Employment
Assistant Professor (Tenure Track)
Director – Ormerod Laboratory of Stem Cell Research
J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering
Joint Faculty in Neuroscience
Since November 2006
Research in the Ormerod Laboratory strives to regenerate or repair neural circuits damaged by disease or
injury using endogenous or transplantable stem cells to reverse the associated cognitive deficits. Projects in
the Ormerod Laboratory employ culture systems to understand how to generate appropriate neural cell
subtypes using stem cells and to promote their functional integration into damaged neural circuits. Animal
models are employed to understand and engineer the niches that promote neuron production in the adult brain
and the relationship between neuron addition and cognition.
Techniques used include histology, immunohistochemistry, confocal and fluorescent/transmitted light microscopy, realtime
PCR, cell isolation/culture (stem cell assays, microelectrode array assays, vascular/NPC co-cultures), proteomics
(Bioplex multiplex fluorokine assays), statistical analyses, behavioral assays, animal models of human disease.
Teaching Experience
Classroom
Undergraduate
BME 3323L/5052L “Cellular Engineering Laboratory”
(developed Module 1 in 2011/taught Spring terms since 2011)
Module 1 (8 weeks-long) consisted of a 50min lecture, 2-3h laboratory sessions and a 30-min cell feeding
session weekly. Students cultured neural stem cells for the experiment that they designed, executed and wrote
up in IEEE Transactions in BME format. Lectures exposed the students to academic and industrial BME
culture systems, laboratory safety, human and animal cell regulatory oversight, aseptic technique and Good
Manufacturing Practice. Lab notebook write-ups, research homework, group discussions/presentations, an
exam and final written reports were graded. With ABET accreditation in mind, I generated lectures,
laboratories, a laboratory manual and a teaching manual.
11

EML 4930 “An Introduction to Biomedical Engineering”
(developed Summer 2007/ co-taught Fall 2007).
EML 4930 introduced undergraduate students to BME research topics. BME Faculty members introduced a
BME topic in 2 lectures and then their related research in a 3rd lecture. Weekly assignments describing lecture
material promoted regular attendance and exams tested the students’ understanding of both lecture and
textbook material. I believe that had we re-taught this course, improved organization, presenter flow and
communication of course objectives would have improved student evaluations.
Graduate
BME 6938a – “Foundations of Neural Engineering – BME Repair Strategies”
(developed spring 2008/taught each Fall)
This course was designed to introduce neural-track BME graduate students to the brain and behavioral
neuroscience because many were repeating the advanced courses offered by the Neuroscience Department.
The presentation/discussion format lets modify the content difficulty to fit their diverse backgrounds. I employ
power point talks, chalk talks and movies to introduce basic concepts behind the topics we discuss. The
students’ advanced talks incorporated these topics with their engineering backgrounds and published literature
to propose BME strategies for CNS repair.
BME 6938b “Stem Cell Engineering”.
(developed fall 2008/taught each Spring)
Discussion-based Stem Cell Engineering overviews stem/progenitor cells (i.e. embryonic, adult, SCNT-derived
iPSCs), their history and politics, current funding priorities and regulatory policies, stem cell strategies,
preclinical and clinical data and patient-directed approaches. I employ power point slides, chalk talks and
published visual protocols (i.e. JOVE) and then the students then give talks that introduce a specific
stem/progenitor cell (i.e. hematopoietic) and then how to use them to treat a clinical problem (i.e. delivering
vaccine) using BME principles.
BME 8654 – “Problem Based Learning”
(taught fall 2008)
In one of the final 2 BME 8654 sections, I facilitated the independent learning of students tasked with
developing a potentially patentable biomedical device by promoting group discussion and research about
market analysis, patent searches, product design, prototyping and marketing by having them work as a
corporate team. The students cohesively researched, designed and prototyped a lightweight cast for setting
field injuries.
