Configuration and Operation
Configuration for all NK devices is via the Phoenix Control
Surface or a web browser. Each router level may be divided
into smaller partitions that may be assigned to a unique or
common switching level.
Operation is via any NK Series remote control panel,
the Phoenix Control Surface or NK-VCP virtual control
panel. Every key of each NK Series remote control panel
is configurable to enable panels to be customised for the
project or the operator.
Phoenix is a simple-to-use, highly visual GUI. With Phoenix,
the full capabilities of the NK system are available from your
PC, including configuration of all router levels and remote
control panels, monitoring and system control.
The NK-VCP virtual control panel enables users to remotely
control an entire NK system, making crosspoints as easy as
a mouse click!
The T-Bus Control System
The NK-IPS Network Bridge is connected to other NK Series
devices via the Codan Broadcast T-Bus control system,
a multi-drop RS-485 control system supporting collision
detection and half-duplex communication. The T-Bus control
system minimises cable connections between devices, acting
as both the communications line and a reliable means to
phantom power NK Series devices, such as the RCP-NK1, the
NK-SCP/A and the NK-GPI.
The T-Bus control system’s collision detection support ensures
that if two devices transmit messages at the same time they
will not send incorrect data to other devices on the line. All
components that utilise the T-Bus Control System are able
to monitor communication on the line to ensure that no
two devices are transmitting at the same time, maximising
reliability and minimising the risk of communication errors.
Router Flexibility
The NK Series of routers may be configured with multiple
partitions, effectively making two or more smaller routers from
the one frame. Partitioning enables a flexible routing solution
for applications where multiple switches must be activated
on the one level. Partitions configured on the analogue
video level enables users to configure single routers to switch
independent YUV or RGB signals simultaneously. For the
analogue and digital audio levels, users can partition routers
to switch simultaneously when using multiple language
streams.
Kondor 2
Large Scale Router Levels
Overview
Codan Broadcast’s NK Series of routers extend to sizes up to
256 x 256 through the use of Kondor 2 router levels.
The Kondor 2 provides a trusted and proven routing
switcher capability in its own right. Many hundreds of
Kondor 2 systems have been used worldwide in outside
broadcast vans, production, post-production and studio
environments, encompassing the most sophisticated and
demanding applications. The Kondor 2 is engineered with
no active components fixed inside the frame. The flexibility
of the Kondor 2 is the uniquely engineered architecture of
the 8-channel and 16-channel I/O cards and the innovative
free-form backplane.
The Kondor 2 offers users the ability to mix and match video,
SDI, HDTV (SD/HD multi-definition), audio and AES/EBU
signals —all in the same high-density rack frame.
A 5 RU frame houses 25 modules. Multiple frames may be
joined together for large configurations. Each frame slot can
house input or output cards, a matrix switching core or a
power supply, giving maximum flexibility to customers.
All devices in a Kondor 2 frame (I/O cards, matrix switching
cores and power supplies) are hot swappable without taking
the router off-line and without removing any signal cable.
In addition, users can move from SDI to HDTV eight inputs/
outputs at a time—all at nominal cost.
A 1 RU fan system with front removable fan tray is located on top or bottom depending
on cooling needs. The fan trays slide out for service and replacement while the system is
operational. Three high efficiency fans draw air in through the filtered front door, through
the power supplies, up through the cards, and exhaust via the back and sides. Other
cooling options are available for systems made up with multiple frames.
With the Kondor 2 router levels, the NK Series of routers now provides capacity from
the smallest applications through to the very large; all in a modular fashion. The full
capabilities of the NK Series systems are available when using Kondor 2 router levels,
including the Phoenix Control Surface, NK-IPS network bridge, NK-VRC virtual routing
core and NK-GPI interface. Naturally, all NK Series remote control panels may be used as
well as Geneos control panels via the NK-JBX interface.
Overview
The RCP-NKQ remote control panel offers 17 coloured
backlit graphic LCD keys with multiple menus, enabling users
to instantly navigate through the system with few key presses.
The press of a menu key in the main menu opens a submenu,
which refreshes the panel keys with new functions and
labels.
Assignment of navigation keys enables quick access to menus.
