奧 運 知 多 少 ?

The reality of the Games, or maybe even Olympic fever, will strike many of
us when the Olympic torch races into town in just a few days, on 2 May. With
fewer than 100 days to go until the Games commence, just how well-versed
are you in the basics of Olympic history? Just in time for the start of the Games,
here’s a bit of Olympic lore.
Do you know the history and significance of the torch relay? As Prof. Leung
Mee-lee, Director of the Centre for Olympic Studies, explained, for the ancient
Greeks fire was divine and burned permanently during the Olympic Games
at their traditional home of Olympia. While the torch itself symbolises peace,
the relay across five continents represents the sharing of peace with people
around the world. The torch relay, one of the strongest links between the
Ancient Olympic Games and the Modern Olympic Movement, was re-introduced
in 1936 at the Berlin Games.
Prof. Leung is keen to point out that the concept of “Olympism” differs from
“Olympic spirit”. She said that the first Olympic Games, held in 776 BC in
Athens, paid homage to Zeus, the father and supreme ruler of the ancient
Greek gods and goddesses. It was here that the older ideal of Olympic spirit,
with its emphasis on competition and athletic excellence, was born. Olympism,
in fact, is a much newer concept.
The meaning of Olympism
After centuries of neglect, the modern Olympics were revived in 1896 by a French educator, Baron Pierre
de Coubertin who considered sport a cornerstone of his educational philosophy. He advocated sport not as an
end in itself, but as part of his modern concept of Olympism that sought to develop a balanced “whole” person by
blending athletic effort with a cultural and artistic education. Prof. Leung stresses that modern “Olympism is a
state of being that advocates perfecting one’s body, mind and spirit through the vehicle of sport”, whereas Olympic
spirit ensures that all athletes compete on a level playing field.
Although less well known than the athletic aspects of the competition, the Olympic Games regularly incorporate
cultural festivals and artistic competitions in support of de Coubertin’s ideal of Olympism. According to his philosophy,
these elements were inseparable from education.

奧 運 會 開 始 , 納 入 奧 運 的 儀 式 。
梁 教 授 亦 表 示 ,「 奧 林 匹 克 主 義 」 與 「 奧 運 精 神 」 不 盡 相
同 。 公 元 前 七 七 六 年 在 雅 典 舉 行 的 首 屆 奧 林 匹 克 運 動 會 , 相 傳 是
為 祭 祀 希 臘 諸 神 而 舉 行 , 講 求 公 平 競 賽 和 完 美 競 技 運 動 的 奧 運 精
神 隨 之 誕 生 。「 奧 林 匹 克 主 義 」 卻 是 到 現 代 奧 林 匹 克 才 形 成 的
觀 念 。
奧 運 主 義
一 八 九 六 年 , 法 國 教 育 家 顧 拜 旦 倡 議 復 辦 奧 林 匹 克 運 動
會 。 他 認 為 運 動 是 其 教 育 哲 學 的 基 石 , 主 張 運 動 應 與 文 化 和 藝
術 教 育 相 結 合 , 從 而 達 至 「 全 人 」 的 均 衡 發 展 , 是 為 「 奧 運 主
義 」。 梁 教 授 強 調 , 奧 運 精 神 著 重 公 平 競 賽 , 現 代 奧 林 匹 克
主 義 則 是 「 一 種 人 生 哲 學 , 透 過 運 動 , 令 身 、 心 和 精 神 的 結
合 得 到 完 美 的 發 展 。」
因 此 , 在 奧 運 會 舉 行 期 間 , 一 般 會 有 文 化 節 和 藝 術 比 賽
等 活 動 同 步 舉 行 , 以 體 現 顧 拜 旦 提 倡 的 奧 林 匹 克 主 義 – 運
動 、 文 化 和 藝 術 均 與 教 育 不 可 分 割 。
Olympic Equestrian Events at a glance
奧 運 馬 術 比 賽 簡 介
The Olympic Equestrian Events comprise 3 disciplines - Dressage,
Jumping and Eventing - with individual and team competitions in each.
Dressage
* Often called “equestrian ballet,” dressage focuses on the harmony,
lightness and ease of movement of both the rider and horse.
* The rider and horse are required to perform two rounds of movements
set by the Fédération Equestre Internationale. In the final round,
they freely interpret, in self-choreographed movements, to music
of their choice.
Jumping
* Demonstrates the horse’s freedom, energy, skill, speed and
obedience in jumping; it also exhibits the competitor’s horsemanship.
* The rider and the horse need to clear a series of 10 to 13 obstacles
in the prescribed order along a set course. Penalties are incurred
if faults are made.
Eventing
* Encompasses three tests – Dressage, Cross-Country and Jumping.
* Demands on the part of the rider considerable experience in all
branches of equitation and a precise knowledge of his or her horse’s
ability; the horse must display a degree of general competence,
resulting from intelligent and rational training.

