Vale - John ‘Jake’ Foster
11.5.1931 - 28.1.2013
Anglesea SLSC lost a long time Hon Medical
officer and a generous Patron when ‘Jake’
passed away succumbing to a protracted
illness. ‘Jake’ was a leading Melbourne Eye
Surgeon, an Olympian in water polo in 1956,
a formidable ‘A’ Grade tennis player at LTAV
Kooyong where he became President and a
Life Member. A very tall man, his reach served
him well in water polo but also in tennis where
court coverage was left to his massive reach
rather than adept footwork! ‘Jake’ enjoyed his
decades long Anglesea SLSC association not
only in his Honorary roles of MO and Patron
but in earlier times a session of body-surfing
with some of the club members who could
keep pace in the surf was one of his great
joys. Social occasions around the Club, The
Patrons’ Barrel, The Patrons Luncheon or the
Winter swimming group The Polar Bears BBQ
were always enjoyed by ‘Jake’ even if he was
accepting his own hospitality! ‘Jake’ had the
unique status of not only being an Olympian
he was also the Father of two Olympians,
Margot (rowing) and Peter (kayak). ASLSC
has invited ‘Jake’s’ wife Elizabeth to accept the
role of Patron which Elizabeth has graciously
accepted. The President, Committee and
Members have conveyed condolences to the
Foster Family on their loss.
