SPORTSMANSHIP
Winning Isn't Everything!
By Cindy Grigg
Sports provide a positive learning experience
that will increase your ability to develop
self confidence, good sportsmanship,
and teamwork skills. Sports help you value
personal health and fitness. Playing a sport
when you're young will help you keep a
healthy weight and healthy exercise habits
for life. Sports also teach you to work hard
and have a little fun at the same time.
In sports, you are challenged both mentally
and physically. Coaches teach the rules of
the game, strategy to win, and how to work
together. You will also build skills,
endurance, and strength. Perhaps the greatest
life lessons are learned in sports. Winning
does not come easy. You’ve got to work for it.
"Winners never quit, and quitters never win."
Sometimes you give it your all and you still
lose. When you lose, pick yourself up and try
again.
As an AYSO Kids Zone Advocate, we
promise to:
• Honor the Game
• Respect all participants,
encouraging good sportsmanship and
keeping the game of Soccer FUN
By entering an AYSO Kids Zone, you agree
to the following:
• Kids are #1
• Fun - not winning - is everything!
• Fans only cheer, and only Coaches coach
• Respect the Volunteer Referee
• No Swearing
• No Smoking
• Leave no trash behind
• Set a proper example for our children.
Laws of the Game The “Offsides” rule explained
The offsides rule is one of the most misunderstood rules in soccer. Here's how it goes: If you receive the ball and
you're on the opposite team's half of the field then there has to be at least 2 defenders either next to you or ahead of
you, usually, the goalkeeper counts for one of them unless he/she has pushed up beyond two other defenders. It's that
simple; you can't be further towards the goal, by yourself, without a defender next to you when you receive the ball.
You are allowed to be in the offsides position as long as you do not receive the ball or impede a defender from the
play either physically or visually. You may dribble past the defenders without passing the ball. These are the four
conditions that must be met for a player to correctly be called offsides.
Number 1: The player has to be on the attacking half of the field. There's no offsides if a player gets the ball on his
team's half of the field.
Number 2: The player has to be involved in the play. If there's a player that is ahead of the defenders he'll only be in
an offside position if somebody passes him the ball. If he doesn't intervene in the play then there is no offside.
• Everyone Plays
• Open Registration
• Balanced Teams
• Positive Coaching
• Good Sportsmanship
Number 3: The position of the offside player is determined when the ball is kicked, not when he receives the ball. If
the player is behind an opponent when the ball is kicked and then runs past the opponent to receive it, he should not
be called offsides.
Number 4: There are no offsides on corner kicks, throw-ins, or goal kicks.
If indeed you are called offsides then the penalty will be a free kick for the other team.

Once again, calling all volunteers…
AYSO IS AN ALL VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION!!
MANY THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO HAVE COME TO HELP!!! You have
made it possible for the kids to play soccer. For those of you who haven’t
yet had a chance to help out, please consider the different ways in which
you can contribute to our region. Help is needed painting fields (usually
on Friday afternoons), setting up and tearing down the fields, working in
the ref tents at each venue and of course refereeing. For the safety of
our kids, games will be cancelled if we don’t have enough volunteers to
referee them. Please help out, so our kids can play!!
Foot Skills & Drills plus Goalie Clinics on Friday Nights
Clinics will be conducted by The UK Soccer Coaches and Chino Hills AYSO. There will be a one time
cost of $6.00 to cover the cost of the Training Shirt to be worn for all Training Sessions. This will
provide a good opportunity for our players as well as our coaches
to participate & learn new drills.
We will have two sessions:
6:00 - 7:00 Will be For U8 - U10 Chino Hills AYSO Players.
Where Grand Avenue Park. North Field.
Well Said, by one of our parents…
I write this letter to not only to the parents on my soccer teams but to my friends that have children in
our region.
We have 14 players on our team, generally that means 28 parents not to mention siblings of age that
our players may have, yes these high school kids of age are able to get certified and ref as well. It is
great experience for them, some of them need community service hours for school, church, etc. what a
great way to earn them. Perhaps aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, grandparents, friends, etc. would like
to get involved. I ask that each and everyone of you consider helping out our region, with a region as
large as Chino Hills we should have a mass of parents wanting to volunteer.
If your child/children have been playing soccer for a few years I believe that if you take a look around
you will see the same parents/volunteers season after season. I realize we are all busy, schedules are
crazy, running from one location to another, I myself have 3 playing AYSO and never at the same
venue but we make it work.
Please consider helping our referee's out with over 3,000+ kids playing in our region there is no reason
that our region is struggling to obtain refs.
Visit the AYSO website at www.AYSO779.com for more information or you may email
dwiles@ayso779.com for more information. I know my children would be very
disappointed if one of their games got cancelled because of no refs I think yours
would be too.
Tools for Parents
The following ideas may be helpful for being a supportive AYSO parent.
Conversations before the games
• Tell your child you love him/her regardless of the outcome.
• Tell him or her “Go for it, give it your best shot and have fun!”
During the game
Understand that kids are over-stimulated during games. The coach may be giving instructions, opponents
and teammates are talking, the crowd is cheering, and the referee is blowing the whistle. To a youth sports
participant, the atmosphere is much like that of a fighter pilot with enemy jets racing all around. Do not yell
instructions to your child during the game because it only adds to the confusion. Sometimes the best thing
you can do as a parent is to be quiet. Cheer and acknowledge good plays by both teams.
After the game
• Thank the officials for doing a difficult job.
• Thank the coaches for their efforts. After a difficult loss, recognize that it is not a
good time to question a coach.
• Thank your opponents for a good game.
• Congratulate your child and his or her teammates for their efforts.
• Compliment individual players on good plays they made in the game.
During the car ride home
• Point out a good play your child made during the game.
• Avoid criticizing or correcting mistakes.
• Ask open-ended questions about how the game was played rather than how many
points were scored. Here are examples of open-ended questions that might apply:
• Did you have fun?
• Did you give it your best effort?
• What did you learn from the game?
• What was the best play you made and how did it feel?
• Did you bounce back from your mistakes?
AYSO recognizes the efforts and advancements made by the Positive Coaching Alliance in Honor of the
Game. The Kids Zone Parent Pledge is adapted from Positive Coaching Alliance's Parent Pledge
The BLUE DRAGONS delivered an
outstanding performance despite the
torrential rain. Teammates Duke, Nicolas,
Brandon M.'s team spirit, kept the game
close. Great game Blue Dragons!!!
Even in the pouring rain HOT TAMALES
were on fire! ELISE, MADISON &
YESENIA had some fancy dribbling
despite the slippery field. NATALIE &
ALLYSSANDRA played some awesome
defense and CLAIRE, SKYLER & CARLY
had great throw-ins. LAURYN & TORI
played quick offense and brought the ball
to SYDNEY who took it to the net and
scored!! The weather couldn't keep the
fans from cheering either, thank you to all
the parents who stuck it out.
TRANSFORMERS said goodbye to
summer with an early morning pregame