十 三 個 障 礙 , 馬 匹 拒 跳 、 碰 倒 欄 杆 、 逾 時
完 成 或 騎 手 墮 馬 , 均 會 被 罰 分 。

A taste of the Olympics
京 奧 盛 會
In August while the community shares in the excitement and thrills of “Olympic fever”, a group
of HKBU students will have their chance to play a role in the Games – 42 students from the Department
of Cinema and Televisio and the Translation Programme were selected by the Beijing Olympic
Broadcasting Co. Ltd. (BOB), host broadcaster of the Beijing Olympics, to join official broadcasting
teams in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and Shenyang in the 2008 Broadcast Training Programme
(BTP).
Once-in-a-lifetime privilege
Sandy Lee of the International Office, which co-ordinated the BTP at HKBU,
said that among Hong Kong tertiary students, only HKBU students were
offered this once-in-a-lifetime privilege. Since students themselves will
be interpreting and broadcasting portions of the mega event, Sandy said
that only students with relevant professional expertise were invited to join
the training workshop.

covered general knowledge of the Olympics, Olympic protocol, broadcasting
and media techniques and the BOB . Of the 60 some students who attended
the workshop, 42 were chosen for the BTP. Their broadcasting and interpreting
roles cover a full spectrum, including audio assistants, camera assistants, interpreters, liaison
officers, logistics officers and utility officers.
Celia Wan, a Year 4 student in Translation, said she felt honoured and excited to be chosen
to work as a liaison officer at the Olympic Equestrian Events. Candy Wong, an MFA Year 1 student
admitted she feels both pressure and excitement. “The BOB is professional and attentive to
every detail. They will even have all of our uniforms tailor-made.”
Training for professional presenters
The Department of Physical Education has contributed to the Olympic effort
by offering for the first time a ten-week training course for 80 presenters of the
2008 Olympic Games. The course was held at the invitation of the Sports Federation
& Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SFOC) and the Television Broadcasts
Ltd. (TVB), with an aim to produce professional Olympic Games TV programmes
that feature solid, in-depth and objective commentary.

closely entwined with society, and impact on it,” said Dr. Lau.

first recruits to be trained along with other TVB artists and production crew; he
found the training very useful. “I have learnt the skills and attitude necessary to
deliver a professional sports presentation. The chance to meet so many
experienced athletes was particularly exciting.”
Joe has been offered an internship at TVB during the Games, and will be
responsible for information management. Another eight students from PE will also
volunteer at the equestrian events in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong plays a part
Hong Kong has taken part in the Games for over 50 years, with its first Olympic team
of four swimmers travelling to Helsinki, Finland in 1952. So far, our medal tally is one gold
medal and one silver – won, respectively, by windsurfer Lee Lai-shan in 1996 and by the
table-tennis duo Ko Lai-chak and Li Ching in 2004.
Although the rules of the sport may be new to many people, Hong Kong is the natural
choice to host the equestrian events in the Beijing Games. The territory’s longstanding
enthusiasm for horse racing meant that it already had in place the
top-notch professional support and facilities – such as veterinarians and wellequipped
stables – necessary to host equestrian events. The main venue,
the Hong Kong Olympic Equestrian Venue, located at the Shatin racecourse,
boasts a complex that incorporates a 100m x 80m all-weather sand area
as Main Competition Arena, which can seat 18,000 spectators, air-conditioned
stables for over 200 horses and air-conditioned indoor practice quarters. (See

