Putting The Team Back In Teamwork
It has been 24 years since my
sister was married, but I still remember
an incident between her,
my mother, and a neighbor as
though it were this morning. They
were involved in one of many
heated discussions regarding wedding
details when the neighbor
said to my sister "You must recall,
Catherine, that this is not
your wedding, but your mother's.
You are only the bride." While
her humor calmed the moment,
there was too much truth in that
statement. All too many mothers
view their daughters' wedding
exactly that way.
Unfortunately, all too many parents
and coaches hold the same
view toward youth soccer. The
boys and girls on the field are
only the players; it is the parents
and coaches who are the competitors.
And it is the children that
pay the price. I am proud to say
that my U-11 house league girls'
team in Northern Virginia's
Springfield Youth Club finished
our fall season with a 1-3-4 record.
Those of you who are competitive
in nature are no doubt
surprised by that statement, but
there are several reasons for it.
First, in eight games, they gave up
only 12 goals. We only "lost" one
game. That team, appropriately
named the Orange Crush, completely
outplayed us with the maturity
and discipline of a high
school varsity team, beating us 5-
0. However, our two goalies in
that game made some incredible
saves among the 14 shots
that they did stop. In every
other game they thoroughly
outplayed their opponents --
we just didn't outscore them.
My team came off the field
knowing they had done their
best. They kept the ball on
the attack; at least threefourths
of those seven games
was played in front of our
opponent's goal. Virtually
every goal our opponents
scored came within two minutes
of a mid-half substitution
on defense.
Because I start each game
with pre-planned substitutions
for each half, my girls
know when they will be
coming out of the game.
They know that I do not pull
players because of bad play--
only because of bad attitudes.
I am proud of that record
because at no point during
the season did I put or keep a
player on the bench for the
sake of scoring a goal. When
one observer commented that
benching my own daughter
prior to a kickoff seemed an
odd way to reward her for
scoring a goal, she turned to
him and said "I had to come
out, it was Courtney's turn to
play."
Second, I had several girls
that told me they only liked
one particular position. They
didn't want to play anywhere
else. I always told them that
1
2
Quote of the Day
they were very good in that
position, but to understand
the game, they needed to
play every field position.
That meant that sometimes
we had a player whose fitness,
knowledge, skills and
abilities did not match the
position she was playing. But
by the end of the season they
all better understood why
players in another position
did things the way they did. I
could have won more games
by going with a set lineup
every week, but I am proud
of the fact that these girls
came away with greater
knowledge and a much
clearer understanding of the
game than with a winning
record.
Third, I am proud of the fact
that as they came off the field
every week, they would always
compliment two or
three others for something
they had done well in the
match. The only time I saw
them upset after a match was
when the other team had spat
on their hands before shaking.
They weren't bothered
by the loosing, only by the
poor sportsmanship. And
even then, rather than retaliate,
one of the girls said
"Next time we play them,
remember to bring paper
towels. They're poor sports."
ran out of time.”
Referee Round-Up
Law 16—Goal Kicks and Law 17—Corner Kicks
Goal Kick…Corner Kick…What’s the difference?
Plenty, depending on what side of the
ball you are on. Corner kicks present the
attacking team with a tremendous opportunity
to score, while goal kicks often save the defending
team from pending doom.
LAW 16 – The Goal Kick
A goal kick is the way that play is restarted
when the ball, having last touched a player of
the attacking team, passes over the goal line
and a goal is not scored. The kick is taken by
the defending team at any point within their
own goal area (6 yard box).
The ball may be kicked by any player from
the defending team from any point within the
goal area. At higher levels, most teams allow
the keeper to take the kick although this might
be a dangerous approach for the younger
levels.
The ball is not in play until it leaves the penalty
area (18 yard box). This means that once
the ball is kicked, no player of either team
may play it until it leaves the penalty area. If
someone does play it in the area, the kick is
simply retaken as the ball was never in play.
