AYSO—It’s For The Kids!
EVERYONE PLAYS, OPEN REGISTRATION, BALANCED TEAMS,
POSITIVE COACHING, GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP
Region 779 Newsletter
In recent months, the national media has focused on the negative, even violent, behavior of players,
coaches and parents involved in youth sports. In a proactive effort to counteract this trend of violence,
AYSO is initiating a program called Kids Zone.
As part of our educational agenda, AYSO created Kids Zone, a dynamic program targeted to eliminate
negative sideline behavior. Kids Zone is aimed toward producing a thoroughly positive impact
on everyone involved in youth soccer, including players, coaches, referees and spectators. By following
these guidelines, you will be helping to create a positive environment on our sidelines:
• Kids are Number 1
• Fun – not winning – is everything
• Fans only cheer, and only coaches coach
• No yelling in anger
• Respect the volunteer referees
• No swearing
• No Smoking
• Leave no trash behind
• Set a proper example for our children
Please remember that each of our venues are considered Kids Zones. Thank you for your assistance
in making this season a memorable one for our children!

Unlike some of the other youth sporting
organizations, AYSO referees are volunteers.
Every week for ten weeks our region
hosts 70 games, not including U16 and U19
games. This requires 210 referees every
Saturday, all volunteers.
To help ensure that there are enough referees,
our region holds a post season tournament for
teams in the U10 through U14 divisions. This
tournament is scheduled for all the teams that
earn enough referee points. Each team is required
to achieve 19 points by week nine of
the 10 week season.

Two points are given for a center referee and
one point is given for an assistant referees per
game. A maximum of three points can be
earned by any team per Saturday for games
refereed between weeks one and seven. A
maximum of five points can be earned by any
team for weeks eight and nine.
You can sign up to referee games at the
weekly Referee Meetings (Wednesday nights
starting at 7:00pm at the Civic Center) or at
the Referee tent on Saturdays.

Referee Round-Up
The Rules of Soccer—Laws 1 through 4
As mentioned last week, this season’s newsletter
will focus on the 18 rules, or laws of
soccer. The first four laws are items that are
required to begin a soccer match. They are
as follows:
LAW 1—FIELD OF PLAY
Law 1 requires that a soccer field be rectangular
in shape, with the length of the touch
line being greater than the length of the goal
line. At a minimum, each field shall contain
the following:
- Goals placed on the center of each goal
line.
- Half-line: divides the field into two equal
parts.
- Center Circle: denotes the middle of the
field.
- Goal Areas: a rectangle at each end of the
field, beginning six yards from the inside of
each goal post, and extending six yards into
the field.
- Penalty Areas: a rectangle at each end of
the field, beginning 18 yards from inside of
each goal post, and extending 18 yards into
the field. A semi-circle with an arc radius
of 10 yards is placed on the top of the penalty
area.
- Penalty Mark: a spot 12 yards from the
center of each goal line.
Each field is also required to have a minimum
of four corner flags (one in each corner),
although placing flags at each end of
the half-line is desirable. Flag poles are to be
a minimum five-feet tall.
Lastly, Law 1 allows us to modify the overall
dimensions of our fields to fit the age groups
of our players.
LAW 2—THE BALL
According to Law 2, the size of the soccer ball
can vary depending on the age group of the
players. The ball must be spherical in shape
and made of leather or other suitable material.
It is the responsibility of the Referee to ensure
that the ball is properly inflated and is free
from any defects that could harm a player.
Should a ball become defective during a
match, play should be stopped and a replacement
ball is dropped at the spot where the
original ball became defective, thus restarting
the game.
LAW 3—NUMBER OF PLAYERS
This law requires that two teams, each consisting
of no more than 11 players and no
fewer than seven players (including the goalkeeper)
are required to participate during a
soccer match. Law 3 allows us to adjust the
number of participants depending on the age
group of the players. Player substitutions are
also discussed in Law 3, however this section
only applies to our U16 and U19 divisions.
Changing of goalkeepers during a match is
permitted under Law 3, but only during a stop-
page in a game. The Referee must be informed
and concur with the change before it
is allowed.
The Referee is charged with the duty of
ensuring that any player who is bleeding
immediately leave the field for treatment.
Once the bleeding has been properly dealt
with, the player may return to the field with
the permission of the Referee.
LAW 4—PLAYERS EQUIPMENT
Law 4 states that a player must not use
equipment or wear anything, which is dangerous
to himself or another player
(including any kind of jewelry). The law
further indicates that the basic compulsory
equipment for each player includes:
- Jersey
- Shorts
- Shin Guards that are made of a suitable
material and provide a reasonable degree of
protection.
- Socks that cover shin guards
- Shoes or cleats.
Each goalkeeper must wear colors that are
different from the other players, Referee or
Assistant Referees.