的 評 述 員 提 供 全 面 的 培 訓 。 除 了 基 本 的 奧 運 知 識 外 , 亦 會 教 授 奧 運 對 社 會 、 經 濟

禮 澤 和 李 靜 於 二 零 零 四 年 雅 典 奧 運 奪 得 。
今 年 , 香 港 成 為 北 京 奧 運 馬 術 比 賽 的 場 地 。 雖 然
好 些 港 人 對 馬 術 運 動 感 到 陌 生 , 但 由 於 賽 馬 運 動 在 港 發
展 成 熟 , 各 項 軟 、 硬 件 配 套 完 備 , 例 如 專 業 獸 醫 和 設 施
完 善 的 馬 房 , 因 此 香 港 成 為 主 辦 馬 術 比 賽 的 理 想 場 地 。

Many working parents in Hong Kong hire domestic helpers from overseas to take
care of their children. But how can this impact on a child’s development and the parentchild
relationship? Prof. Vicky Tam, Professor of Education Studies, shares her insights...
Managing a one-man company?
Parents employing a domestic helper often find it difficult to ensure a consistent approach between them and their
helper in terms of disciplining their child. Prof. Tam comments: “Hiring a helper is very much like managing a one-man
company. Parents must communicate clearly regarding how they expect their helper to work with them in disciplining the
child. Always communicate clearly the important values you expect your helper to espouse in the care of your child.”
Managing a rebellious child?
Prof. Tam shared an interesting story she overheard on a bus one day. “A mother learned over the phone that her
daughter was reluctant to go to piano lessons, which she eventually missed. But instead of discussing with the daughter
about attendance, the mother yelled at the helper for her missing the lesson.
Cases where the parent blames the domestic helper for some wrongdoings of the child are common. Parents must
make sensible judgments about the target of disciplinary actions – the child or the helper. They should also set guidelines
for the helper on giving appropriate punishment to the child for misbehaviours. For example, a suitable punishment might
be to shorten TV time or skip a favourite snack, in order to let the child know he/she should improve behaviour.”
Don’t overly rely on your helper!
Parental care is indispensable. Prof. Tam emphasised how important it is that parents spend time with their children. Overly
relying on a helper is poor parenting.
Mother’s Day
With Mother’s Day just around the corner, Prof. Tam said parents should not expect too much enthusiasm from their adolescent
children for such celebrations. Many teenagers are not enthusiastic about such occasions because they are, by nature,
more self-centred than adults. Parents must understand a meek response to such festivals is normal and provide the freedom
for their children to express (or not as the case may be) their feelings naturally. “After all, I think regular family gatherings
are more important than festive celebrations. Communication is always the key in establishing and sustaining strong ties
between parent and child.”

譚 教 授 笑 說 :「 曾 經 在 巴 士 上 聽 見 一 個 媽 媽 因 女 兒 不 肯 上 鋼 琴
課 而 在 電 話 中 大 聲 喝 罵 她 的 外 傭 , 這 個 做 法 可 真 發 人 深 省 ! 作 為 家
長 必 須 客 觀 判 斷 是 非 , 更 可 以 考 慮 為 外 傭 訂 下 指 引 , 在 孩 子 不 聽 話
時 作 出 適 當 的 制 衡 , 例 如 縮 短 看 電 視 時 間 或 不 准 吃 喜 愛 的 零 食 等 ,
以 免 孩 子 被 寵 成 家 中 的 小 霸 王 。」
外 傭 不 是 代 母 !
父 母 對 孩 子 的 愛 仿 如 植 物 生 長 必 需 的 養 份 , 譚 教 授 特 別 提 醒 家
長 親 子 的 重 要 性 , 切 勿 過 於 依 賴 外 傭 , 把 照 顧 孩 子 的 責 任 假 手 於
人 。
平 常 心 看 待 母 親 節
母 親 節 快 到 了 , 譚 教 授 表 示 :「 媽 媽 應 以 平 常 心 看 待 母 親 節 ,
尤 其 要 明 白 成 長 期 中 的 青 年 人 一 般 較 自 我 中 心 , 可 能 對 這 些 節 日 表
現 得 冷 淡 一 點 ; 父 母 必 須 明 白 這 是 成 長 中 的 必 經 階 段 , 應 嘗 試 給 他
們 多 些 空 間 。 此 外 , 定 期 的 家 庭 聚 會 比 慶 祝 節 日 更 為 重 要 , 父 母 和
孩 子 多 些 溝 通 , 關 係 自 然 更 親 密 。」