Note that if one team continually plays the
ball before it leaves the area, the referee
might rule that this is wasting time and penalize
accordingly. If the ball stops rolling or
rolls back over the end line before it makes it
outside of the penalty area, it is re-kicked.
The opponents must remain outside of the penalty
area until the ball is in play. That is, the
attackers are not only prohibited from playing
the ball while it is in the area but are actually
prohibited from entering the area at all. On the
other hand, defenders can take up any position
that they want either inside or outside of the
area.
The kicker must not play the ball a second time
until it is touched by another player. This is
similar to the ruling on all restarts except a drop
ball. The kicker can not play the ball again until
it has a) cleared the area and b) touched another
player of either team. If the second touch takes
place in the area, the ball is kicked again. If it
takes place outside the area, it's an indirect free
kick to the opponents at the point of the second
touch.
A goal may be scored directly from a goal kick
but only against the opposing team. This means
that if the ball is kicked high into the hurricane
force wind which blows it back into the kicker's
goal before it gets beyond the penalty area, it is
re-kicked. If by any chance the ball does leave
the penalty before being blown back into the
goal, the correct restart will be a corner kick, as
you may not score on your own goal directly
from a goal kick.
LAW 17 – The Corner Kick
A corner kick is essentially a direct free kick
taken by the attacking team from the corner of
the field in the attacking end. A corner kick is
awarded when the whole of the ball, having
last touched a player of the defending team,
passes over the goal line, either on the
ground or in the air, and a goal is not
scored.
When taking a corner kick, the ball is
placed anywhere inside the corner arc at
the nearest corner flag post. It is important
to note that the corner flag post must not be
moved.
Corner kicks are very similar to direct free
kicks, as a goal may be scored directly
from a corner kick without touching another
player first. Referees must also be
conscious of the following:
• Opponents are to remain at least 10
yards from the ball until it is in play.
• The ball is kicked by a player of the
attacking team.
• The ball is in play when it is kicked
and moves.
• The kicker can not play the ball a
second time until it has touched another
player.
The only "special" feature in the law is that
a player receiving a corner kick cannot be
offside, but considering where the ball is
placed, offside would be unlikely anyway.
Children May Be Children, But Parents and Coaches Should Behave Like Adults
By Vincent Fortanasce, M.D.
I realized that the problems with soccer were no different from those
I’d encountered in Little League. The most surprising thing about
kids’ sports is that the parents can be reduced to barbarianism much
more easily than their children. Players and parents who arrive with
open hearts and smiling faces, eager to learn and have fun together,
can be soured by adults who’ve forgotten the true meaning of soccer
or any children’s sport.
The goals of youth soccer are simple and fourfold: for the kids to
have fun, to be safe, to build character, and, most important, to learn
sportsmanship and fair play. At my son’s game, the adults, the
guardians of those principles, had failed the children. What struck
me even more than the adults’ immaturity was that it took only one
man to initiate the conflict, which was fueled by the other adults,
myself included. I’d cheered and jumped for joy after each goal. I
urged our boys to score more and I certainly didn’t go to Hank and
say, “Hey, this is unfair.” I reveled in the other team’s defeat. I felt
stronger and superior because my team – my son’s team – was
mauling another bunch of five- and six-year olds. Sad, I thought, is
not the word. Tragic was more like it.
And why do we adults allow this behavior to continue? The reason
is simple. We have forgotten what is important. We all want our
children to be made of the “right stuff,” to be confident, happy. But
the right stuff is not created overnight. We forget that scores are
meaningless to a child. What builds the right stuff is not winning,
not being the best, but trying one’s best. Never giving up. That’s
the message we should be instilling in throughout their lives. But to
do this correctly we must be as concerned for another parent’s child
as for our own – even if that child is on the opposing team. Empathy
and the ability to have compassion and protect all the children,
not just your own, is the life lesson that will help out children most.