Custom key labels (up to 10 characters across 2 lines), icons
and colours can also be defined by the user for instant
recognition of any key function. The colours and functions
of the keys are set up using the Phoenix Control Surface,
then this configuration document is sent to the panel. This
eliminates unauthorised or accidental reprogramming.
The RCP-NKQ is ideal for use on Outside Broadcast vans
or in production houses where configurations change
regularly. It is equally as useful in studios where the unlimited
configurations enable fast and simple customised setups of
each panel.
RCP-NKM
Remote Control Panel
Overview
Each of the 40 keys of the RCP-NKM remote control panel
can be assigned from a range of switch functions in the
Phoenix Control Surface. The back-lit 16 x 2 LCD provides
a large source and destination status display. The fully
illuminated keys also have removable clear polycarbonate
caps to enable labelling. Backlighting enables the labels to
be viewed in low-lit control rooms making the panel perfect
for almost any application. The panel can be used with any
size router as XY, cutbus or multi-cutbus. The panel may also
control multiple router levels, either tied or as breakaways.
The flexibility of the RCP-NKM means that even after major
system changes, it can be fully reprogrammed without the
limitations of fixed function panels. Each panel can be
assigned to any portion of the router with an individual set of
labels and panel layout.
RCP-NK1 Remote Control Panel
Overview
The RCP-NK1 features 40 soft, fully programmable backlit
keys arranged in a 32 + 8 configuration for convenient
function key layout. The RCP-NK1 remote control panel can
be used with any size router as XY, cutbus or multi-cutbus.
The RCP-NK1 panel may also control multiple router levels,
either tied or as breakaways.
Connected via the T-Bus control system, the RCP-NK1 is
phantom-powered by the router to which it is connected.
Multiple control panels can be linked together and powered
from the one router.
One of the most useful and flexible features of the RCP-NK1
remote control panel is the ability to install the front key panel
locally to NK-16 routers. Localising RCP-NK1 remote control
panels ensures that rack space is maximised and cable
connections are minimised. Alternatively, installing panels
remotely means that panels do not necessarily have to be
installed in the immediate vicinity of the routers, and can be
connected and installed in other rooms if required.
NK-IPS Network Bridge
Overview
The NK-IPS network bridge is the external gateway to all
NK Series devices for configuration, firmware upgrades,
monitoring and remote control.
The full capabilities of the Phoenix Control Surface, a web
browser or the NK-VCP virtual control panel are available
from any computer when connected locally or through a
network to the NK-IPS network bridge.
The 8-port hub on the rear of the NK-IPS enables flexibility
of installation and isolating groups of devices. In the event
of a critical error, the 8 port hub and connection of devices
in a star layout means that individual device failure does not
affect the entire system.
Alarm status and monitoring is displayed on the NK-IPS On
line Devices web page enabling users to locate errors and
troubleshoot problems.
Applications
The NK-IPS network bridge is suited to environments where
systems and devices must periodically be reconfigured, for
remote control, or within environments where devices need
to be locked to prevent changes in configuration.
When coupled with the Phoenix Control Surface, a web
browser or the NK-VCP virtual control panel, users have
unparalleled versatility for device customisation, firmware
upgrades, alarm display and system operation. At the same
time, the NK-IPS can limit access through password control.
The alarm status, visible from the Phoenix Control Surface
or a web browser, shows warnings, and errors. Users can
select the device to display information and a brief alarm
description.
NK-VRC Virtual Routing Core
Overview
The NK-VRC offers a virtual routing solution to any NK routing
swicther system. The NK-VRC offers up to 2 000 virtual source
and destination assignments for the routing system, making
it ideal for environments where resources may be added in
the future.
Virtual routing enables grouping of several physical inputs
and outputs for a switch. The virtual routing capability of the
NK-VRC allows the creation of virtual I/O assignments for up
to 1 000 sources and 1 000 destinations.
Users can configure the NK-VRC so that the NK Series routing
switcher system knows which physical input socket to use for
each of the 32 levels and each virtual I/O assignment.
Physical inputs and outputs may be assigned to more than
one virtual label, resulting in a virtual routing table (physical
source/destination and level combinations) larger than the
actual system size.