The Campus Doctors
校 園 設 施 醫 生
The craftsmen of Estates Office’s Building Repairs and Maintenance
team wear many hats: sometimes carpenters, sometimes locksmiths,
plasterers, painters, door or window repair specialists. No matter
what arises, these “campus doctors” fix the problem with efficiency
and strong team work, ensuring that everything is in perfect working
order.
Although the scope of their job is daunting, the multi-talented
team of seven, Wong Kwan, Chui Ka-cheung, Tam Che-chor, Tsang
Tin-ming, Chan Wing-chuen, Siu Man-nam and Wu Ying-choi look
after every single aspect of every single facility on campus – taking
everything in their stride.
On HKBU’s three Kowloon Tong campuses, some 30 buildings
house more than 100 offices and classrooms. Consider the maintenance
needs that arise in just your own flat, then multiply
that by 100! One can scarcely imagine how much
time and attention are required to maintain and repair
so many doors, walls of buildings, windows, floor
tiles, locks, panels, lockers, notice boards and more.
Staff’s “saviours”
Mr. Wong Kwan, who has been with HKBU
since the 80’s, said, “In the past we used to work
more on wooden fixtures, even building the
cabinets from scratch. Now we concentrate on
repair and maintenance. For instance, we must
regularly check and inspect all the windows on
campus to ensure they are safe, and replace
rusty door hinges with new
ones.”
They are also the staff’s
“saviours”. Whatever sticky
problems your office presents
you with, be it defective door
locks, lost drawer keys or
moving your keyboard drawer,
don’t worry, the team will fix the
problem for you.
Multi-tasking
As the University has
grown, they’ve had to develop
the skill of multi-tasking – recently becoming experts at hanging
banners. Their record, says Mr. Tam Che-chor, is hanging
13 banners in one day. “The biggest one we ever hung was
about three to four storeys high, measuring more than 30
feet in length and 10 feet in width.”
The team also hangs the art work and paintings on
display at the Exhibition Hall in Lam Woo International
Conference Centre. Exhibiting the work properly requires
skill and dexterity; it’s not as simple as you might imagine.
Team spirit makes success
Mr. Siu Man-nam said, “Each art work has its
own space requirements, and sometimes the Gallery’s
layout is not ideal. Then, we have to think how to adapt
the setting to meet the user’s needs.”
During the recent AVA students’ painting exhibition,
two of the paintings had to be hung together to form a
single piece. The original hanging system could not
accommodate the paintings, so improvisation and some
wire were needed to ensure that the works looked their
best.
Team spirit and close co-operation form the basis
of the team’s success, enabling them to tackle so many
jobs successfully. As Mr. Chui Ka-cheung said, “Many of
our jobs cannot be done by one person. Teamwork plays
an essential role.”

