PRESIDENT’S LETTER
The CHEST Foundation is
the philanthropic family of
CHEST, and our mission is
to support CHEST research,
prevention, and education
programs and provide
resources in pulmonary,
critical care, and sleep
medicine.
2015 brings the launch
of our “I’m in the Family”
campaign. As we build upon
our culture of caring, we are
excited to highlight those who inspire you. We hope you
will participate in this fun and heartfelt campaign.
Most importantly, in keeping with our theme of spotlighting
our donors, we highlight D. Robert McCaffree, MD,
Master FCCP, Eveline Faure, MD, and Allen I. Goldberg,
MD, Master FCCP. Bob is one of four individuals to serve
as President of both the college (CHEST) and the CHEST
Foundation. His knowledge and passion for chest medicine
is second to none, and we are grateful that he is such a
staunch supporter of the foundation as we bridge the past,
present, and future. Allen and his wife Eveline have a long
history of service to CHEST and are steadfast supporters of
the Margaret Pfrommer Memorial Lecture.
As your foundation President, I have thoroughly enjoyed
serving our CHEST Foundation family. It is because of each
and every one of you that we are lucky to have a foundation
to call home. Thank you all for your time, effort, and
generosity!
CULTURE OF CARING –
“There were times when myself and others were
having a bad day, we would just call CHEST
knowing our staff always supported us.”
D. Robert McCaffree, MD, Master FCCP, is one of only four
individuals to serve as President of both CHEST (1997-1998)
and the CHEST Foundation (2004-2006). This distinction only
begins to scratch the surface of what Dr. McCaffree means to
CHEST, the CHEST Foundation, its members, and the public.
Dr. McCaffree first became involved with CHEST through
committee work and some urging by the late Robert (Bob)
M. Rogers, MD, Master FCCP.
Beyond being a key participant in numerous committees,
and chairing eight, Dr. McCaffree is a vocal leader for the
CHEST Foundation. “Bart Chernow advocated for a
more philanthropic foundation. His idea was brought
to reality with the leadership of Al Lever, Ed Rosenow
(Master FCCP), and Marilyn Lederer. I am truly blessed
for having the opportunity to continue the great work
they started.”
As the CHEST Foundation gains a new and stronger identity
within CHEST, the connections from the past to the present
will not be forgotten. Past leadership and decisions of others
help steer this foundation and its mission in a direction that
everyone can be proud to support. “When the foundation
was initiated, the first challenge was to determine the
“Everyone has been supportive and caring.
The CHEST Foundation is a fundamental and
critical connection to the community. It feels
like a ‘family’. ”
programmatic focus. The programs now under the
foundation are crucial to the work of CHEST and the
CHEST Foundation. The emphasis on research, service,
and tobacco are very important to our members, and
the foundation continues to expand upon its short but
storied past.”
Of all the activities that have been advanced with the
help of Dr. McCaffree, it’s the work of the foundation’s
Community Service Grants that has remained near and
dear to his heart. “Community service grants were the
main topic and highlight of the foundation dinner.
Being able to emphasize the great works of the
community through the CHEST Foundation grants
has been transformational.”
CHEST and the CHEST Foundation enhance the lives
of their members and the patients they serve. Dr. McCaffree’s
impact cannot and should not be quantified in his years
of service but qualified through the lives he has touched.
Dr. McCaffree’s legacy is best explained in his own words:
“The CHEST Foundation’s culture of caring is how it
differentiates itself from peers. It has made an indelible
impact on me and my career. I hope to leave behind a
place others can call home. A place that will be there
now and for the years to come.”
Thank you, Dr. McCaffree, for being a longtime donor and
passionate supporter of the CHEST Foundation.
THE CHEST FOUNDATION
PARTNERS WITH THE
GREEN BAY PACKERS
The CHEST Foundation partnered with the Green Bay Packers to
produce two public service announcements (PSAs). The PSAs were
shown at Lambeau Field during five Green Bay Packers’ home games!
Because of the hard work and effort by our member volunteers, the
CHEST Foundation was able to promote, in English and Spanish, the
importance of understanding COPD. The reach created by the two
PSAs was huge, as almost a half-million people had the opportunity
to gain critical knowledge about COPD.
Any member who would like to obtain a copy of the PSAs, please
contact the foundation at chestfoundation@chestnet.org.
