T2
Donations/Contributions
Geezers Giving the Gift
of Life
In June of 2006, the GHL presented
the second annual Fathers
of Time hockey tournament at SIC.
As a result of that event, the GHL
was able to collect enough money
to purchase a Phillips Heartstart
Automatic Defibrillator (A device
used to intervene during a cardiac
emergency). These types of de-
Group. (See Tier II) Many involved
with the program have
improved their level of play and
taken the next step towards participating
in league hockey. The
T2 Group has grown dramatically
and they have continued to draw
more and more new participants
that desire to join the regular
GHL league.
It has been said that since the
opening of the Steel Ice Center,
many of us have played more
hockey than we have in our entire
lives. We have seen our
group continue to grow exponentially.
We have drawn more interest
from adults who want to
learn to play the game than ever
before. Should we shut the doors
and limit the opportunities for
these people?
Tom Martin
vices have saved countless numbers
of lives. With funding help
from the T2 group, we also recently
purchased a secure cabinet
to mount it inside the rink. Once
this is done, the unit will be donated
to the Steel Ice Center.
In addition, the GHL recently made
a cash donation to the Children’s
Hospital of Philadelphia to purchase
an entertainment center for
the neo-natal intensive care unit. I
was told that the entertainment
center would be placed inside the
family lounge - a place where the
families of sick children can go to
relax during time spent waiting.
In answer to this question, I say
No! We need to continue to
evolve our sport and league to
provide everyone an opportunity
to participate. Other sports have
divisions according to ability
level; why should hockey be any
different? The advanced skaters
deserve the opportunity
to elevate the pace of the game
and to play at their level as much
as the beginner players deserve
an opportunity and place to play
where they can grow and enjoy
the game. Playing in a league
where you’re above or below the
skill level of the league is not fun
for you or the other players. So
the time has come to expand the
GHL and add another division
where players can continue their
growth while playing in a fun and
competitive environment. One
where they can standout and
This donation was made in remembrance
of Jacqueline Tramo.
Looking forward into the 2007-08
seasons and tournaments, I see the
GHL growing even more and with this
growth I anticipate our increased
ability to give back to our community
and our members in need. Joe Tonelli
and several others are already in the
planning stage for the third annual
Fathers of Time tournament. This
years proceeds have yet to be allocated
to any cause or recipients. Any
suggestions are welcomed. You may
grow as a player. This new division
will balance out skill levels
and provide a more competitive
environment for all.
Finally, there seems to be some
concern over how this new division
will be received. Understand
that this is an opportunity for the
GHL to grow and provide opportunities
for everyone while keeping
the level of play appropriate
for all participants. It’s about
playing the great game of hockey
and having fun with your fellow
league members. Let’s all embrace
this change and continue
the great success of the T2 program
as we move into a new
division and a new era of the GHL.
“We need to
continue to
evolve our
sport and
league…”

Fathers of Time Hockey Tournament Joe Tonelli
With hockey growing in the Lehigh
area, it seemed a good time to add
a tournament for local GHL players
and to invite other teams for a
broader hockey experience.
Our first tournament was in
June 2005.
All 5 teams were mostly made up
of GHLers. In June 2006, the interest
grew allowing two divisions: an
Over 35 where we had 6 teams
and an Over 50 where there were
5 teams from as far away as Massachusetts.
Of course our first goal is to play
HOCKEY. With the increased number
of teams, there was an abundant
increase in the amount of
money we made to feed our secondary
goal, CHARITY (see Donations/Contributions).
JUNE 1 ST, 2ND, 3RD 2007 is the
date of the next Father’s of Time
tournament. Our hope is to have
16 teams with two age groups as
well as a novice division.
Being able to play this game and at
the same time give back to the
community should make you proud
to be a GEEZER.
This year, a lot of volunteers will
be needed. Last year there were
less than a dozen people who volunteered.
I thank them again. If
you would like to help please email
me at CHIANTINOW@AOL.COM
The Geezer Hockey League is a brand of hockey unlike any other in the surrounding Lehigh Valley
area. The league is starting its seventh season and continues to grow. A three member Board of
Supervisors was formed in early 2006 to oversee league decisions keeping the players best interest
in mind. The focus of this group is to keep the game fun and fair for everyone. The Board is currently
made up of eight active GHL members who regularly meet and discuss the future of the league.
Frequently Asked Questions
We’re on the web:
www.geezerhockey.com
www.steelicecenter.com
Q. Why does the board pick the teams?
A. The evaluation and placement of registered players was started by Jarrod Hill at the leagues inception
in early 2004. The emphasis was to have parity amongst the league by spreading out talent and
skill sets. Upon his departure, the Board was best suited for the task having a strong knowledge of
player style and ability.
Q. Why do we have such late games?
A. The unfortunate truth is that prime time ice is hard to come by. The weekends are flooded with
games ranging from Mite to College age teams. The spring and summer seasons are much less busy
allowing us to take the ice sooner (and be home in bed sooner!).
Q. Can I join the league without being evaluated?
A. No. The evaluation rating is crucial in selecting teams. A series of drills are used to reveal a players
talent level and positional awareness.
THE GEEZER CUP
The championship team
members each get to
take the cup home for a
day. Take photos of your
event and submit to Brad
Cramer for posting on
the geezer website.
Creativity is welcomed
but please don’t harm
the trophy.
Q. Can my Geezer team switch players with another team?
A. Under limited circumstances can a roster be changed. Trades motivated by parity are allowed during
the first third of the season. Trades under the hardship rule (i.e. injury, long term sickness, player
moved, etc.) are considered up to the second third of the season. The roster then becomes locked
during the final third and teams must deal with what they have. All trades must pass before the board.
Q. What will the theme be for team names in the 2007 Spring season?
A. Not determined yet. If you have a good idea, pass it on to one of the board members.