七 名 成 員 包 括 黃 坤 、 徐 家 祥 、 譚 志 初 、 曾 天 明 、 陳
永 泉 、 蕭 文 南 和 胡 英 才 , 分 駐 新 、 舊 校 園 , 照 顧 校 園 內
的 每 一 處 設 施 , 小 至 地 磚 門 鉸 , 大 至 門 窗 外 牆 , 都 是 他
們 悉 心 照 料 的 對 象 。
浸 大 位 於 九 龍 塘 的 三 個 校 園 共 有 超 過 三 十 幢 建 築
物 , 辦 公 室 、 課 室 數 目 逾 百 , 試 想 當 中 的 門 、 窗 、 地
磚 、 門 鎖 、 層 板 、 儲 物 櫃 、 壁 報 板 的 數 目 之 多 , 單 是
保 養 維 修 , 已 是 一 項 龐 大 的 工 程 。
主 力 維 修 保 養
資 歷 最 深 、 於 八 十 年 代 已 服 務 浸
大 的 黃 坤 師 傅 說 :「 以 前 我 們 主 要 做 木 工
的 工 作 , 例 如 由 零 開 始 , 釘 釘 嵌 嵌 的 把 一
個 櫃 子 造 出 來 。」
「 現 在 則 主 力 維 修 保 養 , 好 像 檢 查 全 校 的
鋁 窗 有 沒 有 鬆 脫 的 跡 象 , 把 生 的 門 鉸 換 上
新 的 。」
他 們 也 是 辦 公 室 同 事 的 「 救 星 」, 例 如 門
鎖 壞 了 、 抽 屜 鑰 匙 遺 失 了 、 鍵 盤 座 移 了 位 ,
他 們 都 會 出 手 相 救 。
工 作 趨 多 元 化
隨 著 大 學 不 斷 發 展 , 他 們 的 工 作 也 更 多 元
化 。 例 如 懸 掛 巨 型 海 報 , 近 年 便 成 為 他 們 的
主 要 工 作 之 一 。
譚 志 初 師 傅 表 示 , 最 高 紀 錄 是 一 天 內 掛 了
十 三 幅 巨 型 海 報 。「 至 於 最 大 的 一 幅 , 足 有
三 十 呎 高 、 十 多 呎 闊 , 約 相 等 於 三 、 四 個 樓
層 的 高 度 。」
林 護 國 際 會 議 中 心 展 覽 廳 經 常 看 到 的 藝 術
品 展 和 畫 展 , 也 是 他 們 的 傑 作 。 把
一 幅 幅 畫 作 懸 掛 起 來 看 似 容 易 , 原
來 大 有 學 問 。
發 揮 團 隊 精 神
蕭 文 南 師 傅 說 :「 每 次 用 家 的 要 求
都 不 一 樣 , 而 展 覽 廳 固 有 的 設 備 不 一 定
能 配 合 , 此 時 我 們 便 要 動 腦 筋 , 想 辦 法
靈 活 運 用 固 有 設 備 , 以 滿
足 用 家 的 要 求 。」

Forty students from the Department of Journalism, led
by Prof. Huang Yu, Head of Journalism, and Prof. Yu Xu, Professor
of Journalism, visited Taiwan to get a taste of what it’s like being
a frontline journalist. They covered and reported breaking news
during the presidential election. More than twenty of their releases
were adopted by the local media.

The School of Communication’s Institute for Journalism and
Society launched the Journalist-in-Residence Programme
from 7-11 April. Two distinguished local journalists, Mr. Ng Hiutung
and Ms. Polly Hui, were on campus for a week to conduct
eight in-class discussions for about 300 students and to
give a public talk, entitled “How Journalists Fit in the Ever-changing
Media Environment”.

and to introduce him to the media and
local cultural circle. The event attracted
more than 70 guests, staff and students.

The School of Business was
accepted to join the PRME (Principles
for Responsible Management Education)
of the United Nation Global Compact.
By joining the Compact, the School aims
to raise the standard of CSR in Hong
Kong and the Mainland. It represents
the first time a local business school has joined such global network.

Mr. Rudolf Hykl, Consul-General of the
Czech Republic in Hong Kong,
enlightened listeners with his public
lecture on “The Czech Republic – The
European Journey” on 15 April for the
Consul-General-in-Residence
Programme 2008. His presentation shared his first-hand
perspective on the country’s recent political and economic
development.