Thank you for all you do and for being
part of the CHEST Foundation Family.
I have enjoyed the amazing privilege of living and working
in the beautiful mountain town of Hendersonville, NC, since
1991. My practice of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep
medicine has allowed me the honor of meeting a variety
of interesting patients with challenging problems. I could
not be surrounded by better office and hospital staff and
collegial professionals.
This picture celebrates the ICU family with whom I work
(and spend more time than with my husband and daughter,
it seems!). The ICU nurses were honored with the Team
DAISY Award on January 29. Our eight-bed ICU has 16
RNs, among whom there are more than 300 years of
collective experience. Their expertise, professionalism, and
camaraderie inspire me to pursue excellence.
Ten years ago, our Pardee Hospital ICU was awarded one
of the CHEST Foundation’s grants through their Critical
Care Family Assistance Program. Through the generosity of
the CHEST Foundation, we have been able to expand and
continue our efforts to support and to care for the families
of our ICU patients. We are able to provide lodging and
meal vouchers for families in need; we have orchestrated
a wedding in the ICU so that a dying mother could see her
son “married off” before she passed. We create memorial
keepsakes for families of dying patients; this included
making a “mommy” handprint caressing her 5-year-old
daughter’s handprint so that the little girl would always have
her dying mom holding her hand. The staff recently bought
a bicycle and helmet for a husband so that he didn’t have to
walk to work and to the hospital when visiting his ailing wife.
The staff also cares for their own, by covering extra shifts
when “life happens” to them or their loved ones. These are
just a few examples of our ICU “family” at work.
I am grateful for my professional “family” and for the efforts
of CHEST and the CHEST Foundation to promote health and
well being worldwide.
“People with disabilities cross every race, social
class, and intellectual level. I hope that someday
the public will realize that we are citizens of this
country, too; that we are entitled to the same
rights, services, and opportunities as the next
person; that, as individuals, we should be
utilized, not patronized.”
– Margaret Pfrommer
UNDERSTANDING THE
PATIENT’S PERSPECTIVE
The quote above best describes Margaret Pfrommer’s
position and passion for bettering the lives of others who
are polio survivors and mechanical ventilator users. Ms.
Pfrommer dedicated her life to creating opportunities for
people with disabilities. She pushed for stronger advocacy
and reached out to medical communities, including CHEST
and the CHEST Foundation. Allen I. Goldberg, MD, MBA,
Master FCCP, and his
wife, Eveline A. M. Faure,
MD, had the pleasure
of meeting Margaret in
1981 while she was in
a rehab clinic, and their
lives have not been the
same since.
In 1981, Margaret joined Drs. Goldberg and Faure, and
others, in organizing an international conference to help
people understand the historic experience of poliomyelitis
and how it impacted critical care (the first ICUs were polio
centers) and long-term mechanical ventilation at home.
The meeting, What Ever Happened to the Polio Patient?, had
published proceedings, including the keynote address
of C. Everett Koop, MD, former US Surgeon General, and
Margaret’s own presentation that provided “the patient’s
perspective.”
“Margaret’s first lecture during an acute medicine
meeting, regarding mechanical ventilation and the
patients’ perspective, has served as a beacon for us
and others.”
– Drs. Allen Goldberg and Eveline Faure
Margaret died in 1998. Although she was no longer
personally present to carry her passionate message, Allen
and Eveline picked up the torch. Less than a year following
Margaret’s death, Allen and Eveline helped create the
Margaret Pfrommer Memorial Lecture in Long-term Mechanical
Ventilation. This lectureship serves as just one of the ways
Margaret’s words and influence live on in pulmonologists
and other mechanical ventilation specialists and the patients
they serve. Today, more than a decade after the lectureship
originated, CHEST, the CHEST Foundation, Post-Polio Health
international, and Drs. Goldberg and Faure strive to find
more ways that the knowledge and understanding of
mechanical ventilation and polio survivors can be advanced.
“She is one of the most remarkable human beings I’ve
ever met. She had a desire to serve others beyond any
person I’ve ever met. Our hope and intent is not just
to promote use of medical technology at home. It is to
promote humanitarianism, the caring, in medicine.”
– Allen I. Goldberg, MD, MBA, Master FCCP
