Work has already begun on the upcoming
season by both competitors and support staff
and I would encourage all competitors to take
advantage of the many training opportunities
being offered. Information on training can
be obtained via the club web page or by
contacting me. As this is the last of my three
seasons as the Director of Competition I
would like to personally thank the following
people: Peter Williams for his support and
guidance, Kevin Rigg, Chris Porter, Marc
Lionet, Peter Hurst, Matt Solly, Bridget and
Steve Tribe, Peter Van Miltenburg, Geoff
Waters, Warren Clarke, Ingilby Dickson, Tom
Cullen, Tom Penny as well as all directors and
committee members. Thanks also to the many
hundreds of other people who have assisted
the competition team in that time. Keep up the
training and good luck in the future
Anglesea Surf Boat
Section Report
The section has completed a long season
commencing with the World Championships
(Rescue 2012) in Adelaide during November
and concluding with the Australian SLSA
Championships at Kirra during April.
While we still lack a mens crew to compete in
Open competition, the womens section has
continued to grow and put in some outstanding
performances throughout the season. There
was certainly a good deal of success particularly
in the Masters categories. Some of the standout
results for the season included:
The ladies crews performed exceptionally well
during the season with results that were well
deserved given their intensive training program
and the great contribution of the sweeps,
Doug Solly, David ‘Fan Belt’ Eades and Andrew
Holding.
The 240+ Mens Masters also performed well
and were unlucky not to get a podium position
at the Worlds while disaster struck just prior
to the Aussies with Ian McGain suffering from
‘ticker’ issues which resulted in his having to
withdraw. Kevin Bent did a great job stepping
in for Ian although during the return to shore
in for Ian although during the return to shore
in the final at Kirra, during a bit of large wave
manoeuvring, he unexpectedly left the boat and
hasn’t been seen since. It was also interesting to
note that the boat eventually crossed the line in
good order…alas minus the crew!
Special note should be made of our crew in
the Womens Open who rowed very well and
made it through to the third round, just failing to
qualify for the final.
Overall, the boat section was well represented
in competition with some good results and
we have good prospects for an even more
successful season in 2014. The Womens crews
have in many respects, led the way and with new
recruits coming on board next season Anglesea
should continue to be a force in both Open and
Masters competition.
The ‘Fan Belters’ are showing great improvement
in Reserve Grade with some very good results
this year, to build on. Their performance at the
Vic titles in setting up our Anglesea team in the
Lifesaver’s Relay was exceptional. We will be
looking to strengthen the Mens section in 2014