More than Words 「 正 字 」 大 解 構
At one time or another many of us find that certain words, in Chinese or English, are confusingly similar in their meaning,
usage or pronunciation. Occasionally, we may use the word incorrectly, with the result being, at best, a joke or, at worst, a
misunderstanding. In this issue, we have invited two lecturers from the Language Centre, Dr. Ho Shing-bon (Senior Lecturer)
and Ms. Lina Chu (Lecturer I), to explain, respectively, two pairs of Chinese and English words that frequently pose a challenge
to people.
日 常 生 活 中 , 我 們 可 能 會 遇 到 不 少 解 釋 、 用 法 和 讀 音 都 容 易 讓 人 混 淆 的 中 、 英 文 字 , 或 許 你 也 曾 錯 誤 地 運 用 這 些 字 詞 ,
因 而 弄 出 不 少 誤 會 及 笑 話 。 今 期 《 浸 大 校 園 》 邀 請 了 語 文 中 心 高 級 講 師 何 成 邦 博 士 和 一 級 講 師 朱 麗 娜 女 士 , 分 別 為 大 家
解 構 兩 組 容 易 被 混 淆 的 中 、 英 文 字 詞 。
REMEMBER:
“To lie” means to put the body in a flat position (often used
with “down”, meaning to take a rest). It is an intransitive
verb, meaning it needs no direct object; its key forms are
lie, lay, lain and lying.
e.g. • Would you like to lie down and relax for a short while?
• He lies down on the bench and takes a short rest.
• He got tired and lay on the floor for a rest.
• He was lying on the floor when the police found him.
• He has lain on the floor for two hours.
“To lay” means to put or place something somewhere. It
is a transitive verb, requiring an object. Its meaning can
vary according to the different object it takes. Its key forms
are lay, laid, laid and laying.
Lie ( 躺 臥 ) vs. Lay ( 放 下 )
Ms. Lina Chu said that the two verbs “to lie” and “to lay” sometimes cause confusion because some of their
principal forms look similar.
e.g. •I lay the documents on the desk. (put or place things)
• She laid the papers on the desk and went away.
• The management lays down some conditions for the
experiments. (establishes some rules or conditions,
present tense is commonly used in written documents)
•We are laying down some rules for the competition.
(continuous tense is the most commonly used form)
• The soldiers refuse to lay down their weapons. (put
down the weapons, stop fighting)
• Don’t worry. The gangs have laid down their guns.
“Lie” and “Lay” have other meanings too. Ms. Chu
recommends that colleagues check the dictionary
when in doubt, or look up websites such as www.
confusingwords.com.
「 舒 緩 」 / 「 紓 緩 」
何 成 邦 博 士 表 示 , 某 些 中 文
字 的 結 構 和 用 法 頗 為 繁 複 。 所 謂
「 正 字 」, 背 後 都 有 一 套 特 定 的
參 照 標 準 和 理 據 , 加 上 兩 岸 三 地
的 準 則 各 有 異 同 , 又 涉 及 繁 簡
字 、 異 體 字 、 新 字 型 字 、 通 假 字
的 選 用 , 因 此 並 不 一 定 有 非 黑 即
白 的 用 字 標 準 , 有 時 會 出 現 多 於
一 個 「 正 字 」 的 情 況 。

何 成 邦 博 士
就 以 「 舒 緩 壓 力 」 和 「 紓 緩 壓 力 」 為 例 , 究 竟 哪 個
才 「 對 」? 何 博 士 解 釋 , 其 實 兩 者 都 可 以 是 「 對 」 的 。 據
《 說 文 解 字 》,「 舒 」 的 本 義 是 「 伸 」, 另 有 「 緩 」 的 意
思 ; 而 「 紓 」 的 本 義 就 是 「 緩 」。 可 見 「 舒 」 和 「 紓 」 在
「 緩 」 的 義 項 上 是 相 通 的 。 不 過 在 現 代 漢 語 中 ,「 舒 」 是
常 用 字 , 多 用 於 「 舒 服 」、「 舒 適 」、「 舒 暢 」 等 詞 中 ;
「 紓 」 則 較 為 少 見 , 通 常 出 現 在 「 紓 解 」、「 紓 難 」 等 詞
中 。 由 於 「 舒 」 較 常 見 , 不 少 人 便 認 為 「 舒 緩 」 是 「 正 」,
而 「 紓 緩 」 是 「 誤 」, 其 實 兩 者 並 不 互 相 排 斥 , 都 可 以 是
正 確 的 。
何 博 士 補 充 , 若 以 字 的 本 義 為 參 照 標 準 ,「 紓 緩 」 可
能 比 「 舒 緩 」 更 為 準 確 和 貼 切 ; 但 若 以 通 行 常 用 為 準 則 的
話 , 則 「 舒 緩 」 似 較 可 取 。
何 博 士 指 出 , 中 文 字 內 蘊 深 厚 , 一 筆 一 劃 都 是 文 化
的 累 積 , 值 得 我 們 尊 重 。 他 建 議 同 事 在 字 詞 運 用 上 遇 到 疑
問 時 , 不 要 單 憑 感 覺 或 記 憶 作 判 斷 , 最 佳 方 法 還 是 借 助 字
典 和 辭 典 !