U5/U6/U8 Game Highlights
GIRLS U8
Shooting Stars- Congratulations we had a great first game. The
girls played hard and had lots of fun scoring goals. Our STARS this
week are Serena C and Noelle M. Good Job girls we are proud of
you.
Galaxy Girls: Everyone has been really hard at work during practice
and it really paid off for our season opener with goals by Jocelyn
B., Lauren & Taylor. With the assist from Miranda, Natalie, Alycen
& Jasmine. Our defense/offense was also out of this world.
The Cheetah’s were short on players but not short on heart! Way to
goal – Catherine and Erin! Super saves by Grace, Ashyton, Brooke
and Catherine! Great defense by Hannah and Lauren! Kaity and
Ejah really attacked that ball! Cheetah-rific!
Bubblelicious started off the season with such enthusiasm! Goals
were scored by Erin, Nikole, Page, and Alexis. There were great goal
saves by Kaitlynn, Lauren, and Erin. We saw lots of passing and
some great assists.
Diamonds in the Rough: Our girls really have shown like
“Diamonds” in their first game. Our goal scorers were Sydney, Alexandria,
Erin, Isabella and Tara. Of special note was the outstanding
play of all of our goalies, Rianna, Diana, Tara and Erin.

GIRL POWER had a great first game on
Saturday. All of the girls played well in all
of their positions. There was wonderful
teamwork and the team had fun. Way To
Go, Girl Power! Thanks for your hard
work! We are very proud of you!
GIRLS U6
Shark Attack: Emma turned the ball
around, took it down the field and scored a
goal. Great job Emma! Mallory scored the
first goal of the season! Way to go Mallory.
Mayloni did a great job turning the ball
around and keeping it away from the goal!
Great job team!
Super Ladybugs: What a way to start the
season! All girls were fired up to play. Ella,
Adriana, Madison, Alyssa, and Carmen were
hard chargin' and did a fantastic job! Paige,
Maya, Lexi, Kennedy and Kenzi had great
teamwork and did a super job for the team.
Harmeena scored and sent her cheering section
into a frenzy. Kaitlyn also thrilled all
with great passes. Quinn was fearless and
not afraid to mix it up. Miranda provided
many great kickoffs. Finally, Karina rushed
back for tough defense. Way to go CRUSH!
Shooting Star's first game. Powerful kicks
Alexis. Quick moves Mikayla and Madison.
Super goal protection Alexa. Nice goal
Delaney. Good defense Katie, Laura, and
Julia. Great Kicks Ryan. Sweet goal Cassandra
and Karli.
Great opening day for the Drama Queens!
We saw some awesome kicks from Grace
and Cori. Ravynn did great on offense and
goal keeper. Brianna and Cassidy played
aggressive and stayed on the ball. A fantastic
goal was scored by Karen. Terra and
Gillian were a great tag team playing defense.
The Golden Stars had a good first game.
Caylee, Amanda, Kaylee, and Alyssa made
goals. It was quite impressive to see Caylee
and Amanda taking the ball and dribbling it
down the field. All of the girls put forth a
lot of effort.
Green Mermaids: Congratulations Cathryn
and Jasmin for scoring your 1st goals! Great
team work Hannah and Cathryn for the assists
and Hannah with a great block. Charis
and Briana way to get in there and kick the
ball! Hailey, Kaitlyn and Sydney awesome
job scoring. Great Job Mermaids!
Great play and hustle by all the Blue Dol-
phins. Camille came out and scored 3 big
goals. Tough girl awards went to Kristen and
Chloe for taking balls to the face and staying
in there!!
Pink Panthers were on the prowl on Saturday!!
Meghan scored a phenomenal goal
while Julia played an excellent defender!
Way to go girls. Kayla, awesome job passing
the ball to Jadyn, who scored!! You guys
ROCK!
The Black Widows played a great first
match. We had wonderful performances