Putting The Team Back In Teamwork
(Continued from page 1)
I am proud of a team that brings that kind
of attitude to the field, all the more so because
of that record.
Fourth, I am proud of that record because
we focused on building everyone's individual
skills as the foundation for team skills.
When I got the registration forms, I was
told my team had a total of 36 seasons of
experience. The organizers, while able to
add, weren't very good at statistics. Yes, I
had 36 seasons of experience on the team,
but seven of my players had only one or
by Grace, Cassidy, Terra, Krystal and great
offensive plays by Caylee, Rayvnn and
Courtney. Congratulations to all the girls!
Diamonds in the Rough: Despite stiff competition,
our Diamonds did not give up. Sarah
G., Katlyn and Rianna each scored goals. Our
goalies, Diana, Sydney, Tara and Paige all
performed well. Great effort Diamonds!
Cheetahs Girls : The girls were Cheetahrrific
this week! The offense was on fire, with
Erin, Ejah, Meghan and Sierra all scoring
goals! Ashtyn was awesome in goal. Lauren
and Brooke gave great efforts. Catherine had
powerful blocks! Everyone played hard!
Great Job Yellow Cheetah Girls !! You guys
have done a fantastic job this year! You all
have improved so very much! As your parents
and family it has been a wonderful privilege
to watch you all sharpen your skills and
have a great time playing together! Yellow
Cheetah Girls Rock!!
GIRLS U6
Miranda once again was a force, making
fierce attacks and rushing back for goalsaving
blocks. Natalie helped out on the offensive
end and Raegan assisted on defense.
Quinn and Karina overcame queasy stomachs
and had solid kicks. Way to go CRUSH!
Saturday was a fun game. Toni did a great
job of turning the ball and taking it down the
field. Emma did a great job on defense and
saved a goal! Mayloni and Sissy both
scored. Great job Shark Attack!
two seasons of experience, and one--
Ashley--had never played soccer before at
all. Because of the Northwest Airlines
strike, she wasn't even able to join the team
until the week of our first game. But by the
end of the season, four of the five girls that
I nominated to the All-Stars team were
girls in only their first or second season--
excited sponges -that-are-dying-to-soak-upeverything-ready-to-learn
rookies --and one
of them was Ashley.
During their All-Star match, Ashley and
my daughter led four players in a jail break
on the goal. As the other players tried to
catch up, they screened our view from the
GIRLS U5
Our Super Stars were sure sparkling on
Saturday - great game girls!! Alexis C.,
Cameron and Lauren all did a fantastic job
hustling on the field and getting in some
great kicks!!! Keep it up everyone...we're
on the home stretch!!
BOYS U8
KING COBRAS know why it is good to
be king. Once again, they were awesome!
Junior, Andrew O., Andrew L. and
Joshua were sharp on offense, scoring
goals for the team. Our defense, with
goalies Max, Tyler and Salvador, played
fiercely with assistance from Nicholas.
Ryan and Zachary were great defenders
and both nearly scored. Nice work, guys!
Congratulations to CHRISTIAN &
JUSTIN, the Players of the Game! Also
an outstanding goalie job for Connor, the
great wall for the Bulldogs! Thanks to the
inspiring coaching of Walter and Scott,
the team loves to play soccer! Go Bulldogs
go!!!
The Flaming Skulls are out to prove that
they are unstoppable! The pressure the
offense displayed was fierce. The defense
is just as tough, a mack truck can't get
through to that goal! Good team work,
we're all so proud!
sideline and it was hard to see what was
happening. I saw at least three, and perhaps
all four, take a shot on goal. I
thought it was Ashley who scored, but
wasn't sure.
Why am I proud of that 1-3-4 record?
Because as they were walking back for the
ensuing kickoff, I asked her who scored.
Both of my players turned toward me and
shouted across the field in response: "We
all did!" Win or lose, they had learned to
be a team. I am one coach who would
choose a losing team over winning individuals
any day. Those lessons will stay
with the players for a lifetime.
