P. M ICHAELSEN, ON SOME UNUSUAL TYPES OF STICK DICE 11
Fig. 2. Att kappas te gudsrike or klättra te himla
from Boda, Dalarna, Sweden.
(Drawing from Keyland 1908).
Västerbotten 1979).
ted to continue, as long as he throws I or II. The blank side does not allow any upwards
move, and if the side with the cross comes up, one has to move back one step down. In
both cases he loses his turn. The two players compete in order to be the first to reach the
top of the ladder. The player who has reached the uppermost twig with his hook, being
one step from ‘heaven’, must throw exactly I with the die in order to win. If he throws
II, he has to return to the same twig again.
In a variant, fårhimmel, played in Norr- and Västerbotten, a flat stick, crossed on one
side and blank on the other, is used as a substitute for the four-sided die. (6) Sometimes two
klavrar are used: pieces of twig, divided lengthwise and provided with one or two strokes
cut into the even sides, as value indicators. If both round sides of these two-sided dice
sticks come up, the player says that they show blint “blind”, and then one has to move
back down to the initial position. Fårhimmel was often played when two shepherds met
in the woods, sometimes in order to solve disputes.
At the Nordiska Museet, Stockholm, two examples of such games have been preserved,
one from Vilhelmina in Norrbotten with two 2-sided dice sticks, and one from
Boda in Dalarna, with one 4-sided dice stick, 30 mm long and 16 mm wide. (7) The die
is neither pyramidal nor rounded at the ends, and can therefore in principle fall on the
ends, too. This is probably not a great problem, as long as the game is played outdoors in
the woods.