from all players in attendance. Goals were
scored by Haley, Sydney, Amanda, Nicole,
Carly. Several players made significant attempts
in scoring. Thank you for a great first
game.
GIRLS U5
Our Super Stars happily embarked on their
soccer careers on Saturday. The first goals
on each field were scored by speedy Ally and
dynamo Alexis. All the girls played awesome,
showing great team spirit. The team's
dribbling and kicks reflect the time & attention
that Coaches Kathleen and Robert have
given the girls.
BOYS U8
Red Fire Dragons: Way to have fun! Great
goal keeping by Mukunth, Christian, Elon
and Carson. Awesome defense by Derek,
Dmitry, Dylan and Trey. Good passes from
Robert and Ricky. And nice goals by Dominique,
Austin and Spencer. Keep up the fantastic
effort. Coach Ozzie and John
The HAWKS gave their fans a great
show. Outstanding goal tending by Brennen
and Gavin. Zack and Joshua really showed
off their talents. Great work by our defenders
Jadon, Adam and Andrew. Austin was moving
the ball and well. Andres made a great
assist. Jacob played an excellent game.
Great job HAWKS
The HEAT had full team effort on their first
game. Props go out to all team members
which consist of Ryan, Matthew, Derek,
Diego, Kobe, Alexander, Dane, Michael,
Nicholas M, Cameron R, Nicholas R, Nicholas
S, Cameron T, and Boris for really turning
it on with all the good offense and defense.
The Grey Hawks swooped into their first
game with awesome force and skill. Fantastic
offense by Blake, Oliver, Cole, Mitchell,
Ryan and Caleb. Great passing and defense
from Jacob, Patrick, Chris, Jason, Matt and
Cole A. We Are SOOOOOO PROUD OF
YOU!!!!!!!!
The Flaming Skulls kept the spectators on
the edge of their seats. The boys pressured
the ball with their strong offense and showed
their enthusiasm for the game. The boys
showed not only excellent skills, but most
importantly, good sportsmanship. Good job
Flaming Skulls!
The Cobras got off to a Kickin' start last
week! Max and Charley showed off some
awesome ball handling skills! Lewis and
Robert played very strong on defense! Nothing
got past Adrian and Michael R. in the
goal! A big Cobra thumbs up to Michael L.
for scoring! What a great way to start off the
season!
The Strikers had an exciting first game.
Ajay, Derrick, Gabriel, Grayson, Jake, Jasen
and Jeffrey all scored goals. Excellent goal
keeping by Joshua, Neil, Brian and Joel.
Super defense by Dylan, Nicholas, Felix and
the entire Striker team. GO STRIKERS!!!!
WOW! Great season opener Knights!
Awesome performances by our goalies -
Seamus, Evan, Josh, Justin, Eric, and Matthew!
All of the Knights were passing the
ball really well! Great teamwork!! Nicholas,
you're a great addition to our team! We
missed you Ethan!
KING COBRAS looked liked royalty their
first game out. Joshua, Junior and Ryan all
scored goals! Plus there was superb footwork
by Andrew and Jorge, great throw in
by Nicholas and power kicks by Zachary.
Great job King Cobras - You were awesome!
After some serious practices under Coach
Walter and Coach Scott, the BULL DOGS
finally had our very first game of the season.
Tough games!!! The BULL DOG worked
very hard as teams. Thank you BULL
DOGS families and friends for cheering for
us!
Way to go Silver Sharks!! You boys
played an awesome game. Ricky W. did an
outstanding job scoring. And Parker also
did terrific helping his team score. Both of
these boys won the Star Player of the game.
Richard did a fantastic job at defense, and
Brad did not let one ball pass him.
BOYS U5
Congratulations Alligators for an awesome
first game!!! Joshua, Blake, Maverrick,
Matthew, Alex, Collin, Rohin, Aaron, and
Jacob all did their best, and had a great
time.