NK-RP1
Redundant Power Supply
Overview
The NK-RP1 offers a reliable, fault tolerant and fail-safe option
for NK Series routers and peripheral devices. The NK-RP1
supplies redundant power to up to four routers and devices, to
a total power consumption of 100 watts. The NK-RP1 provides
GPI outputs to indicate alarms, in the event that one power
supply has failed. The heartbeat LED on the front of the unit
also blinks if one PSU has failed.
During normal operation, the design of the NK-RP1 enables
balancing of the power load, delivering high reliability to all
connected routers and devices. When configured as a dualredundant
positive and negative power supply, the NK-RP1
has greater than 80% efficiency as a negative power source,
providing both efficient and low-temperature operation.
The NK-RP1 comes standard as a positive power rail supply.
A negative power rail option may be installed as an upgrade
by simply removing the front panel and inserting the NK-RP1-
NEG option card (required for NK-A16/32 and NK-V16/32
router levels).
visual representation of the panel, allowing users to edit buttons easily
with the mouse.
When used with the off-line editing feature, custom modules enable
users to get a feel for devices before they are connected to the system.
In this distributed NK Series routing switcher system,
the Phoenix Control Surface in London can control
or configure equipment located in Sydney.
The NK Switchboard enables users to locally
or remotely control an entire NK Series routing
switcher system. If required, it is also possible
to control multiple systems, alternating between
each as needed. Each system may be configured
by the NK-IPS independently of other systems on
the network.
The NK Switchboard also allows users to protect
outputs as well as providing machine control
functionality. Each system may be configured
on-the-fly to display and control almost any
amount of inputs, outputs and levels.
Any protected outputs are displayed on the
NK Switchboard, including protects activated
from control panels or other Phoenix users.
The NK Switchboard
The NK Switchboard provides users with a simple interface
for crosspoint switching and router status display.
Advanced Features
The advanced features of the Phoenix Control Surface provide users with unique options for system
management and control. The USB key provides secure access for engineers and system integrators.
The save and restore function is especially useful for applications where devices need to be reconfigured
regularly and quickly. Off-line editing allows users to edit device configurations while the system itself is
on line or on air. Another significant feature of Phoenix is the ability to send one configuration to multiple
devices, making it perfect for redundant applications.
The File Explorer
The File Explorer provides users with quick and easy access
to saved device configurations and firmware files.
Save and Restore
The Phoenix Control Surface can save any number of system
configurations to disk, making the NK Series ideal for applications
such as OB vans where significant and rapid configuration
changes are required. Configurations may each be saved to a
separate folder and recalled when required.
Off-line Editing
The off-line editing feature of Phoenix makes it the ideal solution
when planning for growth of an NK Series routing switcher system.
Default device configurations may be accessed from the Phoenix
Installation CD and edited before the device has been physically
installed into the existing system.
Secure Access
The Phoenix USB key provides secure access for device configuration and system control. The USB key
may be removed when users leave their workstation, without having to exit the program itself. This ensures
that Phoenix can stay on line 24 hours a day if required, and the ability to change system configuration
can be restricted to selected engineers.
Upgrading Device Firmware
The Phoenix USB Key
Support for New NK Series Devices
Newly released and future products in the NK Series family can be edited straight away, but many new
devices will have a custom module for easier configuration. Simply download the custom module for the
newly purchased hardware module for an immediate start!
The Phoenix Control Surface allows easy uploading of firmware to devices. New firmware may be
downloaded from the Codan Broadcast website and displayed in the File Explorer in Phoenix.
Automatic Software Updates
Phoenix is composed of a series of independent modules, allowing each module to be updated without
the need to update the program core itself. If a specific device module does require a core update for
functionality, the dependency is resolved automatically when installing updates from the Update Centre.
The Update Centre may be used to update the Phoenix Control Surface core modules, library modules,
existing device modules as well as install new custom modules.
Updates may also be installed manually if the updates have been downloaded directly from the Codan
Broadcast website.
The Automatic Update Check can be enabled to search the Update Centre for module updates,
enhancements and additions, keeping Phoenix up-to-date when features are implemented.
